From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
What an extraordinary couple of weeks it has been - and continues to be - on the Yavneh Campus and in Dallas!
Last Sunday's 12th Annual Points for Peace tournament brought together the Dallas Jewish Community, as well as many from the greater community, in a dynamic student-led Tikkun Olam phenomenon among high schools across the country. And in our first season back in TAPPS, our student athletes were honored with a terrific array of athletic and academic recognition. Special kudos to our very own David Zimmerman for being named Coach of the Year! As we prepare for the revelry and good-natured fun of Purim (the twelfth graders have assured me that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" when it comes to their Senior Spiel ;o), we look forward to seeing you all during the weekend holiday. And on March 20, the CJE is bringing the top national leaders from the Modern Orthodox, Conservative and Reform movements to Dallas. (President Richard Joel of YU will also be visiting Yavneh that morning to speak with our students.) The special trialogue evening at SMU promises to be an engaging and uplifting experience for all who attend. Chag Purim Sameach and Shabbat Shalom! Dr. P.

Dalya Romaner ~ Class of 2014
"Yavneh is: Home. Welcoming. Family. "
When Dalya's maternal Great-Grandfather, Hy Vile z"l said "just make sure that if, at the end of our life you're accused of being Jewish, that there is enough evidence to convict," he couldn't have known how much evidence one of the
"le aves" on a future branch of his family tree would provide.
Very conscious of her every move, very present of how her behavior, her manner, and her actions count - for herself, her family, and those she touches - near and far - Dalya's every footstep is a step to be a strong Jewish woman. A woman who matters.
One of five young women, ages 14-21, to be honored, on April 3, as a Future Inspiring Woman of the Southwest, in recognition of her volunteer efforts, by the Southwest Jewish Congress, Dalya is the daughter of Jaynie and Ron, the sister of Micah, Adina '16, Ben '12, and Dejene '12.
"Dalya is a strong minded, thoughtful and very socially responsible individual and an obvious choice as one of the 2014 Future Inspiring Women of the Southwest," said Allyn Schmucker, Yavneh's College & Guidance Director, who nominated Dalya was nominated for the honor. "Through her constant work and detailed planning, Dalya achieves far beyond the average teenager. Not only is she an honors student, but she has participated and led activities and organizations with great finesse and skill. I cannot think of a more deserving young woman for such an award as Dalya is an amazing young lady whose accomplishments are only beginning."
Setting herself down a path of life giving, Dalya was on the founding board of directors as Vice-President, Public Relations Officer, and co-President for two years of Yavneh's Helping Hands for the Homeless. Since its inception, the organization has raised more than $80,000 supporting programs of Family Gateway, Genesis Women's Shelter, and Jonathan's Place. Last summer, Dalya traveled to Ethiopia to visit with Dr. Rick Hodes, once a stranger who, with his sons - years ago came to Dallas for medical care and then became family - more than a decade later continues to inspire.
"This trip was personal, I wanted to see where my Addis brothers came from and why America had such an impact on them. Yavneh's Students4Students has built schools, and we've been moved to care more about others since meeting the Hodes family, and since their family became ours," said Dalya, a Dallas native, a graduate of Akiba, and a member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla. "As I've grown up, I've realized that the Jewish People are meant to be the moral standard, and we have a responsibility to show others not just how to raise and donate money, but how to be an example. Age doesn't preclude the ability to help and I'm proud to go to a school like Yavneh where that is 'just what we do.'"
Dalya, who played on the Lady Bulldog Volleyball team and acted in Yavneh's "The Importance of Being Earnest," was a reporter, photo editor and layout editor on the Bulldog Print staff, as well as a key member of the Yearbook Crew. She's volunteered at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, interned at Retreat Central, and she is ardent about having participated in the AIPAC Policy Conference, most recently returning - more than ever - convinced of her opportunity to be heard.
"AIPAC teaches me that I can really be involved in how my government handles our country's relationship with Israel, that I can lobby congress, and voice my opinion to those congressmen who make the important decisions. As high school students, we are beginning to consider where we stand politically and, personally, I now know how important it is to vote for government leaders who support Israel and believe in the Israel-U.S relationship," she said. "In the throes of the Conference, I realize again and again how much America and Israel really communicate and work together, which I don't often see in the news, and it's nice t o see how we are partners."
Dalya is certain to have her enthusiasm for Israel even moreso ignited, if that's possible, after participating on the Aardvark Israel program. After a year of volunteering, travel, and study, she plans to return to the U.S. to attend college, her dream schools already notifying Dalya of her acceptance; Brandeis University, Lewis & Clark College, Northeastern University, Tulane University, and the Liberal Arts Honors Program at the University of Texas.
As a member of Yavneh's Student Teacher leadership, it's likely Dalya, who has taught a Freshman Chumash class, will take experiences to college like few of her peers.
"When thinking about which students would make good teachers, it did not take long to arrive at Dalya who is knowledgeable and passionate about Torah and has the patience to disseminate that knowledge and passion to others," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming. "Dalya is organized, thorough, mature and she has a fantastic sense of humor."
Consistently dependable, and a main leaders of the girls' davening, Dalya sets an example for her peers and the younger students. "Dalya has made davening at Yavneh a priority and she has shown others the beauty and importance of prayers," said Mrs. Schrager. "We have all benefited immensely from Dalya's presence and will miss her tremendously."

Wise words abound from the Schultz Romaner legacy, her Grandfather Howard telling Dalya that "if you live big, you've got to give big. And if you give big, it doesn't matter how big you live."
"My family and my education have taught me the responsibility I have to the people and the world around me," said Dalya. "I absolutely would not be the same person I am if I had not attended Yavneh and it's my favorite place in the world (except my grandparents' home). It is absolutely my home away from home."
We hope those other words of wisdom, "there's no place like home," will always ring true. As Dalya respects those who walked before her, too including grandparents Leslie, Carla, Leon z"l, Ruth z"l - leaving a path for those who follow her, to do the same, the Schultz Rosenberg Campus, with this Romaner Schultz child a legacy, is blessed.

It brings great pride and joy that we have so many players that have been recognized by other schools who we now know appreciate them, as much as we do. It's a great honor for these students who represent the best that Yavneh has to offer."
POINTS for PEACE, SHOOTS & SCORES ~
cli ck here to donate to Points for Peace Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism sponsored Points for Peace basketball tournament scored, raising over $40,000 dollars, bringing the organization's 12-year total raised to nearly $700,000. Sunday, March 9, found more than 1000 athletes, fans, supporters, and volunteers cheering on players of all ages, all gathered to dunk support for the Israel-based foundation, ATZUM. "The work of these Yavneh students is incredible, really nothing short of awe-inspiring," said Rabbi Levi Lauer, Founding Director of ATZUM, who made the trip to Dallas to celebrate the Points for Peace tournament in person. "The best Torah is the Torah you move to the streets, and that is true with learning, and with living our Torah." "When you put this much heart and soul into an event, so much effort to send funds for people who live 8000 miles away, and whom these people will likely never meet" said Rabbi Lauer, this his second trip to Points for Peace, ATZUM one of two organizations to be repeat beneficiaries of the tournament. SAT's Points for Peace, this year directed by Itai Guttman and Dania Tanur, was also led by Hadas Cohen '15, Jason Epstein '14, Adam Karnett '14, Talia Klein '14, Sam Kleinman '14, Steve Levine '16, Risa Mond '16, Grant Prengler '15, Erin Wernick '15, Benji Zoller '16, and David Zimmerman, Athletic Director and Director of Co-Curricular Activities. (apologies to anyone unnoted) Inclusion of all members of the community a priority, P4P organizers recognize members of the Special Edition teams including Benjamin Ackerman, Barrie Burstyn, John Feld, Josh Garner, Andy Gregory, Kameron Hoffman, Morris Tauben, Lara Schere, Monti Schneiderman, Barry Sheft, and William Weyser who played with members of the
Dallas chapter of YACHAD/National Jewish Council for Disabilities (many of whom are Yavneh students). "It was amazing to see how many people came on Sunday to the event and to see all the support that people gave us throughout the day was also incredible," said Itai. "Although it was very hard planning, and took a lot of time, it was all worth it at the end because we raised a lot of money which will be used to help those victims of terror in Israel. We were very lucky to have this opportunity to make such an impact in the world and I hope that impact will change something and help those in need. Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism has also supported Camp Koby, which provides a nurturing camp program, the Keren Malka Foundation which provides long-term no-cost loans of expensive medical equipment, One Family Fund's Adopt-A-Family, Sderot AfterShock and Lifeline to the North projects, to the NATAL Israel Trauma Center, and to ZAKA - Rescue & Recovery, a volunteer organization that serves in search, rescue, and recovery operations following terror attacks, bombings, or natural disasters. Proceeds from Points for Peace '14 will support the Roberta Project for Survivors of Terror, one of four key projects of ATZUM, founded in 2002 to remedy injustices in Israel society, and to encourage individuals to become social activists and agents of change. Named in memory of Roberta Bernstein (z"l), the project distributes funds and provides educational resources and dental care to the families of survivors of terror attacks in Israel, specifically victims of older attacks who are overlooked by programs of assistance focused on more recent cases. "It isn't that there is a need for today's dental decay, it is the remnants of what happened 10 and 11 years ago, and that which has not been followed, for a decade, that is causing the problems," said Rabbi Lauer," first introduced to SAT by former Yavneh parent and board member, Richard Rohan, who met Rabbi Lauer in Israel. "For many families, whatever resources they have may have been used for other medical or other pressing needs, and they really do need our help." In addition to dental care support, monies the students raised will help promote educational programs. Computers, tutorials, and preparation for matriculation exams are all needed for those injured, and members of the families of those who were directly injured. Rabbi Lauer noted that funds go to helping in the immediate healing, and that there are inevitable consequences to hundreds of thousands of others. The connection to SAT and the Stateside outpouring of support is meaningful to Rabbi Lauer, who hopes to connect to a "Jewish Tooth Fairy," to help provide supplies for him to share through ATZUM. "We have the dentists, but the supplies are so very expensive. We have so many patients who were hospitalized during the intifada, and other terroristic offenses, and who so many years later need our help. For a 'tooth fairy,' to appear, in the form of suppliers with implants, fillings, so much to be shared - that, would be tremendous." "With ATZUM's 'Jewish Tooth Fairy Fund,' we can see the extent to which the organization cares about survivors," said Dania. "With our community's donations, which we hope will inspire others, they will hopefully be able to afford supplies and take care of those affected." "Points for Peace was an incredible success due in large part to the leadership of Dania and Itai and our entire Student board - this is what Yavneh is all about. Our students, and our school, believe in going out and performing tikun olam, repairing the world, and Sunday was evident with the incredible monies raised, and the desire to more," said Coach Zimmerman. "This is what can be accomplished, and achieved, when we are driven by not only a cause to be passionate about, but to see our kids doing so because it is the right, and Jewish, thing to do and way to live."
