From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

When my wife Shira and I moved "down south" to Texas a few years ago, we did not expect to be dealing with the kind of cold weather that has marked the past few weeks here in Dallas. And, as you can imagine, trying to navigate the various  "microclimates" from which our teachers and families come to Yavneh each day has been a bit of a learning experience.

One of the most important lessons we teach our students at Yavneh is to distinguish which areas of their lives are in their control from those that are not. A prime example: once our seniors send off their college applications, we encourage them not to worry about the outcome or process from that point on, and to assure them that they have done everything in their power to put their best foot forward.

The often unpredictable variations in our weather remind us that, while we determine much of what goes on in our lives, there is much that we still do not control.

Thanks for your patience, flexibility and understanding with the sometimes difficult decisions we make - and stay warm and safe over Shabbat!

On behalf of all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

Gary Levine ~ Class of 2014

       "Yavneh is: Routine. Powerful. Enabling."

The son of Sylvie and Ian, and the brother of Steven '16, Gary Levine is definitely dedicated as a bright, beguiling, young outstanding representative of the Yavneh Family.

"Yavneh, the Levine Academy, and BBYO have given me a sense of commitment, and a desire to continue the spirit and values that I love.  I knew that coming to Yavneh would mean going to school each day for longer hours than the average high school student, but I wanted the best education and success for myself as possible," he said. "Yavneh's small classes, and study hall periods, make it possible to manage the long day, and whatever extracurricular interests a student has."

Gary knows much about managing his time to be sure that extracurricular interests get met, he serving on the International Board of BBYO as its Grand Aleph Shaliach/International Vice President of Judaic Programming, Community Service and Social Action.  As Grand Aleph Shaliach, Gary has worked as a resource, advisor, and sounding board for his counterparts across the system. He has focused on enhancing the Judaic content in programs, overseeing initiatives that highlight Jewish values and themes.

"Gary and I met in Freshman World Geography class and I was immediately taken by his incredible sense of humor, confidence and incredibly positive attitude," said Social Studies teacher, Ari Dembo.  "Gary is a leader, a deep thinker and not afraid to stand up and be counted, when called upon. He has strong feelings for his own community and of Israel."

"I have watched Gary develop extensive leadership qualities, and have seen his passion for issues that concern him," said Mr. Dembo.  "I can see Gary becoming more and more, an activist in our community, a 'mensh' and a leader that Yavneh can be proud of."

Gary is a member of Chabad of Dallas. In addition to BBYO, Gary has remained involved on-Campus associated with Yavneh's Helping Hands for the Homeless, Students 4 Students, the Entrepreneur's Club, and as an attorney on the Mock Trial team.

"Gary is obviously on his way to success in the greater world.  He has become a very self-confident young man, and my sense is that he is setting his sights high," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward.  "I've been very impressed watching all the effort he has put in to make himself a success here at Yavneh Academy and it's been a joy to watch his progress."

Accepted to the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, University of Georgia, University of Michigan, and the University of Miami and awaiting word from the University of Texas, this Dallas native wants to study marketing and accounting.

"I'm proud of the education I have, and the knowledge and resources that are available to me, to help teach my peers appropriately," said Gary who served his local chapter, Rubin Kaplan AZA #841, for two terms as Shaliach and for one as Moreh (VP Brotherhood/Education).   "We as Jews are a small, but mighty People and I want to do, whatever I can - to keep us strong."

"I've taken what I've learned in my Judaic classes, learning skills I have for the rest of my life, and been able to use them now, to share with my family, my friends, and with young Jewish teens," said Gary, who plays a role in the 2014 BBYO International Convention, with 1700 students convening in Dallas next week*.  He also participated in BBYO's 2012 International Kallah and the 2013 International Leadership Seminar in Israel, programs that complement his Yavneh education, focusing on growing Jewish identity, learning about Judaism around the world, a love and true understanding of Israel, and building lifelong friendships

"Gary is an outstanding teen who has the ability to touch others and to impart positive values to those around him," said Sherrie Stalarow, Senior Executive Regional Director, BBYO North Texas-Oklahoma Region. "He is a leader among his peers and a positive role model, displaying a strong sense of character, determination and commitment toward what he believes in."

Leadership, kindness, and academic strength - all certain traits to lead Gary to success.  His connection to his tradition, and commitment to its prolongation, both reasons why Gary's success, will too be ours.

Yavneh in Review ~

Heritage in Harmony ~ Pizmon in Concert~

Yavneh welcomed the voices of Pizmon, the     a cappella choir of  the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia and Barnard  universities.  Pizmon, with Musical Director - and Dallas native - Ben Goldwater (who attended both Akiba and Levine academies, as well as Shaare Tefilla and Congregation Beth Torah)  performed a number of pieces of their repertoire which includes a liturgical piece,  pop, English parodies, Yiddish classics, and children's songs.

The group, who will share Shabbat and a concert through their voices at Congregation Beth Torah this weekend, introduced themselves to our student body; choir members from around the country, majoring in Jewish Studies and Literature, in Engineering, Film & Television, Creative Writing, and more.

Students4Students; Then, Now, and What Will Be!

It was a chance meeting, a need for support, and many touching hearts that brought many of Yavneh's students and Dr. Rick Hodes, the Medical Director for the JDC in Ethiopia and his family, together.  In the ensuing years, those connections have expanded and inspired the formation, and efforts of Yavneh's Students4Students organization.

Four Yavneh alumni, Jori Epstein '12, Zoe Klein '09, Miles Pulitzer '10, and Ilana Wernick '12, all previously involved at the start of S4S, recently returned from Ethiopia, traveling with the University of Maryland Hillel and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, experiencing some of what their mission has been firsthand.

Dr. Hodes, who has lived in Ethiopia for more than 20 years, devoting his professional and personal life to the tenet of tikun olam, to repairing the world - has taken that responsibility quite literally.  He has adopted a family of his own, the medical health of

three of those sons, his original link to Dallas - the boys to be

patients of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, the Romaner Schultz families, the tie that binds, many years later.

"I'm forever indebted to Dallas, to the medical community for their great care, and to the Jewish community for their kindness to me and my kids," said Dr. Hodes, his sons Djene '12, Semegnew, Mesfin, and Mekonnen, who all attended Yavneh and/or Akiba academies at one point or another.

"When you go to rural Ethiopia and you see the trees that Ethiopians sat underneath to study, and then you see a cement schoolhouse with real chairs and a latrine, you realize that by building a school, you are raising the expectations, the experience, and the ability to succeed of a whole village," said Dr. Hodes.  "This is true especially for girls, since they have been under-represented in rural education. We thank everyone connected to the programs that help our children, and we hope you too will visit."

"Dr. Hodes and the incredible people who work for him are a huge inspiration to me," said Zoe, a University of Maryland senior, majoring in Psychology and Pre-Medicine, also earning a minor in Global Poverty.  Zoe, who also visited Ethiopia in 2013, her career goals influenced such that she now hopes to spend time working as a physician in a developing country, helped coordinate an effort to help Dr Hodes' work (click here to help) "Shabbat dinner at Dr. Hodes' was full of kids whose lives he has saved, and touched, in unimaginable ways."

"Yavneh instilled a sense of gratefulness in me and I am aware of the very privileged upbringing I had especially when it came to my education," said Miles, a junior at the University of Maryland, an Accounting major in the Robert H. Smith School of Business.  "To be able to help build a brick school for children who had formally been learning in huts made of soil straw was very meaningful and important.

"The trip was truly an incredible experience," said Ilana, a freshman in the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, exhuberant about seeing the S4S school and Dr. Hodes, as well as many other JDC-oriented efforts. "The trip was definitely a shock but I am glad I was exposed to a culture I didn't even know existed."

"The country has a rich culture and great potential, but that potential is currently

stifled by poverty, limited resources and most pertinent to my passions - limited education. I wanted to see how the Sera Warka school has affected the community to

better grasp what we can do from America to help Ethiopia and the most effective means to do so," said Jori, a University of Texas sophomore, majoring in Journalism and Plan II Honors, who co-founded Students4Students with Dalit Agronin '12 and Rachel Siegel '13.  "Before S4S, only 15 students from the village learned and they did so under an oak tree named Sera Warka (now the name of the Yavneh's S4S donated school.

The school, now at 80 students, atypically including many women, has already outgrown its facilities, is currently having 40 students study in the morning, and 40 in the afternoon.

S4S continues its efforts, beginning with this Monday night's (2/10/14) Bulldog Basketball & S4S Fundrai$er (click here for info), to raise the $12,000 needed to build an additional classroom at Sera Werka.

"This is a hands-on direct response  organization, and we see how our work affects the future of our world, near and far," said S4S President, Lauren Siegel '14, who with Rachel Siegel, initiated S4S Mentors, working with students at Richardson's Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet.  Yavneh mentors read with students and help them with assignments.  "We're very blessed to have the education and opportunities that we do, and I never could have imagined, before coming to Yavneh, the impact that a teenager can have.  We really can do anything we set our minds to."

"Yavneh's given us the tools to repair the world, supporting student initiatives wholeheartedly and exposing us to a broader world beyond our own community. Many who traveled with us remarked how incredible it was that the S4S project was completed in high school and how little they knew about social action in high school," said Jori.    "At Yavneh, it seems natural, a part of learning in a Jewish curriculum, a part of living a Jewish life."
