From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Whenever I am asked, "What is the most important thing you do as Head of School?" I typically answer, "I bring wonderful students together with great teachers and let the magic unfold."

Here at Yavneh Academy, I am reminded of the simple truth of that statement from early morning to late into the night.  From the time they arrive in the parking lot (my personal favorite time of day), through davening, morning classes, lunch, afternoon classes, Mincha and our rich array of co-curricular activities, Yavneh students are surrounded by thoughtful, dedicated professionals whose love of their careers and the students they teach is palpable, sincere and heartwarming.

At educational and parenting conferences, my colleagues and I often discuss the non-intuitive flight attendant's direction to "secure the adult's oxygen mask before helping the child."  The lesson here: as much as we care about our children, it is equally important for us to take care of our adult selves; in fact, it is a precondition to caring appropriately for our cherished students and children.

On behalf of my colleagues, and all of us at Yavneh,

I wish you all a Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

Ben Calmenson ~ Class of 2014
   "Yavneh is Unique.Friendly. Accommodating."

A former Levine Academy student, Ben transferred to Yavneh, after starting his high school career at Plano's Shepton High School, longing for the Jewish environment he had become accustomed to.  "I've known a lot of my friends at Yavneh since I was two-years-old and I've enjoyed growing with them," said Ben.  "I feel extremely connected with my friends and I'm sure I'm going to keep in touch."

"Beyond my friends and the connection to
my heritage, I also feel that at Yavneh I've been able to connect with all of my teachers and the administrators because of the student-to-faculty ratio," said Ben.  "Yavneh is extremely efficient with its teachings, taking advantage of every minute available.
A Yavneh student learns just as much secular studies as a public school child, if not more."

"Ben , Ben, Ben  - he was awesome in my Physics class," said Lourdes Linzey, who says she is now happy and honored to be his AP Chemistry teacher.  "He is amazing and loved by his peers because of his pleasant personality.  During demonstrations on projectile motion, the class enjoyed watching as you grab the banana from a hunter (me)!

"Ben is a great leader and a positive thinker," added Mrs. Linzey.

Accepted to the University of Kansas and also applying to the universities of Michigan and Texas, as well as Tulane University, and Washington University in St. Louis, finding a university with a strong Jewish community is important.  With hopes of becoming an entrepreneur, we can look forward to his business acumen coming to the forefront.

"Ben is probably the softest spoken student ever elected to preside over the Student Council," said Rabbi Yaakov Tannenbaum, a member of our Judaic Studies faculty.  "He makes his points and carries the day with wit and wisdom instead of bombast and noise.  Ben is effective in debate and reliable in leadership positions because he is focused on the goals and dedicated to well-defined meaningful objectives."

"Ben has a keen intellectual acumen and he is a student that brings a smile to my face whenever I think of our classroom experiences. His infectious positive attitude touches and inspires others," said Rabbi Tannenbaum. "Together, we studied complex topics in Jewish Jurisprudence, we analyzed very subtle legal principles, and tried to make sense of them. It is Ben's unique ability to take the most abstract of concepts and make of them pragmatic and applicable rules. He has the analytical skills to deal with complex concepts and the common sense to extract from them the useful and the practical principles."

A Dallas native, Ben is the son of Diane and Louis and the brother of Nina, who joined Yavneh's Class of '08 on the March of the Living Tour.  A member of Congregation Ohev Shalom and Chabad of Dallas, Ben is also involved with Bnai Brith Youth Organization's Morton Lewis chapter #135.  He has worked at summer camps of Chabad JCC, Levine Academy, and Southern Methodist University, having learned that he enjoys teaching and playing with the youngest in our community.

An amateur magician, from the time he was six until his early teens, performing for events for friends and family as well as his synagogue - Ben still always seems to have "something up his sleeve!"

It's no magic that Ben, who has played on the Bulldog Boys Soccer team is currently a co-President of Yavneh's Student Council and a member of our school's Students4Students.  Banding organizations and academic priorities together is one of the tricks he hopes to master through Student Council this year.

"We have a really great community here at Yavneh and the Council wants to enhance that even moreso," said Ben.  "We want students to be even more open with each other, to have a voice with our faculty, to have dress-up days and pizza nights, and to communicate with our teachers so that schedules don't conflict too intensely.  I think it's important that the students be heard and I'm glad that I have the chance to represent."

Representing his in-Yavneh community now, with a future that is certain to represent far and wide in the future, Ben is sure to go far.

 Shabbat Shalom ~

Yavneh's Shabbatons create some of the most poignant and pleasant Yavneh memories with good food, ruach, learning, and bonding happens in a way that cannot be found only in a classroom.

Last weekend's
Shabbaton focused on the theme of chesed and how even small acts of kindness to the people around you can set into motion acts that can change the world.

Students from all four grades were together as if there was no age gap and on Shabbat day those students continued to bond and get to know each other.  "There is something so powerful about coming together as a community to welcome Shabbat on Friday night," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming, who believes this was one of the best, most ruach filled Shabbatons that she can remember.  "With all of the students wearing their Shabbat best, and singing beautiful tunes for Kabbalat Shabbat (helped along by Rabbi Michel Lomner's beautiful voice), the atmosphere is almost magical."

"The Shabbaton was incredible this year with lots of singing sessions, a meaningful Havdalah, and getting to know each other," said Dalya Romaner, '14, recalling the girls stayed up Friday night talking and laughing into the morning hours. "I've never been able to bond with the rest of the girls in that way and it was really special. Even though this was my last Campus Shabbaton, I'm happy we were able to hang out and bond the way we did."

Yavneh in Review

Guests to Welcome in Shabbat

The SRCampus Beit Midrash was filled to capacity this morning, students and faculty welcoming one guest for the first time, and wishing a "welcome home," to another.

Returning to Yavneh, if only for a morning, was Rabbi Michael Cytrin,Yavneh's Principal of Judaic Studies from 1998 to 2003.  Currently the Educational Director at Yeshivat Lev HaTorah in
Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel, Rabbi Cytrin met with the student body as a whole, and then with prospective gap year participants.

Our morning continued with lessons from

Rabbi Asher Lopatin, the President of

Yeshivat Chovevei Torah in Riverdale, NY.

While from varying voices, both rabbanim shared the importance of listening to others, of being strong and delivering.  Rabbi Cytrin spoke to ensuring our  "outside" goodness of study,
davening, and acts of chesed, while also being certain that on "our inside," to be strong in our neshama, our soul, our essence and intent in the world.

Rabbi Lopatin's message, one of always respecting others observances and commitment to their religion - be it the same or different from our own.  To be pious and learned for oneself, is individual and as our students (and adults) move to new campuses and opportunities, we must never look down at how another is carrying his own Judaism within themselves.

From both of these respected rabbanim, important lessons to hold tight.

Student Council in Session ~

Yavneh's Student Body raised its voice, and was heard.  So begat the return of Yavneh's Student Council, in full swing for the 2013-2014 year.  Intent on listening to the students, and being a conduit between them and the administration, the Council meets regularly to discuss issues that affect the students.

The 2013-2014 Student Council members are Ben Calmenson '14 & Jason Epstein '14 (co-Presidents), Jordan Cope '14 (Vice President), Jacob Feist '14 & David Rudomin '14 (Secretaries), Serina Romick (Treasurer), Dania Tanur '14 (Presidents' Appointee), Lauren Siegel and Sam Kleinman (Senior Class Representatives), Sophie Lynn and Grant Prengler (Junior Class Representatives), Amitai Abouzaglo and Risa Mond (Sophomore Class Representatives), Zach Epstein and Eliana Schuller-Podbilewicz (Freshman Class Representatives).

"I wanted to be part of helping Yavneh be an even better school, for the students," said Ben.  "Being a part of Student Council means being a part of reestablishing something really meaningful.  We have a great group of hard-working students representing, and a great group to represent and I'm excited about what we'll do this year."

New to Yavneh, care of the Council's efforts, is a suggestion box that resides outside the school's office.  Jordan Cope is the administrator of the suggestion box and says that students are leaving messages of what matters to them.  First on the list, was the addition of two new microwaves and a new toaster for the Student Lounge.

"The suggestion box was an idea I promised during my election speech and I think it was an important step to connecting to the student body," said Jordan.  "I took a post box that I found at home and, with the kind help of LuAnn Pitlik and Yavneh's maintenancemen, Bobby Morris and Arlan Kronbeck, we arranged to have the box installed on a pedestal."

"I noticed that there were little things around the school that could be improved, they just hadn't been addressed.  While we attend a private school where most students have close relationships with the administration, some have issues that they feel more comfortable expressing to the students," said Jason.  "We will listen to the student body's concerns and work to the best of our abilities to address them. Student Council looks forward to enhancing the 'Yavneh experience' for everyone."

The Israel Experience - the year of a lifetime ~

As Abraham searched for a location to bury his beloved Sarah, it was important to him to buy the land, to have ownership, to be connected.   In purchasing the cave  where his love would spend her eternity, Abraham solidified his relationship, and that of his future generations with Israel.

"When it comes to our relationship with Israel, there can't be anything ambiguous," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming, as she introduced Yavneh Juniors and Seniors, and their parents, to a myriad of Israel Gap Year opportunities.  "The ownership we have must be clear and strong, true and everlasting, and in the eight years I've been working with our students, I can't recall one who spent the year there, who came back anything less than with ties tied tight!"

"There are numerous studies, and the recommendation of Harvard University to its accepted students as well, to the benefits of students taking a year between high school and traditional university," said Mrs. Schrager, recommending visiting

"The Gap Year Advantage" for those who wish to learn more. "A gap year in Israel is so much more than a vacation, it's living, touring, learning and growing, and the whole of the chance to do so is greater than any of the parts."

Mrs. Schrager discussed kinds of programs, the process of application, and the financial obligation - as well as scholarship and grant opportunities, available.

GAP YEAR OPPORTUNITIES

  • Yeshivot & Seminaries(varies from intense traditional all day learning to others with travel and chesed projects)
  • Intership Programs (numerous professional-related internships including at the Knesset, media-related, others)
  • "Programs"

Aardvark Israel, Bnei Akiva, Kivunim/New Directions, Young Judaea Year Course, and numerous university options.  Some university programs allow travel and volunteer options, and others are fulltime "for credit" academic programs.

FINANCIAL Q&A (click here for more information)

  • Programs vary, some are one semester, some are a full year.  Cost can vary from approximately $20,000 to $50,000/year, however both merit and need-based scholarships are available and "no one should not apply due to financial concerns," said Mrs. Schrager.  "We've never had a student stay back for financial reasons."

"It's impossible not to find the right program for each student who wants to go," said Mrs. Schrager, who recommended students and parents review the cost, the intensity of learning, the amount of travel involved, and the size of individual opportunities when making their decision.  "It's important to make the decision to go, and have that be your priority - and we can find the right program, rather than having this be a 'fallback' second choice."

Yavneh hosts guests from many opportunities, always posted in advance, so that students (and parents if they wish) can meet and greet, to find out more specific details.

"For students to be able to learn and grow and find themselves, in the land where Abraham insured his own ties, to learn in the places of all that they've learned during their time at Yavneh, is a chance that will never happen again," said Mrs. Schrager.  "No other experience can possibly duplicate an Israel Gap Year."

Celebrating and $upporting Yavneh's Arts ~

Yavneh's own artists-in-residence, faculty and students stood up to support our Theatre & Visual Arts, Creative Writing,  and Music Ensemble programs by providing works of beauty and meaning to our 1st Annual Yavneh Arts Benefit night.  Dr. Tim Cloward and Lisa Huffaker read of their own works, also performing with Music Ensemble director, Kim Corbet.  A multi-media presentation, featuring the work of Monica Ribald, and the heart she delivers on a canvas, accompanied a silent auction of literary and visual arts, as well as tickets to cultural events in Dallas.

"Yavneh has a great tradition of teaching the arts and that tradition gets stronger every year," said Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy, who too got in the spirit, performing an original "ditty," of prose and song.  "The example that our faculty sets for our student body is a strong one, rich with creative depth and commitment."

"We are the 'little art department that can,'" said Dr. Tim Cloward, who oversees all arts programming.  "We have incredibly talented professionals from throughout the community who bring their all to our kids, and it rubs off.

"Anything you do with meaning, brings meaning to the world," said Ms. Huffaker. "I'm so glad to be a part of that meaning which the students and support team at Yavneh bring to our world."

Anyone interested in making a donation or purchasing any of the works still available, should email tcloward@yavnehdallas.org
