From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

In the final few weeks leading up to Pesach, our campus has been filled with activities that underscore the breadth and depth of a Yavneh education.

From their dramatic staging of "Antigone"      (a special 10-year anniversary production), to their tireless work on the YAD (our literary magazine), to laying out the spring issue of The Bulldog Print, our students have been hard at work creating, editing, designing and sharing their artistic energies in ways that enliven the entire school.

Meanwhile, our championship Varsity Boys Basketball team is in New York for the Yeshiva University Sarachek Invitational - you can watch them play on Sunday via live streaming video at macslive.com

Speaking of Sunday, we hope to see you at our Kosher Chili Cookoff booth between 10:30 and 4:00. Enjoy the chili, and vote for Yavneh!

Finally, please mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30pm for our spring Literary Café.          It promises to be a night of poetry, storytelling and art that you won't want to miss.

Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh!

Osher Saboni ~ Class of 2014

      "Yavneh is:  Comfortable. Fun. Jewish."

For Osher, the transition to Yavneh was seamless, he knew many of his classmates from Levine Academy, where he went to school from preschool thru eighth grade, and others he was campmates with at CYJ in Wimberley.  "I came in knowing most of the class and the kids I didn't - we connected pretty quickly, and we've stayed close throughout the four years we've been here."

"Osher is extremely hard working and driven to succeed," said Math teacher, Nicole Friedman.  "He never misses a homework assignment and frequently checks on his grades to ensure his success. Osher is a focused student who is not afraid to volunteer an answer or ask a good question."

"The schedule at Yavneh isn't an easy one, with the dual-curriculum and classes that don't get out until 5pm, but I think it has prepared me for college," said Osher.  "It's a big workload and the teachers make you apply yourself but they are always there to give whatever support the students need."

Born in Netanya, Israel, Osher moved to Dallas with his parents Doris and Yair and when he was just a toddler.  The older brother of Yael and Noa, with his family Osher is a member of Congregation Ohev Shalom.

Involved in Helping Hands for the Homeless, Mock Trial, Students Against Terrorism/Points for Peace, and as a Stage Crew member of the Theatre Department, Osher has enjoyed the variety of extra-curricular activities that Yavneh provides.

"I have rarely allowed any student to 'take a call' during my class. But when Osher was in the process of interviewing for a selective internship at a local hospital, I made an exception," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins.  "I am impressed at how well Osher balances in class and out of class activities and I respect his diverse interests greatly. He is a student who was always 'present' during class discussion no matter how busy his life becomes."

That call for the internship was from Medical City Plano where Osher has spent the last year, working thru the Guest Services department, and talking to staff and learning more about a career in the medical profession.  Preparing for a future as a cardiologist has been a priority for Osher who will begin the stages of making that dream come true when he enrolls at Indiana University in the fall.  "I have wanted to be a doctor since I was a little kid," said Osher, "and with the high regard I have for human life, I'm excited to help people live longer."

For those you will cure, revive, and help survive, Osher, Yavneh will always be proud.

Antigone Celebrates 10 Years of Yavneh Theatre ~

Bravissimo to the cast, crew, and leadership of Yavneh's Theatre program on the 2014 production of "Antigone."  The curtains rose in Pollman Hall on Friday, March 21 for a student and faculty review, and on Sunday in a production for the community.

Congratulations to the cast; Tom Erlich, Ethan Fisher, Denise Folz, Joey Goldman, Daniel Granat, Valerie Lopez, Eliana Schuller-Podbilewicz, Serina Romick, Mira Roosth, Michael Schramm, Gavin Shrell, Sam Weyser, and crew; Ari Geller, Scott Lacritz, Carolyn Smith, Erin Smith, Benji Zoller and to director Michael Federico.  To Yavneh's art aficionado Monica Ribald, and her team, the set design laid a magnificent backdrop, literally, to the show.

In a nod to the tenth anniversary of Yavneh's Theatre program, "Antigone" was a revival of sorts, as the show was the first play produced by our students.   The 2004 cast, which performed in toga and Greek tradition, included Rachael Abrams, Emily Ackerman, Edward Cohen, Leora Cohen, Sarah Epstein, David Fine, Gabbi Lewin, Charlie Saginaw, Maya Sallmander, Dustin Stanley, Tova Stolovitsky, Dylah Werbner, Justin Wohlstadter, and Rachel Zbolon.

"'Antigone' is a great piece, but a difficult one and it was exciting to be a part of a show that really takes work on the part of the actor," said Logan who portrayed "Ismene," sister to the title character. "It's a serious show, but we really enjoyed putting it together."

Dolev Homes for Youth ~

For more than 25 years, the Dolev Homes for Youth at Risk program has provided basic high school religious and general studies, offering students vocational courses including childcare, computer repair, cosmetology, hairdressing, professional pastry baking, hotel studies, fashion design and sewing.  Among its therapeutic services are counseling, videography, music, dance, drama, equestrian riding - which provides lessons of loving and responsibility, all of the programs intent on enhancing the students' self-worth and trust.

"The highest form of chesed is helping others help themselves," said former Dallas resident and Dolev Homes Director of Development, Mimi Tsadok.  "At our school, more than 120 young ladies are boarded in homes where they experience and share in a family - something most of them have not seen as example before."

"Our girls study by day, and when they are with their 'parents' they are asked at a dinner table maybe, 'how was your day, what did you learn, how are your friends," said Ms. Tsadok, who recently spoke to Naomi Schragers' Advanced Tanach and Jewish History classes.  "It's hard to imagine but that hasn't happened for most of our girls.  They come from problematic backgrounds but that can change through caring and community, and that is what we do."

The students, who take home economic courses, are able to earn money by baking bread and selling it back to the school for its cafeteria (most often 50 loaves a day), as well as other catering opportunities.  While some students are able to move on after high school, the program does allow for students to stay for up to three years, volunteering through the program.

"Our Advanced Tanach class typically focuses on the lives of our forefathers and mothers as presented in Tanach," said Mrs. Schrager, Yavneh's Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "We have incredible Biblical role models who embody the value of chesed, and this was an opportunity to hear from someone who currently devotes her life to chesed and the chance to see a modern day example of 'kol yisrael areivim zeh azeh' that 'all Jews are responsible for one another.'"

Mrs. Schrager's students showed immediate concern and interest to find a way to support the Dolev Homes project, from Dallas.  "Because Ulpanat Dolev serves high school girls, our girls were able to relate," said Mrs. Schrager.  "They are girls just like them, but who have not been given all of the advantages our girls have."

"In my Jewish History class we have been focusing on Zionism and creating meaningful connections to Israel," said Mrs. Schrager.  "We discussed that while we often focus on the 'big events' of our national narrative, our history is made of much more than wars and politics. Learning about the different faces of Israeli society, certainly including the less fortunate side, is just as crucial to our understanding and commitment to Israel as learning about her conflicts and policies."
