MAY  23  2014
23   IYYAR - 5774

From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

5 sure signs that you are at Yavneh Academy during the final week of May:

1.    Seniors who recently returned from March of the Living have reengaged their academic engines and are taking late AP exams in Calculus, Chemistry and English Literature.

2.  During Student Council elections for next year, 9th graders are referring to themselves as "sophomores," 10th graders as "juniors," and 11th graders as "seniors."

3.   Nearly 50 students are preparing for a terrific end-of-term Shabbaton - taking time to bond and celebrate our Jewish community, all in the midst of their final exams.

4.   Senior parents, siblings and friends have begun the Graduation festivities with a lovely dinner honoring our newest crop of soon-to-be-Yavneh Alumni.

5.   We head into the Memorial Day long weekend with reverence and gratitude to all the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces - and continue to serve - to protect our great country.

Shabbat Shalom from all of us!

Dr. P.

Michael Teplitskiy ~ Class of 2014

"Yavneh is:  "Home.  Friendly.  Community
."

One plus one equals two, but one Michael Teplitskiy plus any one mathematics problem equals success, because there are few he won't master - and for those few --- it won't be long.

"I would say that I don't really have a favorite aspect, about mathematics, I like everything about it. The only reason the subject is so difficult for many is that people put themselves in the mindset that they can't do it, because that's just the easiest thing to do," said Michael.  "I used to be the worst student in my math class when I was in the eighth-grade, probably farworse than any of you out there think you are right now, but I made a conscious effort to change and do better in high school. Having good teachers helps a lot, and 'good' is specific to the individual, so when learning something, don't just consult one source, but rather find several different people's explanations and I guarantee one of them will make sense."

"Through his unmatched work ethic, incomparable raw talent, and his unbounded intellectual curiosity, Michael has demonstrated that he possesses all necessary skills to be successful at the college level and beyond," said Chris Northrup, a former Mathematics teacher at Yavneh.  "Michael has essentially taught himself single variable Calculus using online resources, and there were times when I had nothing to contribute in our discussions because his inquiry pertained to something I hadn't come across yet even though I was in my last year of a Masters program in Mathematics.  Michael holds the belief that all mathematicians have which is that the best part of any problem isn't in the solution itself, but in the creation and design of the solution."

Very methodical in his learning, and in life, making sense of his future is something Michael has on target.  In the fall, he'll attend the University of Texas in Dallas, where he hopes to have a position tutoring other math students, forging a path to his future. "Yavneh has best prepared me for college by helping to give me the confidence I need to believe that I can do whatever I want to," he said.  "I've also gained a lot from my English and math classes, since those used to be subjects that I was not very good in, but in which I have improved.  I'm looking forward as a university student to having the ability to study what I choose and what is interesting to me."

"Michael is a wonderful student for one-on-one conversations, his interest in mathematics and its worldly applications interested even this English teacher," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins.  "I thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor when writing about obscure math-related laws as a target for his satire. He certainly finds what's interesting in areas less-aware people would miss."

A Dallas-native and a graduate of Akiba Academy, Michael is the son of Dmitriy, a long-beloved member of Yavneh's Maintenance Crew, and Larisa, and he's the younger brother of Shlomo.

"I've been learning about the State of Israel for so long but had never seen it in person, and the March of the Living made it more present and real to me," said Michael, just one of Yavneh's many seniors who recently returned from the 2014 March of the Living, many of whom will share their experiences on Tuesday night at 7pm in Pollman Hall.  "The March of the Living is an important program to participate in because our generation is likely the last to hear survivors speak in person.

To hear their stories directly, and to see the land of Israel, which was built up from nothing

after the destruction during the Holocaust, is something I'll never forget."

"In my years of teaching, and my experience in the corporate world, I can attest that colleges need more students like Michael," said Mr. Northrup, "that businesses need more employees like Michael, and in a world with increasingly complex problems, we need individuals with the ingenuity, and intelligence, to tackle them.  Michael, is one such individual."

Michael, as you leave Yavneh and the SRCampus to tackle the problems of the outside, we will always be blessed that you had your start here - and we'll be proud wherever you go.

Yavneh in Review

Science Fair 2014

Yavneh's students proved many theories thru the 2014 Science Fair, primarily that if our students are given a task, they'll rise to the occasion.  Congratulations to all of our Physics and Chemistry students and Kol Hakavod to those teams who placed in the top three in each category:

       The Strength of Hydrogen Gas

Each student in Yavneh's Physics and Chemistry program was required to participate, an average of the judges' scores, assigned as a test grade to each.  Projects were based on class lectures from the beginning of the year, and proposals were submitted to Mrs. Linzey who then interviewed the students on what materials would be used, she reviewed procedures (primarily for safety precautions), before approvals were given.

"I first gave the kids their instructions in February so they had three months to work on their projects and they took it very seriously," said Mrs. Linzey.  "They had to give me photos of their at-home effort, and after Passover break all of the experiments were brought into school for testing and the final preparations.

The experiments were judged by Nahid Attar (Leanor '17, Ilan '10),

Dr. Amy Baynash (Avi '16),               Don O' Quinn, Kale Sarinda,           Garry Smith (Carolyn '16, Erin '14), and "Mr. Chuck." Mr. Chuck and

Ms. Sarinda, both of whom are pursuing their doctorates, and who teach at TWU's School of Nursing, have served as facilitators of Yavneh's

2013-2014 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology team.

"Our judges were excellent and very committed.  We are all very appreciative of their time and expertise because they gave great criticism and compliments, and they all asked to come back next year," said Mrs. Linzey.  "They collaborated for an hour discussing all of the projects and tabulating scores, each of them impressed that most of the students' problems were solved in front of them."

"It was great to be back on campus and I am always amazed at the reception," said

Mr. O'Quinn, who has done a "million" science fairs and what stood out most was the diversity of experiments of this year's students.   "The displays were thoughtful, creative, and very  unique.  Usually I see a number of displays that are done over and over again but it was obvious that our kids didn't just pull their exhibits off the internet or from out of a book.

As a judge, I very much appreciate the effort."

"I was impressed by how well the students articulated their projects when they were being interviewed by us judges and I could follow the evolution of the experiments from start to the conclusion," said Mr. O'Quinn.  "It was apparent that the work really was done by the students themselves, and when asked to discuss their submissions, they were very well versed and knowledgeable in what they were talking about."

"Mrs. Linzey orchestrated a wonderful event and you could tell the kids spent a lot of time on their projects, and that they really learned from them," said Garry Smith, who is an electrical engineer by education and IC design engineer, who works in technical sales at ON Semiconductor. "This kind of active learning is important because it urges the students to apply scientific methodology to a problem, beyond book learning, and then to design experiments to prove or disapprove their hypothesis, run experiments, and explain the results.  It illustrates, in real terms, the whole process, in a manner that exposes and excites them about science."

"Through their work, I can see that they understand the concepts and curriculum, motion, dynamics, energy and it was all shown in their projects.  In chemistry, many went beyond the concepts we did in class - reaction speed and more," said Mrs. Linzey.  "I have loved working with my students this year, some come on weekends to work, others stay on campus until late in the evening, and most of them really care and want to learn. In my heart, soul, and eyes they are all winners."
