9 IYYAR - 5774

From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

One of the greatest advantages of attending a Jewish Day School - and there are many! - is the ability of our students to live a life that is fully Jewish and fully American.  Indeed, while prospective Yavneh families care deeply that our students are well prepared for college and university, they are also drawn to Yavneh for its unique balance of academic rigor and religious inspiration.

Throughout the academic year, our calendar enables our families to fully celebrate the Jewish holidays in their home congregations, and in the Spring, we are blessed to celebrate "the Yoms" together as a school community.  From comforting one another on Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron, to celebrating Yom Haatzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim here on campus, the blessings of working, living and playing together in a secure and loving Jewish High School setting are manifest everywhere. And beyond Dallas, our seniors on the March of the Living have experienced the sorrows and blessings of our people in Poland and Israel, capping off a powerful four years here at Yavneh.

To those who have heard that education can be a largely thankless profession, our wonderful PTO has taken Teacher Appreciation Week to a whole new level - with wonderful food and countless other goodies - and we are so grateful for your support and caring!

Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh,

Dr. P.

Dania Tanur ~ Class of 2014

"Yavneh is:  Positive.  Inviting.

                              Filled with limitless opportunities."

Whoever coined the phrase, "good things come in small packages," must certainly have been trying to find the words to describe Dania Tanur.  Petite of stature, but grand in ruach, talent, determination, and academia, she is the complete package.

A native of Mexico City who moved to Dallas as a toddler, Dania is the daughter of  Monica and Eduardo and the sister of Michelle '11 and Vanessa '18. Raised in a home in which the family's Latin Jewish environment is very much imprinted into her home life, Dania's fire and strength leads her in everything she does. A graduate of Levine Academy, and a member of Chabad of Plano/Collin County, Dania's traditions are rich.

"Dania's worldliness knows no boundaries and surpasses her years," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins.  "But it is her maturity, self-awareness, and keen insight that make her stand out as a student and global citizen. I have enjoyed our conversations in and out of class and can only imagine the profound impact she will have as she moves forward."

"I chose to attend Yavneh Academy because I truly enjoy learning about my religion, heritage and history," she said.  "I felt like it was very important for me to understand and discover who I am before I could make decisions about who I can be. The atmosphere and curriculum here has done that and more, providing me with both Judaic values and secular academics."

"Dania is a strong, dynamic young lady who brought fresh air, intelligence and a hunger for knowledge to our social studies classes," said Social Studies and Video Production teacher, Ari Dembo.  "She is not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, and she is very passionate as an active participant in whatever world she finds herself. Dania's positive attitude and winning smile gathers her friends along the way. I admire the way she is a positive role model for all her peers and have no doubt that for Dania, the sky is truly the limit."

Still to be decided where she'll hang her hat in the fall, Dania was accepted to the Global Scholars Program at American University, George Washington University, Indiana University, New York University, Northeastern University/NUiu, University of Miami, University of Southern California, and the University of Texas.  Planning to pursue a career in International Affairs law or relations - Dania's career goals are inspired by her awareness for world events, her inherent willingness to debate - or argue - her point, and her experience as a member, and attorney, of Yavneh's Mock Trial program.

In addition to Mock Trial, Dania has been and she was a member of Helping Hands for the Homeless, a leading athlete on our Lady Bulldog Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball teams, Captain of the latter, as well as of this year's Students Against Terrorism and Points for Peace organizations.  She helped rekindle Yavneh's Student Council, serving as a Presidential Appointee, and was a member of Hashinui, Spirit Club, she was a Student Ambassador, and the creator of the Student Challenge effort.

"Many of the programs and activities I participated in at Yavneh will stick with me, they really all are a part of who I have become," said Dania.  "I think the revival of Student Council, which I led with Jason Epstein, was definitely a learning 'moment,' and an experience which was invaluable.  We brought it back to help the school and how students communicate with each other and faculty. I hope future students will utilize it the way they feel will best help Yavneh and its future."

A member of BBYO's Reba Wadel BBG chapter, and the Liverpool '96 Girls Gold Soccer Club, Dania has spent her summers conditioning for her sports programs, as well as, in 2012, traveling to Costa Rica, as a volunteer of the Rustic Pathways Travelling Soccer and Service team.

"The quality of her work is excellent and the quality of Dania, as a person, is really magnificent," said Hebrew Language Department Chair, Dorit Bracha.  "Dania is amazing.  She is serious in class, but so very kind.  She is a mensch, and a fun student to teach, who always smiles thru her seriousness as one with intention for everything she does.

Buena suerte chica, may all the goodness in life find its way to your life's field - knowing you will score, and meet, all goals set before you.

Yavneh in Review ~

Yom HaZikaron ~
Remembering in Memoriam

Hearts tugged, and friends and faculty hugged and held tight on Monday, commemorating Yom HaZikaron, Israeli Memorial Day - one to recall and recount those who have served and given their lives for the survival of the State of Israel and her People.

"Yom HaZikaron is remembered much differently than Memorial Day as we know it in the United States - perhaps because most of us here are blessed to have lived in peacetime, and with far less an immediate connection to those whose lives have been lost," said Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy.  "In Israel, every family has been touched, every adult has served his or her time in the IDF, and everyone realizes the sacrifices, the pain, and the commitment to their country."

Since 1948, Israel has been a prosperous State, homeland, and country that has been on an historical roller coaster of persecution, terrorism, and anti-Semitism - combined with pure joy and happiness.  Our students watched a video of honor to those lost, and watched as time stood still in Israel - as the annual siren blared (actually twice on this day), where everyone stops.  Drivers get out of their cars - texting ceases - fieldworkers halt in the moment.

Social Studies and Video Production teacher Ari Dembo recalled his best friends of high school, and how just two years later, Tal, second from the left, gave his life as, while on patrol, his jeep hit a mine.  "Those are our heroes," said Mr. Dembo. "They are just a little older than our students, and while they are gone, they will always be with us, always forever young.

Annette Wolk remembered one close to our own community, too "forever young."
Sgt. Ari Yehoshua Weiss z"l, who was killed just before his 22nd birthday.  The son of Rabbi Stewart and Susie Weiss from Raanana, was killed in Nablus, defending his country, defending his friends.  Ari was a former AkibaKid, his father, Rabbi Weiss, had served at Congregation Tiferet Israel, before the family made aliyah.  click here to read Mrs. Wolk's thoughts of Ari, and those of Rabbi Akiva Wolk '00 - a childhood and beloved friend to, and of, Ari.

Avi Bracha, Rabbi Stanley Cohen, and Rabbi Michael Friedman led prayers of memoriam, and students Amitai Abouzaglo, Hadas Cohen, Ari Geller, Ori Guttman, Jacob Herstein, Austin Jacoby, Grant Prengler, and Erin Wernick too participated in readings and moments of respect.

Closing the morning's programming, those gathered sang HaTikvah, our anthem. our Hope.  May that, be what we always hang on to.

Yom HaAtzmaut ~
Happy 66th Birthday Israel!

The Yavneh Family turned its soul to celebration on Monday night and Tuesday,
wishing Israel a "Happy 66th," honoring our homeland's Independence Day.
The Yavneh Family volunteered in food booths and carnival caravans while
the younger set from Akiba Academy and the community
enjoyed romping and running through the arcade of anniversary joy.

Coordinated by Hebrew Language Chair Dorit Bracha, and her incredible team (as was the Yom HaZikaron memorial), the students watched a video about life in Israel today, in song, dance, and through the students creation of art, theatrical presentations of
the building of the State, the vote
at the United Nations on
May
14, 1948 - 5 Iyyar, 5708.

Our students met Efi Saadia - a Yemenite Jew whoshared his story (and then danced a never-to-be-forgotten number with Blake Fonberg '17), recreated moments of aliyah from the first wave in 1880, to groups who came to Israel from Iraq, from Romania and Russia, those who were illegal immigrants, and more.  They enjoyed a lunch of falafel, fruit, and fries - reminiscent of every best meal in Eretz Yisroel.

Happy Birthday Israel - you age with grace, with confidence, with courage, and with style.
