From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

I was kvelling (beaming with pride) as my twelfth-grade students completed their mid-year exams in Government and Law this week.  On the faces of varsity captains, newspaper editors, student government leaders and club presidents, I saw tremendous intellectual focus and attention to detail and complex ideas.  And I was grateful - not just for the several hours of quiet, but for seeing these exceptional young people grapple with difficult concepts and how best to articulate them, capturing the most important ideas and cases we learned this semester.

In short, I got a rare glimpse of what kind of students Yavneh produces: by their senior year they are mature, experienced writers and thinkers, well prepared for the rigors of college and career. And beyond their academic maturity, this is a senior class renowned for the kindness and middot (manners, personal qualities) they share on a daily basis with teachers, rabbis, with one another, and perhaps most important, to the younger students here in the school.

We are in the midst of recruiting our new ninth grade class for next year, and if you know of any prospective Yavneh students, including ones who would enter grade ten or eleven, would you please click here to let us know?

We at Yavneh are blessed with students and families who combine the kind of academic rigor I describe with a rich Jewish school life and co-curricular opportunities that rival the finest private and public schools in the city.  We thank you in advance for recommending deserving students to us.

On behalf of my faculty colleagues, and all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom!

Tash Guaqueta ~ Class of 2014
       "Yavneh is: Home. Fun. Memorable."

"Home away from home" is a phrase that many have used to refer to the halls of Yavneh's Schultz Rosenberg Campus but for Nathasha "Tash" Guaqueta, the saying couldn't be more true.  For two-and-a-half of her four years at Yavneh, Tash has made Dallas her home, while her parents moved to Florida.  Yavneh's Family, keeping her close.

The Lopez (Valerie '14), Smith (Erin '14 & Carolyn '16), and Kravitz (David '09, Jonathan '15 & Heidi '17) families have made a commitment to Tash and her education beyond what most are called to do.  Martha & Ricardo Lopez, Debbie & Garry Smith, and Michelle & Brian Kravitz have opened their doors, their homes, and their hearts to Tash while, from afar, her own parents Lucille and Fernando have set the example of the essence of kibud Av v' Em, honoring thy Mother and Father.

"It started with a need for my parents to be closer to my grandparents to care for them, and it was supposed to be for just a couple of months," said Tash.  "I wanted to finish the year and so I stayed.  Each summer I reevaluated and I really do thank G-d every day that I'm still here. When people talk about the Yavneh 'Family,' I promise you it really is my family!"

A Floridian by birth, Tash moved to Texas when she was five, and attended schools in Irving before attending Akiba Academy.  "We wanted to be more of a part of the Jewish community and it was worth the commute," said the youngest of three, her siblings David and Hadassah, who lives in Israel and who is married to Yosef and the mother of Netanel and Atara, are older than she.  "Yavneh was the obvious choice for high school.  The small classes, the faculty who put their students first, were why I came, the whole experience is why it has been so important to me to stay."

"Nathasha is an impressive, independent young woman and I enjoy watching her voice grow through her writing," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins.  "She's worked very hard at elaborating through details and description and brought her work to the next level."

Ensconced in the Jewish Community, Tash is a part of the Congregation Shaare Tefilla family and attends weekly classes and programs of NCSY (National Council of Synagogue Youth).  She has also volunteered at the Richardson Animal Shelter.

Tash is a Lady Bulldog Soccer player, she's involved with the Mock Trial Team, and she is a Students4Students tutor at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet School. She acted in last year's "Epic Adventures in A Rinky Dink Art Museum," and she will return to the Pollman Hall stage, as a guard in "Antigone," as Yavneh celebrates 10 years of theatre.

"Being a part of the Theatre Department has taught me a lot, but I've come closer to a lot of my friends there too," said Tash.  "Because there are kids from all four grades involved, I've built relationships with kids I wouldn't have classes with, and, while we work hard, and put on I think great shows, it really is a great social opportunity as well."

"Tash is hardworking and she completes each assignment with all her being," said Art teacher, Monica Ribald.  "She's dependable and helpful and her eyes have been opened to art."

Having grown up with her father's bookshelves of medical manuals, Tash wants to follow in his footsteps, her own path as a Physician's Assistant or Psychologist. "I remember sitting with my father while he studied," she said.  "What I didn't understand made me even more curious." Already accepted to Florida Atlantic University, she awaits notices from the University of Florida and the University of South Florida.

Tash reiterates the "self-sacrifices," the families with whom she's lived, and the Yavneh Family extension, have made to allow her to stay here.  "It's taken many people, lots of hugs (and chocolate) from LuAnn and Sarah, and I really appreciate all that Mrs. Schmucker has done to help me apply to college.  It's been a lot of effort but I want everyone to know how much my being here has mattered.  I know my life will always be special because Yavneh is where I went to high school."

And Yavneh, dear Tash, will always be special because you were here!

Breaking News - The Bulldog Print is ONLINE!

The Bulldog online edition makes its debut today at www.thebulldogyhs.com

With eight years of newsprint savvy, and numerous local, state, and national awards, the journalism staff expands to the information superhighway - and away we go.

Congratulations to journalism adviser, Rachael Abrams  '07, a staffer in the print version's earliest days. "When I was a student at Yavneh, online news sites weren't as popular as print and I always thought print was the dream," she said.  "My eyes really weren't open to online publications until I worked as an editor for one, and now readers and writers have more options and more access to news."

"I applaud Ms. Abrams and the staff of TBP for their innovation and hard work, and for bringing our award-winning school paper into the twenty-first century," said Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy.

Staffers of The Bulldog online include co-Editors-in-Chief:

Jason Epstein '14 and

Austin Jacoby '15,

Web Editor-in-Chief: Benji Zoller '16, Managing Editor: Hannah Delagi '14, Graphics Editor: Scott Lacritz '15, Photo Editor: Erin Smith '14, and Arts Editor: Hanna Liebermann '14.  Contributors to the premiere edition are Louis Cohen '17,  Daniel Granat '14,  Jonathan Nurko '17,  Elimelekh Perl '16, Zack Pollack (Bulldog Coach),

David Rudomin '14, and Dania Tanur '14.

Stories in the first issue include "A Daily Struggle: Chairs" and "Heritage and Hoops." Contributing writers will rotate, articles will change every couple of weeks, and the sports section hopes to be updated after every game.

"The online magazine gives students the opportunity to give a greater voice to the student body and The Bulldog is edgier than our print edition and will feature unique content.  Benji has done a wonderful job helping me design and get all of the content on the website for our launch," said Ms. Abrams. "My goal is to get more writers who are interested in creative-writing; a magazine - format is the perfect medium for these students to thrive."

"The Bulldog online is a new, inviting format that anyone, anywhere, at anytime will be able to look at and see what's going on at Yavneh," said Benji. "Whether that means news, funny features, sports scores, pictures, poetry - written by faculty and students, doodles, and student reviews; all-things-Yavneh will be easily accessible.  It is inviting due to the short and sweet articles that are truly from the hearts of the students."

Junior Class Parent go to Class - College 101

The Yavneh Library a place for resource, for information, and for support - and on Wednesday night it was the place for parents of the Class of 2015 to receive all, via Allyn Schmucker, Yavneh's Director of Guidance and College Counseling.  As the college search, scholarship monies, and their children's professional futures move up on the "to do" list - in Mrs. Schmucker, Yavneh's students, and parents, have a tremendous guide.

Mrs. Schmucker, who this week officially began working with the '15 students, explained that the college application process, "begins when your children are Freshmen here, as they ready themselves academically, they are surrounded by peers who are like-minded in their goals for achievement."

On-Campus students will navigate through Naviance (www.naviance.com), a college and career readiness resource that helps connect academic achievement to post-secondary goals.  They will meet with representatives from colleges in the U.S. and beyond, they will be exposed to traditional and gap-year programs, and they will determine what the "reach," "target," and "probable," (formerly related as "safety") schools are for them.

At Wednesday's meeting Mrs. Schmucker reviewed Yavneh's "Junior Project," a notebook she has created, with years of experience, that helps students and their families prepare for the application process. The Junior Project is divided into 15 sections with worksheets and information about researching schools, what are the grades and testing scores required for schools, essay planning, what is the Jewish experience at schools, and more - all to help each student make realistic choices.

"College is not a trophy, it is a match and there IS a match for each child," said Mrs. Schmucker, chosen by Yavneh's students as the honoree of this year's Yearbook, and she believes it with a passion.  And for Yavneh's student, the teamwork, in making that match, is unmatched.

Florence & Joseph Weiner Memorial Basketball Tournament, held in Baltimore during  the last week, the Varsity team came in second in the tournament, our Lady Bulldogs fifth.  Scoring more points than a million free-throws, were the kudos and compliments that reached parents and our administration about our students behavior and manner throughout their stay.

The Varsity Bulldogs have finished the first part of their season with a 17-4 record, 9-1 in Texas as they've returned to TAPPS competition.  The team is ranked third among all small private schools in the state, and ninth, nationally, of all Jewish High Schools in North America.

Be sure to join the Bulldogs when the season resumes in January!
