From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

During this once-in-many -lifetimes  holiday week that much of the Jewish American world is calling "Thanksgivukkah," we at Yavneh are especially thankful for:

Our Alumni -

Thank you for your continued connection, enthusiasm and support. As I announce each year at Graduation, "Please consider coming back to Dallas - of course to visit, but also to live.  You will always have a home here."

Our Teachers and Staff - Without you tireless devotion to subject and student, we would simply not be the incredible school community that we are.  Please enjoy a well-deserved holiday!

Our Students - Being a teenager isn't always easy (and being around you isn't always either ;o), but the joy, friendship, work ethic and positive neshama (soul) that you bring to campus each day is what makes it all worthwhile for all your peers and adults at Yavneh.

Our Parents - The trust you put in us each day is both humbling and reassuring.  Our commitment to educate your children is what keeps us going as we endeavor to help you raise them into real mentschen.

Our Board, Our Donors and Our Greater Community - Thank you for your time, your resources and your unbelievable commitment to our success.  We could not do what we do without your help and support.

So thank you all - for everything.

On behalf of my colleagues, and all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a (deep breath) ... Happy Hanukkah, and Thanksgiving, and Shabbat Shalom!

Michelle Friedstadt ~ Class of 2014
          "Yavneh is: Welcoming. Inspiring. Supportive."

When Michelle walks in a room or onto the volleyball court, you can tell she means business.  With purpose and commitment, to sport, charity, and her future, this Yavneh senior is serious.

Michelle believes Yavneh has made a difference in her life.  "I knew I wanted to continue to learn Hebrew and to strengthen my Jewish education," said Michelle, who graduated from the Ann and Nate Levine Academy. "I love Yavneh because of the amazing relationships that I have built with my peers and teachers and because Yavneh is a school where we are able to be ourselves and do what we love. We have the opportunity to learn about our culture, religion, and history, as well as life lessons.  It's definitely been the right fit for me!"

"Michelle combines steady determination and loving kindness.  One of the hardest working students I have taught, Michelle sets goals and follows through, without faltering," said Dr. Paula Harvey, of Yavneh's English department faculty.  "Michelle will enrich any college community with her intelligence, strong work ethic, and compassion. I expect great things from this young woman."

The daughter of Dinora and Jaime, and sister to Gabe '17, Michelle is intensely proud of her Jewish Mexican heritage, she and her brother first-generation US born.  She is a member of Chabad of Dallas and BBYO's Jennie Zesmer chapter and she has represented Team Mexico for the JCC Maccabi Games (volleyball) and as a swimmer on the Dallas Elite Swim Team.

Michelle, who has been a camp counselor at Camp Gan Izzy, and Chabad of Dallas babysitter, works at Benny's Bagels, says that her summer and year-round work opportunity there has helped her to build a strong work ethic and to become more responsible.  "I have learned how to work with others and for a boss, how to deal with customers, and be involved in a business and see how things run 'backstage.'"

A certified open-water SCUBA diver, who loves adventure, Michelle has a true desire to travel, and explore new places, cultures, and places.  With plans to major in Communications, and awaiting a number of other acceptances, Michelle has been accepted to Bradley University, Indiana University, and the University of Missouri.

In addition to playing volleyball as a Lady Bulldog, Michelle has just co-hosted the Helping Hands for the Homeless event, which this year raised more than $20,000 to support Family Gateway's Montessori school.  Michelle has been a Student Ambassador, a member of the Bulldog Tennis Team, Spirit Club, Students4Students, and Uniting Students of Dallas, she's been a costume and make-up designer for the Theatre program, a volunteer for the Students Against Terrorism Points for Peace basketball tournament, and a member of Yavneh's Yearbook Crew.

"I love that at Yavneh you can be a part of so many clubs and teams and really make a difference," said Michelle.  "If you want to change the world, all you have to do is have an idea and get involved.  Our administration supports us and I'm proud that the students really do make it happen."

"Michelle is such a sweetheart!," said math teacher, Nikki Friedman.  "She is very committed to her sports activities outside of the classroom and excels at balancing her extracurricular activities with her academics. NOT an easy feat! Michelle always maintains a positive attitude, works hard, and is a true pleasure to teach."

A pleasure to teach, to cheer on, and to watch grow into a beautiful young woman, Michelle has made her mark at Yavneh, and others will carry on.
