From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It has been an emotional week on Merit Drive.  In short, it has been a real challenge to balance the positive and negative emotions that attend a week such as this.

On the one hand, we have celebrated the great successes of our teams (Boys Varsity is now 9-1), a terrific Helping Hands for the Homeless dinner (over $20,000 raised) and a Spirit Week filled with joviality and friendship.

On the other hand, as every Dallasite and every American knows, we are also called to commemorate one of the most difficult events in our history: the assassination of President Kennedy right here in our own city.

So, as a faculty, we have tried to communicate this message: The eyes of the world are fixed on Dallas this week, and we want you to understand and appreciate the complex, human experiences we all share.  Indeed, it is an important part of Jewish Tradition to be able to hold competing emotions in your head and heart.  Consider, as we discussed as a school, the broken wine glass at a Jewish wedding, or the salt on the challah - two bitter herbs, if you will, that our tradition teaches us to incorporate into otherwise joyous events.

As the joint holiday of "Thanksgivukah" approaches, stay warm and enjoy your families and friends - and please join us Wednesday evening for candle lighting and alumni basketball.

On behalf of my faculty colleagues, and all of us at Yavneh, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom!

Dr. P.

Jacob Feist ~ Class of 2014
          "Yavneh is: Academic.  Welcoming.  Rewarding."

When the Feist family, Jacob's brother Max, and parents Mariam and Bob moved to Dallas last year, Yavneh became the boys' home away from home.  "Yavneh is a small family environment and it reminds me a lot of the school I attended previously," said    Jacob, who previously attended Philadelphia's Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy. "Easily, the best part about Yavneh is the strong student body and, even though I've only been here a little more than a year, my friends and I have good relationships and we really support one another."

"With an array of wonderful teachers, of both Judaic and General Studies, being at Yavneh means both learning and enforcing Jewish values and that is important to me," said Jacob.  "The relationship between teacher and student is seamless. Students feel comfortable receiving and asking help from their teachers, and constantly learn a great deal from them."

"Jacob is a stellar math student.  He works hard, takes the initiative and is a natural leader," said Math teacher, Nicole Friedman. "He is very involved with BBYO outside of school but he also knows how to balance his extracurricular activity with his schoolwork. Jacob always greets others with a smile and adds positive energy to the classroom. I was shocked to find out that he was a transfer student. It feels like he's been part of the Yavneh family forever."

Already accepted to Indiana University, the University of Alabama and the University of Kansas, Jacob is still awaiting word from Texas A&M, the University of Georgia, the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, and the University of Texas.  Wherever he attends, he is interested in pursuing a political science degree - an interest fostered by his experience last summer, he was a participant on BBYO's International Leadership Seminar in Israel.

Jacob's summer Jewish connection remained strong through the summers, as in addition to his Israel experience, he also attended the Capital Camps Leadership in Training Camp and BBYO's Chapter Leadership Training Conference.

Jacob is a member of Yavneh's
Students4Students and he shares the role of Secretary of our school's Student Council, with David Rudomin '14. A member of BBYO's Rubin Kaplan chapter, and NTO Regional Secretary, he is also the Beau to the Fannie Sablosky chapter.

"There are some students who lead with a strong voice and a loud presence. No less effective are those that lead in a quiet and unassuming manner," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "Jacob is a leader of the latter sort. You never hear Jacob raise his voice or scream at others, he simply leads with his quiet and refined personality. With his fine sterling character, Jacob serves as a great role model for, not only his fellow students, but for so many Jewish teens around the country."

"Getting involved when we first moved here was difficult, but it forced me to be outgoing - it was sink or swim," said Jacob, who was previously involved in New Jersey's Woodcrest AZA.  "I learned to swim fast and I've made some really good friends and found my place.  BBYO provides a general link to our religion and through service, action, social opportunities and brotherhood, it provides a brotherhood and a deep connection."

While here only 16 months, Jacob already you have posted that deep connection to our Yavneh Family, a member of our brother and sisterhood, with the respect and meaningfulness of a lifetime.  "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could," goes the saying.  For Yavneh, we're just glad you got here!

Yavneh in Review

Poetry Day

Yavneh's annual Poetry Day

came once again six months after May.

Sharing their prose and their art

were Music Ensemble's Kim Corbet, the Senior Poetry Class, perennial guests

Will Richey & Alejandro Perez, Jr. (talents of journeymanink.com),

and Gaby Schultz '16 at the start.

Dr. Tim Cloward and his missus, his ultimate better half, have ensured the high quality of our creative writing program, since Ms. Huffaker joined Yavneh's staff.

There was drumming and piano, keyboard magic too -

Flips and handstands while prose rang from Alejandro

who flew.

"Blind," "The Tractor,"

"White Noise," and

"The Power of our Voice,"

in which "my voice has power to speak my truth and share my light,"

gave lead to "When Fire Meets Glacier," in poetry the beauty of words these gifted tellers did write.

"We write for ourselves," said Dr. Cloward, "to communicate and discover,"

Pollman Hall full of students and faculty enthralled they did hover.

"For discovery and true feelings," he shared, "imagination not otherwise found."

Through the preciousness of the word, the heart-soul of poetic sound.

Helping Hands for the Homeless ~

Yavneh Academy's Helping Hands for the Homeless students provided an opportunity for dozens of backpacks to be filled with school supplies for the children of Family Gateway, at the same time raising more than $20,000 to help those same children get a strong educational start.

With more than 750 minors under programs of Family Gateway, the 169 preschool children in Family Gateway's Long-Term Supportive Housing Program will benefit in the coming years through its new Montessori program and the HHH donations will provide school supplies and educational materials, classroom furniture and fixtures, teacher salaries and benefits as well as transportation costs to safely bring the children to school.

"Being Jewish, giving back is what we do, it's an essential part of who we are," said Michelle Friedstadt, who serves, with fellow Yavneh seniors Dalya Romaner and Adam Steinbrecher, as co-President of Helping Hands of the Homeless.  Shanee Abouzaglo and David Rudomin are the organization's Vice-Presidents.  "I joined Helping Hands for the Homeless as a freshman and I've grown even more passionate about the need, and the people we help, each year.  My desire to continue to serve my community will only continue to grow from my start with Helping Hands."

HHH was started in 2010 by Rachel Goodman '13 and Gabby Steinbrecher '12.  The organization's members have in the last four years also supported Genesis Women's Shelter, Jonathan's Place and numerous other agencies, with students serving meals, spending time with children and families, and donations now over $60,000.

"We are so impressed with the responsibility the Yavneh's students have for others and we are happy to support them," said Ceci Katz, who with Ruthy Henkin and their A Taste of the World, along with Benny's Bagels, Café Fino, Mon Ami, and Starbucks donated catering for the event. "We watch the alumni come back and they are leaders in their adult lives and it starts here.  Anything we can do to help them, we are happy to do."

The evening's program was focused on support and education.  The interactive program had stations arranged for packing backpacks, realizing what goes into the planning of a budget, exploring life in area zip codes, and learning about the difficulties resulting from the lack of a proper education.

"It's a mind blowing experience to meet, and to hear the vision of these students," said Cathy Packard, Development Director for Family Gateway.  "They work like the speed of light.  What they can do in one text, takes many adults 40 meetings, with less result!  The compassion and the depth of concern and activism is incredible."

"With the help of the Helping Hands for the Homeless students, who, with passion understand the need for early education," said Ms. Packard, "will help to break the cycle of poverty through a start in our Montessori program."

Remembering JFK~

The Yavneh Student Government presented a thoughtful, somber tribute to the life of President Kennedy, whose assassination in Dallas took place fifty years ago today.

In front of a student body dressed in red, white and blue, our campus leaders streamed news footage from this day in 1963 featuring Walter Cronkite and Dan  Rather of CBS News.  They then read passages highlighting the President's accomplishments and visions - tying the theme of vision and dreaming to this week's Parsha and Joseph's dream interpretations.

In some of our Hebrew classes, the students listened to the music of Shlomo Artzi, as he sings of the tragic November assassinations of JFK, and later Yitzhak Rabin - 32 years apart.

Flags were flown at half-mast on campus, and the students showed maturity and respect in keeping with the appropriate tone of the day.
