From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

One of the challenges our students face when applying to colleges is the desire to maintain

their sense of humility, which our tradition values and nurtures (recall the Prophet Micah's charge to walk humbly with one's

G-d), and the need to trumpet their personal accomplishments in university applications, essays and interviews (in short, to brag).

Likewise, as Head of School, I tend to focus on those qualities of Yavneh Academy - our rich college-preparatory education, our robust religious life, our commitment to student health - that is of a less competitive nature, sometimes at the risk of not bragging enough.

Well this week, I just can't hold back:

In our very first year back as members of TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools), which we rejoined in part for student opportunities to win individual honors and compete in team playoffs, Jason Epstein '14 was chosen All-District Soccer "Newcomer of the Year," while our Girls Varsity Volleyball Team won an exciting single-elimination match and is going to the state playoffs in two weeks!!

And on the faculty front, our very own Dr. Tim Cloward is quoted in this week's Wall Street Journal article about Dallas' 50th anniversary commemoration of the Kennedy Assassination, in which he says, "The city wants to downplay and deflect the assassination and the events surrounding it."  To Dr. Cloward, who is actively working on a book that examines hundreds of literary responses to "the city that killed Kennedy," we say: We are proud of you too!!

So, please forgive my brief personal lapse in institutional humility, and on behalf of our students, teachers and staff, we wish you a Shabbat Shalom - and Go Bulldogs!

Dr. P.

Ella Baum ~ Class of 2014
      "Yavneh is Friendly.  Close.  Accepting."

"I like that Yavneh feels like a family," said Ella, who, after attending Temple

Emanu-El's preschool, and public schools in Plano, was looking for a smaller, more personal school. "I have close friends and lots of casual friendships.  It's the people who are the best part of Yavneh."

Believing that "success requires good planning," Ella says that the dual-curriculum works because Yavneh's teachers plan around the shorter classes, they assign homework to compensate for the schedule, and the Judaic department supports students coming in from a public school background.  "I think they do a good job of

helping students who come in with less of a Hebrew and Judaic studies background," she said.  "I enjoy the philosophical and spiritual of Judaism coming together.  It makes it all much easier to understand."

Applying to Beloit, Earlham, and Oberlin colleges in Wisconsin and Ohio, Ella's goal is to attend a small liberal arts school where she wants to study neuroscientific research.  Following in her father's scientific footsteps, she appreciates the encouragement that both of her parents have provided. A 2012 participant in the Duke TIP program, where she studied neuroscience at the Duke West campus, a kickstart toward her future, this year, Ella spent the summer at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she worked in a medical lab, again pushing herself toward her dream.

A Boston-baby who moved to Dallas in her infancy, Ella is the daughter of Joy Allington-Baum and  Howard Baum and sister to Evan.  She's a member of Temple Emanu-El, where she's been a madrecha in the religious school, an assistant teacher of Hebrew and Judaic studies to fifth grade students.  "It's fun to watch kids learn and to see them wanting to understand," said Ella.  "At Yavneh I have learned how to better understand the parsha of the week and I like teaching chumash to my kids."

"I have taught many hard working and dedicated students in my time at Yavneh, but Ella will always stand out," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "Not just is she extremely diligent in her studies, and she has such an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, but Ella has such a sense of joy and happiness in her studies."

"When Ella understands a difficult concept or learns a new idea you can see her face light up with exuberance and delight," said Rabbi Tannenbaum "Jr."  "I know that because of this personal satisfaction, that her learning brings her, she will never cease learning and attain veritable storehouse of knowledge in the upcoming years."

Ella who enjoyed attending the Dallas Zoo as a camper, has matured into the role of Junior Camp Counselor, teaching toddlers to fifth graders in the "zoo camp" during winter and summer vacations.

A member of Yavneh's Table Tennis club, and the Music Ensemble for which she's played the trumpet and the tambourine, for four years, says   "I enjoy the freedom that we are given and the chance to really stretch my limits as a musician."  A spirited dancer and participant each year in Yavneh's Color Wars, the memories she's made on campus she knows she'll carry into her future.

"Ella is great. She's always had the ability to see what's going on and she's now using her talents in a very professional way," said Kim Corbet, Director of Yavneh's Music program. She can get to the heart of a piece of music and influence others with her perception and she hasmost definitely emerged as a leader of our music program."

Ella, you may be one to toot your own trumpet, but never your own horn - indeed you leave Yavneh on the highest of notes.

All the Bulldog News That is Fit to Print ~~

Yavneh's The Bulldog Print made its 2013-2014 debut this morning, the first issue with Rachael Abrams '07 as adviser.  You can click here to read the issue's news and features.

"I loved journalism when I was a student and I'm loving being the teacher.  This really has been a dream of mine and when the chance came up - I just couldn't let it pass," said Ms. Abrams, for whom Journalism was a key during her time as a Yavneh student.  "The kids enthusiasm is contagious, and it's refreshing to see such talent, passion and drive."

Members of the 2013-2014 The Bulldog Print first issue staff are Jason Epstein '14 and Austin Jacoby '15 (Editors-in-Chief), Hannah Delagi '14 (Managing Editor), Hanna Liebermann  '14 (Copy Editor), Haley Chestler '15 (Layout Editor), Scott Lacritz '15 (Graphics Editor), Adam Steinbrecher '14 (Advertising Editor), Erin Smith '14 (Photo Editor), Amitai Abouzaglo '16 and Mitchell Levinson '16 (News Editors), Shanee Abouzaglo '14 (Features Editor), Elimelekh Perl '16 (Perspectives Editor), David Rudomin '14 (Sports Editor), Niv Avneri '14 (Entertainment Editor), Taylor Blue '15 (Photographer), and Avi Baynash '16, Zach Epstein '17, Zach Harmon '14, Elliott Jacobson '16, Alexandra Lavi '15, Risa Mond '16, Ethan Pearson '15, Grant Prengler '15, Daniel Toobian '16, Erin Wernick '15, Sammy Weyser '16, and Benji Zoller '16 (Reporters).

Ms. Abrams, who was chosen one of the "Nicest Classmates" in 2006, would likely receive that honor again if voted by today's student body.  In her own Etone Senior Feature, Ms. Abrams had a future that included becoming a journalist, and eventually an editor. I'd love to be a part of a magazine like 'D Magazine," she said at the time. "I like writing features and getting to know about people."

Six years later, memories serve well and Ms. Abrams can identify with the busy schedule of our students.  While a Yavneh student, in addition to writing for the paper, she served on Mock Trial, she was a co-founder of the Uniting Students of Dallas club, and she was a member of Yavneh's Yoga Club and Tennis Team.

"The kids' creativity is really incredible and the layouts and design minds that they have are so much fun to work with," said Ms. Abrams, a 2011 graduate of the University of Texas, with a BA in Rhetoric and Writing, who then attended the Natural Gourmet Institute in New York City.   Ms. Abrams served an internship at Saveur Magazine and in the test kitchen at
Bon Appétit Magazine, before returning to Dallas last year, working at PaperCity Magazine and as a freelance writer at
Culture Map Dallas where she previously served as Associate Editor.   "With the great staff on board and 11 students in my Intro to Journalism class, who will be staffing with us as the year goes on, I know it's going to be a great year."

Rabbi Gavriel Friedman

Rabbi Gavriel "Rav Gav" Friedman taught, entertained, spoke with, sang to, and made laugh Yavneh's student body and faculty on Thursday.

The subject was the importance of self-esteem but the greater lesson was the learning of Torah with joy, with smiles, and comedy - all the way offering a deep message of respect for oneself, and those we love.

Introduced to the Dallas Jewish Community by YavnehMom Kim Zoller,
after sharing his story with Yavneh's students and faculty, he addressed
audiences at three other schools and at the Aaron Family JCC.  "Rabbi Friedman has not only such an important message about how we think about being in our
day-today lives, but the bigger picture of what life is about, and how we bring Hashem into our lives," said Kim Zoller, whose enthusiasm over Rabbi Friedman
is contagious.

The two met when Ms. Zoller participated in the 2010 Jewish Women's Renaissance Project tour to Israel, and were reunited when she chaperoned this summer's JWRP tour.  "He's funny - and speaks in a most accessible way with an energy like no one I've ever heard.  Rabbi Friedman is so authentic, genuine, and inspiring and that's when he's one-on-one, and when he's speaking to an audience."

Rabbi Gavriel Friedman has spent the last decade studying and teaching in various Yeshivot in Jerusalem. At  Aish HaTorah Jerusalem, Rabbi Friedman's lectures include the Discovery Seminar, Jerusalem Fellowships, Executive Learning Center, and more.

 Open House!

Yavneh Academy opened its arms with an Open House on Tuesday night, welcoming more than 35 prospective families to the Schultz Rosenberg Campus.

Our guests were welcomed by Head of School Dr. David Portnoy, Rabbi Michael Friedman who delivered a beautiful dvar Torah, alumna Michele Cheirif Raphael '04, and Jay Kleinman, President of the Board of Directors.

"The word mezuzah refers to the ritual fixtures we place on our doors in our homes and places of dwelling and this commandment has many beautiful and meaningful lessons for our lives," shared Rabbi Friedman.  "Firstly, mezuzah boxes come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and styles.  Despite these external differences, each mezuzah box contains a parchment inside with writings from our Holy Torah.  Just as

we, human beings, possess different externalities, each of us has an internal neshama, a godly soul.  Secondly, some sages of our tradition taught that the mezuzah should be affixed horizontally on the doorpost, and others taught that it should be affixed vertically.  Many of us (of Ashkenazi descent) traditionally hang the mezuzah on a diagonal slant in order to represent the peace and unity of both schools of thought.  Finally, the mezuzah reminds us to sift out negative and destructive influences and filter in positive and constructive forces as they enter our homes, offices, and other places of dwelling.  It reminds us to live our lives in accordance with godliness, integrity, virtue, and spirituality."

"With all of our varied externalities, we are all connected as part of the Yavneh family, each of us containing a godly soul within," said Rabbi Friedman, noting that, like the mezuzah coverings of different shapes and sizes, our student population includes those from all different backgrounds, denominations, and styles.  "Just as the mezuzah hangs diagonally on our doors, we promote the values of peace and unity, and engender an atmosphere of compromise and understanding.  Finally, like the mezuzah's hanging reminder, Yavneh helps center our lives around Torah values - instilling virtue, morality, and integrity in the hearts and minds of our young men and young women."

Director of Development and Admissions Mimi Zimmerman, supported by Christy Bonds and LuAnn Pitlik, along with Dr. Portnoy, coordinated an evening to introduce prospective students and parents to our academics, the beauty of the SRCampus, and to the sensibility that is the Yavneh Family.

Bonnie Atkins, Dr. Tim Cloward, Ari Dembo, Dr. Steven Goldfine, Naomi Schrager, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, and Coach David Zimmerman provided introductions to the curriculum, extracurricular and athletic activities available on campus.

Many thanks to Yavneh students Hadas Cohen, Zach Epstein, Alexandra Lavi, Jonathan Nurko, Jonathan Ochstein, Grant Prengler, Dalya Romaner, and Adam Steinbrecher, and Yavneh parents Gianina Abouzaglo Dia Epstein, Dinora Friedstadt, Debbie Katz, Avi Mitzner, Shani Romick, and Sheryl Wernick for their assistance in guiding our guests, representing Yavneh and its very best.

Rabbi Friedman personified all that Yavneh is as he concluded, "our school logo represents the highest pursuit of academic and intellectual rigor as embodied by the atom, with a highlighted Jewish Star on the inside signifying  that our Jewish values are the core and lie at the epicenter of our endeavors and successes.  As the only co-ed Jewish high school in Dallas, our students proudly view themselves as representatives of the next generation of Jewish leaders, and ambassadors to our community at large."

We hope those who had the chance to visit Yavneh, potential members
of the Class of 2018, will join that ambassadorship come next fall.

The Elisa Project

On Wednesday, October 16, Yavneh freshmen

engaged in a morning of health-related educational

programming.  Our ninth graders participated in two sessions, one focusing on nutrition and eating, the other on identity and personal effectiveness.

First, the students engaged in a powerful program sponsored by The Elisa Project, a Dallas-based institute specializing in eating disorders, self-image and healthy lifestyles.  Amy Valle,

Program Coordinator for the project, presenting

information and images dealing with nutrition,

eating habits and guidelines for personal wellness.

In the second program, JFS (Jewish Family Services) educational specialist

Joanna Kirschbaum led the freshmen in discussions concerning identity,

self-esteem and goal-setting, culminating in each student writing a letter to his or her

"future self," which Dr. Portnoy will return to the students when they are in the twelfth grade.

All in all, it was a positive experience, an opportunity for students to learn things

not otherwise covered in the curriculum, and time for the freshmen to get to know one another better as the class continues to develop its identity as the youngest grade this year at Yavneh.
