From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
As we finish our last full week of school before Pesach break, the watchword on campus has been "creativity." As educators and social scientists continue to refine the ways in which we measure academic ability - and eventual success in career and life - it is patently clear that creativity is one of the most important aspects of our uniquely human intelligence.
Here on campus, that creative quality has been manifest and ample. From the spectacular Literary Café to Color War break-out, from the exceptional visual arts to innovative music and improvisational theatre, our students are filled with ingenuity and passion that enliven the spirit of our campus.
Be sure to check out the latest issue of our YAD Literary Magazine, 60 pages worth of prose, poetry, painting and photography that will delight and impress.
Special thanks to our many wonderful supporters (see Donor List below) for enabling us to offer and sustain the most rigorous, spiritual and yes - creative - curriculum in all of Dallas. We are so fortunate and appreciative of all of your gifts!
Be sure to pick up the phone as Federation Super Sunday volunteers call you on Sunday - direct from our own Schultz Rosenberg Campus! Please stop by and volunteer to help if you are able.
Shabbat Shalom to all of our Yavneh Family,
Dr. P.

Adam Schor ~ Class of 2014
"Yavneh is: Small. Easygoing. Creative. "
"Is character king? I present Adam and rest my case," said Judaic faculty member, Rabbi Yaakov Tannenbaum. "High school classes tend to discover decorum only during finals; the rest of the year, there is the widest spectrum between somnolence and mayhem. Enter Adam: he is ever present in class in the fullest sense of the word, ever respectful, ever mindful."
At the start of his Junior year, Adam transferred from J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson to Yavneh, from where big brother Aviv graduated in 2007. "I knew a lot of kids who were at Yavneh and they only had good things to say about the school," said Adam. "It's a lot of work, and laid-back, at the same time, and I felt comfortable here right away. The small classrooms allow students to become close to the teachers, and for the teachers to focus on the students' needs. Because it is a smaller school, the students also become very close - not just within each grade, but across the four years."
Accepted to the University of Georgia and the McCombs Business School at the University of Texas, Adam will be a Longhorn who plans to solve the equation of his life's profession around numbers - a career focused on finance and mathematics.
"Adam is intelligent and has a strong desire to excel in all his academics. I compare his intelligence to Newton's third law: Adam's Actions equal reaction," said Lourdes Linzey who was Adam's Pre-AP Physics and AP Chemistry teacher. "In my Physics class, Adam sat at the end of the long table with his notebook, pencil and calculator ready to learn new concepts and during lectures, he would have two ways of telling me whether the lessons are clear or not. If he opens his eyes wide, it means he'd appreciate more examples. If he smiles, it's with his white teeth and deep dimple and that tells me he's ready to begin his work. How can I ever forget Adam?"
A Dallas native, Adam is the son of Ruth and Mark and the youngest brother of Aviv and Julian. He belongs to Congregation Beth Torah and is a member of BBYO's Morton Lewis AZA chapter, for which he has served as Shaliach (VP Judaic Education) and Moreh (VP Membership).
On Campus, Adam has been a member of Mock Trial, Students4Students, Students Against Terrorism/Points for Peace, and a starting player and Captain of the Varsity Bulldog Basketball team.
"I am very grateful for being able to participate in the Bulldog basketball program. I have made many close friendships that will last a lifetime, " said Adam, who just returned with the team from the Red Sarachek Basketball Tournament at Yeshiva University. "It has been an amazing experience to be a part of arguably the greatest year of basketball in Yavneh history."
"Calm, collective, and always focused, Adam never gets rattled or changes his expression during a game," said Athletic Director and Head Coach for the Bulldogs, David Zimmerman. "But inside is a young man who is competitive, passionate, and ultimately leads by his actions every day. He is a good teammate and even a better friend to all who have the good fortune to associate with him on a daily basis.
Adam's summers have been spent working at the JCC's Camp Chai and Sports Camp, as a referee at the YMCA's soccer, basketball, football and volleyball programs, and as an umpire for Plano Sports Authority's Girls' Softball program. "It was working at the camps that I learned I am good with kids and I really enjoyed it," said Adam who turned the tables as a camper last summer at BBYO's Chapter Leadership Training Conference in West Virginia. "I counseled kids about sports and made sure they had an overall good time and it was a lot of fun."
"Yes, he owns the court, controls the ball, and masters the basket. Yet, he understands the rules and etiquette of classrooms. His natural humility, thankfully missing on the court, is on full display in class," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "His insights are shared softly and gently, and wisely. He is never oblivious to the presence of others and always aware of the teacher's prerogative. Adam aims not to set the class on fire; thankfully he is one of the first to put them out. Honestly and gently and intelligently, Adam makes a great difference in class. Yes, character is king.
King of the court, king of the classroom, and king of that which will be his future - we were lucky to have this king, rule in our kingdom.

Dallas Kosher Chili Cookoff ~ Many thanks to Yavneh's 2014 Chili Cookoff chefs and volunteers who served great chili, and the great taste of Yavneh. "Executive" Chef Martin Appell (father of Allison '07 and Andrew '13) returned to stir, dice, and spice up his recipe, coaching our students about kitchen safety, recipe enhancement, and pepper prepping. Our kitchen crew this year, freshmen full, included Rosie Bernstein '17, Heidi Kravitz '17, Megan Lacritz '17, Alan Presburger '17, and Deb Silverthorn. Volunteers in the Yavneh booth throughout the day included Gianina & Shanee Abouzaglo '14, Niv '14, Yael & Yoram Avneri, Jordan Cope '14, Sophie Liebermann '17, Barbara & David Weiss, and Clara Wohlstadter '15. "I register us for the Cookoff early in the fall, and then coordinate the volunteers, decorate the booth, and work the Cookoff from before 8am until after 4 and I'm the last one out from our team - but I LOVE it," said Deb. The Cookoff really combines my 'Director of Communications,' and 'Community Liaison' titles, because I get to communicate to our community and all who come how great we are, to introduce people to 'my' kids and the Yavneh Family. Guests to our booth this year included Ginger Jacobs (grandmother of Aviva Linksman '08 and Sarah Linksman Verchow '04), a devotee of the Dallas Jewish Historical Society, who asked for a copy of our yearbook for their files, and Rabbi Sue Laikin Silberberg and Philip Silberberg, of Indiana University's Hillel, who were excited to hear of our many alumni who attend(ed) IU and our many current seniors, accepted to IU, still making their final decisions.
Congrats to Henry Litoff '03 who won 2nd prize in the Kosher Chili Cookoff.
The Cookoff, hosted by Congregation Tiferet Israel and co-founded by Past President of the Yavneh Board of Directors, Dan Prescott (father of Jordan '12 and Ethan '10), had Yavneh Family members - current and alumni students, parents, and grandparents volunteering and chili-ing! It was great to connect and reconnect, with so many.
