From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

My maternal grandmother, of blessed memory, used to say: "When you have your health, you have everything." Indeed, everything we do at Yavneh is rooted in our deep commitment to the physical, emotional and spiritual health of our students and families.

Next week, we will welcome the highly respected Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD) program to Yavneh, to educate our students, faculty and parents on the latest research and best practices regarding risky behavior among  teenagers, including drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and other behaviors that pose  dangers to our teens and others.

As I often tell our students, their health and wellness is a necessary precondition to accomplishing anything they might wish to do, personally or professionally.  Therefore, as parents and educators, it is so important for us to enhance and support their ability to make healthy and safe choices as they navigate their teen and college years.

Speaking of safe, healthy choices, please join us to cheer on our Boys Varsity Basketball Team - and celebrate Havdalah as a community - in their big playoff game Saturday night, beginning at 8:15pm in the Schultz Family Gym.

From all of us at Yavneh, Shabbat Shalom -

and Go Bulldogs!

Valerie Lopez ~ Class of 2014

      "Yavneh is:
Unique.  Opportunistic.  Supportive ."

For Valerie Lopez and her family, the search for truth, their truth, set them from McAllen to Dallas, from a world of wonder, to Dallas' Jewish community, and a school for Valerie to follow her heart, and her families chosen religion.

"After feeling there was something beyond the explanations of Christianity, which my parents couldn't connect to, and insight into many religions, we found Judaism and it is our truth," said Valerie, the daughter of Martha and Ricardo, and the sister of Jocelyn and Leslie. "We began learning and practicing at home, studying with another family.  It was maybe not properly observant, but it what I knew."

Connections and circumstances brought Valerie's father to Dallas for the High Holy Days, and then the whole family for Chanukah - and the decision to move to a Jewish community, and to become Jews, was made. The family, since their arrival, has been affiliated with Congregation Achdut Israel.

"I thank my parents for what is mine - for what is the best decision they ever made," said Valerie. "I wouldn't want to go back to the previous life. I didn't grow up Jewish, but the beliefs of being respectful and honorable, really the basis in our Torah, are lessons that have always been first in our home.

"My parents wanted me to attend a Jewish school so I could learn more about our newly accepted lifestyle," said Valerie who moved to Dallas just a week before the start of her Freshman year, her family then recently converted to Judaism.  "Yavneh's dual curriculum makes it possible for students to learn about their Jewish roots and to maintain Judaism in their lives."

"I thought it was unusual when I heard of students going to their teachers' homes for whatever reason, but then, as the years went by, I realized that we are a family, and the visits, meals, and connections, became understandable, and not at all unusual."

"Valerie displays the leadership and student initiative that we seek in our students," said Associate Principal, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum.  "Most importantly, she has always displayed a sincere interest to grow in her spiritual and religious commitments and, as she continues to grow, I know that she will continue to make us proud."

With premiere roles in Yavneh productions of "The Secret Garden," and "Epic Adventures in a Rinky Dink Art Museum," Valerie will take her last Yavneh bow on the Pollman Hall stage, as a member of the chorus in the upcoming production of  "Antigone."

"Valerie has matured into an amazing young woman.  She has become our Leading Lady - starring in productions and a leader of our burgeoning theater club," said Dr. Tim Cloward, Assistant Principal.  "You can see her growing self-confidence; she is becoming a very self-assured young woman."

In addition to making Pollman Hall's stage a second home, Valerie is a member of Yavneh's Lady Bulldog Soccer team, serving as team Captain for two years, she is a member of Students4Students - through which she has volunteered at the Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet, and, as a member of the Mock Trial team, she has served as timekeeper and portrayed the role of case witness.

Continuing her spiritual and personal journey, Valerie will spend next year at Machon Maayan, located between Jerusalem and Ashdot. Accepted to the University of Texas/Arlington, when she returns to the U.S. Valerie plans to pursue a career in speech pathology and audiology, business management or to even follow her acting ambition.

As a member of the Dallas chapter of National Council of Synagogue Youth, Valerie is a leader of a Mishmar class. "It's fun because Rabbi Lomner always has interesting things to say," said Valerie.  "It's kids getting together and having cholent or sushi.  We learn a lot and have fun at the same time."

Valerie has spent recent summer "breaks" volunteering for the American Red Cross and in Israel, a volunteer for NCSY's GIVE; Girls Israel Volunteer Experience.  "GIVE was an incredible program and I really got to see so much of the country," said Valerie.  "We did chesed projects in so many parts of Israel and I got a deep look into the lives of the people there, not just a tour guide's visit."

"After GIVE I wanted to go to Israel for a year - I really feel like I was home there," said Valerie.  "I want to learn more about our history, heritage, and to experience seminary life - to learn more about what life as a Jewish woman is.  I want to go beyond studies and exams, to studies and applying the lessons to my life in the place where it happened.  I'm excited to grow more in my Judaism and in my life."

And we are all excited to grow as we watch you, with pride.

Dr. Perry Brickman ~ History Visits Yavneh's Halls ~

History stepped out of the books and into the classroom when Atlanta residents Shirley and Dr. Perry Brickman visited Dr. David Portnoy's Senior Seminar classroom.  Dr. Brickman was featured at the Dallas Jewish Historical Society's Andres Family Lecture Series event, "From Silence to Recognition: Confronting Discrimination in Emory's Dental School History," and his visit was coordinated by DJHS Executive Director, Debra Polsky.

"There are many chapters of exclusion of Jewish Americans, of bullying, anti-Semitism, and of violence," said Dr. Portnoy in his introduction.  "In your generation there have been Jewish Presidents of universities and colleges; Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and here at Collin College, but it wasn't always that way.  It's a heroic thing that Dr. Brickman did."

Dr. Brickman, a retired oral surgeon and former Emory University student, one of many who suffered discrimination - ultimately ousted from the school - told the students of the prejudice, then sharing an excerpt of Emory's ultimate public apology, "From Silence to Recognition." (click here to watch).

"This story stayed hidden from the public eye for more than 60 years and that is a testimony to Emory's ability to deny, suppress, and to cover up discrimination and anti-Semitism," said Dr. Brickman, "and it's sad that the Jewish community valued political correctness to such a degree that they refused to confront a powerful institution that was harming its Jewish students."

Dr. Brickman's story, and that of many others was very much kept quiet by those who suffered, himself included - and only after he read the ADL book "Some of my Best Friends Are ...," did he investigate amongst his former classmates, conducting interviews in 20 states, determining the severity  and deepest truths of the issue.

A "fraternity of silence" Mrs. Brickman called it, her husband ultimately producing a documentary on the subject. Essentially, 65 percent of the Jewish students at Emory's dental school either failed out, or had to repeat significant amounts of coursework. "There were four Jewish boys in my class. All four of us were gone in two years," said Dr. Brickman, noting the contrast to his experience at Emory as an undergraduate.

His ultimate consideration to Yavneh's students, a heartfelt message of four lessons:

1)   I wanted to bring the truth to light, the response - the ultimate apology - unintended by me.  Know that it's never to late to right a wrong, and always have the courage to apologize, do it quickly, open, and with sincerity.

2)   When the man who served as dean during the time in question resign - the matter was "closed."  Never leave the wounded on the battlefield, and don';t wait to be asked for help.

If someone falls, you pick them up.

3)   It took years to find the students whose life paths were changed. Many had felt humiliated and shamed.  Regardless of adversity, you can determine your own futures.

4)   The truth must always be honored.  Keep your eyes and ears open and realize it's never too late to apologize.  Emet tirdof, tzedek tirdof ~ righteousness shall you pursue.

Yavneh Leadership in the Community -

Strength at BBYO IC 2014 ~

photo credit & appreciation to unknown participants and Michelle Friedstadt '14

Kol Hakavod to Yavneh's representation at the BBYO International  Convention (IC), hosted last  weekend at Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel.  With more than 2000 Jewish teens, from 20 countries, gathered together - it was Jacob Herstein '15, Gadol of North Texas Oklahoma Region, who officially opened the convention.  Joining Jacob in leading the global teen connection, were Yavneh emissaries; Mika Stein '13 Grand Aleph Godol/ International President and Gary Levine '14 Grand Aleph Shaliach/International Vice President of Judaic Programming, Community Service and Social Action.  In addition, close to 50 Yavneh students, from numerous BBYO chapters, many holding chapter and regional offices, attended the IC.

"Seeing IC unfold as one of the event's planners was unreal and even that is an understatement," said Gary.  "It was the culmination of working throughout the year to provide a home - a haven - for thousands of Jewish teens around the world.  We came together and the energy was unprecedented.

Mika, introduced with honor by his Zeida Moe Stein, gave an amazing State of the Order address, including a multi-faceted  shout out to Yavneh.

Yavneh Family members on the speakers' menu include Jaynie Schultz (Yavneh Board member and Mother of Adina '16, Dalya '14, and Ben '12) who spoke about Life Lessons on Leadership and Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum who co-led a Rebbe's Tisch with Shabbat singing, storytelling as well as a discussion titled Anti-Semitism Goes Viral: Seven Reasons Why They Hate Us which had more than 200 teens participate. Bertta Herstein (Mother of Jacob '14 and Jillian '12) was on deck, medical kit in tow.

"I was so excited to be invited to come an teach Judaism to teens from all over the world who may not have local opportunities for learning and it was such a great experience to see our students in action. Not only did many of our students to lead Kabbalat Shabbat with their singing and dancing, but I also had them teach a beautiful niggun to the other kids Friday night at the Rebbe's Tisch," said Rabbi Tannenbaum who also led a Carlebach-style service Friday night.  "That is why I go. I love teaching and impacting other teens. BBYO brings together teens from all over the world and I savor these opportunities to be able to help them bring Judaism alive to these groups."

"Having Rabbi Tannenbaum there made the experience even more special," said Gary, "as I was able to share the feeling of being inspired by his insight, presence, and passion for Jewish education with some of my closest friends around the country and world."

Indeed, Jewish teens of the world inspired by Yavneh connections - inspiration, indeed.
