From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It's been a great week here on campus, replete with meaningful learning, impressive performances, and exciting games and activities.

On Tuesday, we welcomed more than thirty prospective students and their families for an evening of conversation, basketball, snacks (the smoothies were a big hit!) and learning about Yavneh. We are delighted with the interest these families are showing in our programs, and look forward to welcoming many of them to Yavneh next year.

And on Wednesday we celebrated the Arts at Yavneh.  Our annual Winter Arts Night this year featured slam poetry, jazz music and a wide array of visual arts and multi-media presentations.  We can be proud of the beauty of our Arts program, the excellence of our faculty and student body, and look forward to further growth of this important part of our rich school culture.

We are in the midst of welcoming prospective students to spend a day on campus, and if you know of any prospective students or families, please click here to let us know. Thank you in advance for recommending deserving students to us!

On behalf of all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

Adam Karnett ~ Class of 2014

   "Yavneh is: Relaxed.  Family.  Original."

"Yavneh prepares and teaches its students to balance things right from the start," said Adam.  "I'm confident that the experience of balancing a dual curriculum will have me prepared to face adversity in college with lots of work, and that I'll know exactly how to handle it."

"Being one-hundred-percent present in the moment is not easy and Adam never disappointed. He added to discussions and was eager to build inquiry into every text we studied," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins, who awarded Adam a 2012-2013 departmental award, crediting him a most consistent student. "Adam is not only prepared, but very present in class.

Already accepted to Indiana University and the University of Kansas, Adam is considering an engineering career, but would love for his dream job as an NBA scout to materialize.  Selected last summer to the Rabbi GeraldJ.Klein Internship program, sponsored by Jewish Family Service, Adam worked at the Dallas Arboretum.  A longtime Camp Young Judaea and Tel Yehuda camper, Adam spent the summer of 2012 as a Young Judaea Machon participant.

Adam, who has known many of his classmates since his childhood, has seen those relationships grow significantly.  "We always seem to be having fun and enjoying being at school," he said.  "I have learned a lot about myself, and many other things about life from Yavneh, that I don't think I would have learned anywhere else."

"It's been incredible to watch Adam grow and mature into an earnest and sincere young man. Along the way he has overcome many challenges, but he has always displayed a unique ability to remain focused on his schoolwork," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.

Adam, a San Antonio native, the son of Laura and Martin,   and brother to Josh '10, is a member of Congregation Shearith Israel.  He's been a member of Yavneh's Helping Hands for the Homeless, Mock Trial, the Red Cross Club, Students Against Terrorism and a Points For Peace devotee. Most often, Adam can be found, outside of class time,  on the basketball courts, co-Captain of the Varsity Bulldog Basketball team.

"Being a part of Yavneh basketball has taught me the importance of trust and sacrifice for one and other and I have seen myself transform into a more team oriented player," said Adam who is number three on the Bulldog record books for single game steals and number four for career steals, and number five for career assists, and who was nominated in 2010-2011 and then received Honorable Mention/Jewish Hoop American in the 2012-2013 Jewish Hoops America rankings.

"Adam gives his all and then some in everything he does on and off the court," said Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach, David Zimmerman.  "He's a true leader whose passion and effort is contagious. Adam will always sacrifice individual accolades for the overall success of the team and, because of that sacrifice, we are a better basketball program and a true family."

"When I leave here I hope to be remembered as someone who never slacked off, who gave it his all and who was a leader while doing it," said Adam.  "If people remember that about me, then I achieved my goals."

Adam, people know that about you now, and future Bulldogs will always know your name, and your intense dedication to guidance.  Goals - secured!

Yavneh Bulldogs Raking in the Rankings - State & National!

Yavneh's Varsity Bulldog Basketball team, with a record of 22-4, is scoring congratulations - now ranked #2 Small Private School in Texas and #9 Jewish high school in No. America.

"We have been through wins and losses both on and off the court and we are better for it. These experiences will make us a better team for the second half of the season but more importantly I'm hoping that these become lifelong memories and friendships that will last forever for all of our students," said Athletic Director and Head Coach, David Zimmerman. "We have received many gracious and beautiful emails and phone calls about how everyone loves Yavneh and our students. It brings a smile to my face, warms my heart, and brings me pride to know that our school is representing Dallas and our community so well."

"Coach Zimmerman has put us in position to do what we do and the experience my teammates have had is invaluable.  He's brought a system to Yavneh that puts the team first.  He truly loves and cares for every one of us," said Adam Karnett, co-captain of the Bulldogs alongside fellow seniors, Itai Guttman and Sam Kleinman.

"We play with a team first mentality and I don't think there is a single player on our team that cares about personal stats," said Adam.  "If we win, that's the only stat that matters to us.  Coach's passion for the game is so evident and clear and it's obvious that his only dream for this team is to not just achieve success, but to be sure to enjoy the journey."

"Coach trusts us on the court, and works us hard because all he wants us to do is succeed, not only as basketball players but also as great leaders in the Jewish community," said Itai.  "We love winning, but it isn't all about that.  These guys are a second set of brothers and we laugh a lot. The success we've had is because we work hard together and we genuinely like being together."

Coach Zimmerman's personal goal after coming to Yavneh was to build the reputation of the school and athletic programs so that nationally and state wide Yavneh would become a household name.

"Our number one goal is to get better. We've come a long way but we still have much to do," said Coach Zimmerman, noting that, after a 12-year break, Yavneh has returned to TAPPS (the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) as regulations including religious exemptions were provided to teams who do not participate in programming on Shabbat.   "We're hoping a good record in District will provide a chance to chase the ultimate dream of a State title. These are unbelievably lofty goals that at first seemed like pipe dreams but, because of our incredible administration, faculty, parents, coaching staff, and above all our amazing students, are beginning to become reality.

"TAPPS has given us something additional to look forward to, but we are all competitive and want to win regardless.  I don't make predictions, I play.  I want this team to go down as one of the most complete teams in Yavneh history.  We certainly have the biggest heart and each of us plays every game like it was our lastWe're playing well and winning games, but I'd rather be remembered as a group of good kids than a group of winners."
