From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

As we prepare for final exams,  I am struck by how our students tend to fall into three categories, which I shared with them this week following Mincha.

The first is acutely aware of all the preparation they must do, are stressed by what appears to be an insurmountable task, and tend to be overly anxious about the upcoming work. For this group, we must do what we can to calm their nerves and guide them towards a manageable schedule of study, healthy eating and quality sleep.

A second group tends to be less than fully aware of what lies before them
. They seem to hope, as if by magical thinking, that if they don't worry too much about exams, perhaps the tests will somehow go away. This group needs to be encouraged to confront their work, knowing that we will be there to support, comfort, and feed them.

And the final group tends to hold both the challenge and the solutions close at hand. They have divided their work into manageable tasks, and while they are quite busy with all the rigors of Yavneh, they are prepared to accomplish what is set before them. Neither too stressed nor not anxious enough, this is the group we all strive for. Social scientists call this healthy tension "eustress,"with the understanding that a certain amount of anxiety, but not an overwhelming amount, produces good work habits and results, and gives students appropriate rewards for work well done.

With an extra day to prepare due to the inclement weather, we wish you all a safe, warm and productive three-day weekend.

Shabbat Shalom and Go Bulldogs in Baltimore!

Daniel Granat ~ Class of 2014
       "Yavneh is: Amazing. Astonishing. Spectacular."

Center stage, at Yavneh and now moving on to the greater stage of life, is Daniel, the son of David and Valerie, and brother of Becca and Josh.  A Dallas native who has been accepted to the University of Kansas - and who awaits word from Chapman University, Hofstra University, Lynn University, Pace University, and Texas Tech - looks to eventually make his future on either of the coasts - on stage or screen.

"I can't wait to spend every day auditioning for roles and to start my professional acting career," said Daniel.  "I want to craft my skills so that I can become a great comedic actor.  The glass is always half-full and I want to be the one to make people realize that, even in the toughest moments."

Attending Yavneh allowed Daniel, a former AkibaKid and student at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, to find his place.  "I knew that I needed to attend Yavneh so that I could have a great education, and to have a more religious connection, but I enjoy going here because, for the first time in my life, I felt that I belonged.  Everyone here plays an important role in making THE Yavneh family."

"It isn't only the students that I can count on. I have never felt so close to an adult before I came to Yavneh.  A lot of my teachers sincerely think about their students outside of the classroom,  devoting their time to helping their students grow," said Daniel, noting  teachers have bought him books, printed articles, and had guests come to Yavneh to discuss his passion for acting.

"Daniel is a hard working student, even when it doesn't come easy.  I admire his academic approach to learning about the art of acting and especially comedy," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins.  "To learn more about the industry, he began writing movie reviews, using what he learned in AP English to further his own career goals! Daniel is bravely carving out a niche for himself and educating himself in a very independent way."

A member of Congregation Ohr HaTorah, and associated with Congregation Shaare Tefilla and NCSY, Daniel works part time at Zinga Yogurt.  On Campus, he has been a member of Yavneh's Kidz Korner, Spirit Club, and the Yearbook Crew.  He is a movie critic for The Bulldog Print and he has acted in "Epic Adventures in A Rinky Dink Art Museum," "The Secret Garden," and "The Importance of Being Earnest."  In this year's production of "Antigone," celebrating the 10th anniversary of Yavneh's Theatre program, Daniel will portray one of three narrators.

"I saw Shrek and I could mimic the voice of the donkey," said Daniel who co-hosts "That Nerd Show," an online radio program.  "People laughed, with me - not at me, and I realized I wanted to spend my life laughing, and making others do the same."

"Daniel is becoming one of our great Yavneh success stories," said Associate Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward.  "He has made tremendous progress and we are all interested to see where he will end up.   Daniel has infected much of the student body with his passion for theater, and his talent and desire for acting and writing promise to take him in exciting directions."

Daniel's ability to make people forget their troubles is a talent, and a gift, and it is his to open and share with the world.  Lucky for the Yavneh Family, we got to giggle thru him first!

Yavneh in Review

Redeemed - among friends

Yavneh students and faculty shared in a momentous, and rare occasion - the
Pidyon HaBen, or "redemption of the firstborn son," of one of our own.  Ethan Pearson '15, for whom the ceremony, wherein the father of a firstborn male redeems his son by giving a kohen, five silver coins, thirty days after the baby's birth, did not take place.

Long ago, the Jewish firstborn were considered the sanctified priestly class. In Egypt, they were brought into G-d's service when they were spared from the plague of the firstborn.  After the time when the Jews bowed and relented to the golden calf, that status was forfeited and the priesthood was transferred to the Levites, those who had not participated in such revelry. The Pidyon HaBen provides for all first born, male Israelites, to be consecrated to G-d, redeemed from a kohen.

"The Pidyon HaBen here on Campus really goes way beyond experiential learning, not only are the lessons learned in the four walls of the classroom allowed to emerge and break through into the world of practical experience, but life-cycle events such as this are so exciting to me personally because they represent the continuity of the Jewish People," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum, who, with Rabbi Yehoshua Quinn conducted the ceremony. Rabbi Quinn, who works with the YJP (Young Jewish Professionals) division of DATA, "sold" coins to Ethan in order for him to take the responsibility upon himself, to redeem himself, at this time.

"It is a mitzvah which typically celebrates the welcoming of a new generation of Jewish people and even though this particular Pidyon HaBen was celebrated only later in life," said Rabbi Tannenbaum, "it not only signifies the role that our young have among our great people, but it also reflects  a core Judaic value, that it is never too late in Judaism to make up for what we missed and to put into practice our new found knowledge."

"We studied about the laws and traditions of the Pidyon HaBen and I knew it was something I hadn't been through as a baby," said Ethan, a student in Rabbi Tannenbaum's Jewish Thought & Law class.  "I talked about it with Rabbi Tannenbaum and it was important to me to remember what happened in our history and for me to complete this mitzvah for myself.  That I could do it with my friends, in the midst of the Yavneh community, made the experience that more meaningful."

PTO breakfast & lunch

Many thanks to Yavneh's PTO for a sweet treat breakfast for our students, and a lovely luncheon for the faculty - all done in good taste!  Thanks to PTO representatives Julie Harris, Faye Lavi, and Janyce Steinbrecher for their roles in planning, prepping, and primping us all!

Chanukancert & Dancin' Like Dreidels

Yavneh's own rabbinic trio; R' Friedman, R' Lomner, and R' Shulkes showed their "true colors," every color of the rainbow as they jammed, and drummed, their way through Yavneh's first annual "Chanukancert" while student danced, sang, and celebrated.
