OCTOBER 11,  2013

From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

It is my pleasure to report how very impressed I was with our 9th graders today, as seven of them campaigned and ran against one another for Student Government Representative.  This is an exceptional group of students: mature, thoughtful, respectful and supportive of one another. We expect great things from them over their next four years at Yavneh!

At the other end of our student spectrum, our 12th graders are in the thick of the college admissions process, with many burning the proverbial candle at both ends.  As an

experiment, I guided our seniors through a

nap-time/relaxation exercise this week, and we discussed the importance of rest, sleep and

de-stressing as a critical part of overall wellness.

I am so proud of all the young people we are privileged to call Yavneh students, from our youngest to the oldest, and the personal values and interpersonal relationships they embody and practice every day.  The faculty and I are grateful for the positive modeling their parents, grandparents and other family and friends provide at home, as we commit - in the family/school partnership - to supporting their middot (personal qualities, character) and briut (health).

Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh!

Dr. P.

PSAT Testing ~

On Wednesday, October 16, sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT.  Students will need to be in the assigned classrooms by 8:50a.m. with testing starting promptly at 9:00a.m. This is to ensure that the test is completed in time for regularly scheduled lunch.

Students will need to bring #2 sharpened pencils into the test site along with a calculator that is being used for math and science classes. It is wise to replace the batteries to the calculator prior to coming to school as a safeguard. Please note mechanical pencils are not allowed. All other materials, including cell phones and other portable electronic devices, are prohibited in the testing room.

Students will want to do their best as this test for juniors provides entry into National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions as well as other scholarship and recognition programs such as the National Hispanic Recognition Program. On average, those students who take the PSAT/MNSQT score 136 points higher on the SAT than those who do not.  The PSAT/MNSQT measures the same skills and have the same format, directions and question types.

Again this year, students will be asked to write in cursive a certification statement within three lines on the answer sheet.  This has caused panic to many who have not written in cursive. Printing is not acceptable. It is advised that your student practice writing before the test on Wednesday.  The statement is:

I hereby agree to the conditions set forth in the test regulations and certify that I am the person whose name, address and signature appear on this answer sheet.

In addition, the student will need to sign his/her name, print his/her name and date the certification statement.  Afternoon classes will resume as usual.

Special Programming for 9th grade students:

While sophomore and junior students are taking the PSAT, freshmen will report to the library for special programming beginning at 9am.

Senior Class Photo Shoot:

Seniors will meet during the PSAT testing, at the announced location, for the  class photo shoot.

The community is invited, on October 20, at 7pm, to share in an evening to support the Arts Department of Yavneh Academy.

The evening will feature an auction including published works; Icarus at the Airport by Dr. Tim Cloward, Small Worldby Lisa Huffaker, and Polly's Pipers by Monica Ribald, as well as tickets to Dallas-area cultural events including the Dallas Opera, the Kitchen Dog Theater, Theatre Three and Wordspace.

Artwork by students and current and former faculty members Rachael Abrams '05 and Sandy Hall-Chiles will also be available.

Kim Corbet, Dr. Tim Cloward, Michael Federico, Lisa Huffaker, and Monica Ribald, all respected professionals

in varied cultural programs in addition to their association as

Yavneh Faculty members, will perform during the evening.

The Yavneh Arts Benefit will be held in Pollman Hall of the Schultz Rosenberg Campus  at 12324 Merit Drive in Dallas, 75251.  Admission is $5.

Sarah Barnett ~ Class of 2014
      "Yavneh is... Relaxed.  Fun.  Jewish."

"I wanted to further my Jewish identity and at Yavneh, I can further my knowledge of Judaism on a daily basis with classes that are fun, teachers who are awesome, and great friends (who are hilarious), said the ever smiling - or making others do so - Sarah.  "When you give a student an opportunity to further their learning of Judaism, through classes like Hebrew, Chumash, Oral Law, JTL, and Jewish History, I think that students have a better understanding and appreciation and I think that's why we are so successful."

Applying to colleges now, Sarah is still considering a gap year to study in Israel, and hoping to spend a junior year abroad, studying in Australia, Croatia, or Japan.  Known for her great sense of humor, Sarah would like to use the gift to become a comedic script writer, perhaps a writer for Saturday Night Live, or - possibly an English teacher (she notes that is not a knock to English teachers, her interest in the subject "no joking matter).

"Talking to Sarah always brightens up my day," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward.  "She has a memorable personality, and wonderful sense of humor - simply put, she is a character!  Sarah combines her endearing nature with a willingness to work hard to succeed, and she is beloved and respected by everybody on campus."

A member of the Yavneh Lady Bulldog Volleyball and Basketball teams, Sarah has also been involved in Helping Hands for the Homeless, Points for Peace Basketball, Students Against Terrorism, and Students4Students.

"Sarah is sweet and playful, very kind and generous. You know you can count on her when you are in need," said Art teacher, Monica Ribald.  "She is happy and loves to paint, really she just loved anything we did."

Born in North Carolina, but a Dallasite from the time she was a toddler, Sarah previously attended Levine Academy.  The daughter of Michele and Brian, and sister to Brittany '11 and Rachel, Sarah belongs to Chabad of Plano/Collin County.  She is a member of BBYO's Blum chapter, Bnei Akiva, and DAFTY, Dallas Area Federation of Temple Youth.  "I love being a part of youth groups that connect me with others who share my beliefs," said Sarah.  Summertime breaks have Sarah collecting clothing and canned goods to donate to local shelters and traveling with her family.

"We sometimes say that a student is 'one in a million'. For Sarah, I think we could safely expand to 'one in a billion'," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming.  "She is quirky and off beat and makes her presence known wherever she is."

Last May, when a group of Yavneh students drove to Oklahoma to help in the clean-up efforts after the tornado, Mrs. Schrager says she was privileged to have Sarah ride in her car where she saw a very different side of Sarah.  While on the way there Sarah was excited and her usual chatty self, and on the return trip she was much more reflective and wanted to talk about what she had seen and think about ways to continue in aiding the relief effort.

"I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to teach Sarah for several years and get to know her in several different contexts," said Mrs. Schrager.  "She enjoys thinking about things deeply and learning new ideas and she has grown to be very passionate about her Judaism, eager to continue learning more."

BBYO On-Campus!

It was "welcome home" and "nice to meet you" to our guests of BBYO International last week as Mika Stein '13, the current International

President, returned to campus to introduce Yavneh to Anita Bormaster, Director of BBYO Connect and Teen Leadership, Ian Kandel, Director of AZA, BBG, the Movement, and Natalie Spring, Director of BBYO's Campaigns and Initiatives.

"We were in Dallas meeting with organizations for possible partnership in the February, 2014 International Convention.  We are excited to help Dallas own the experience as host city, and I was very proud
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Grant Prengler '15, Natalie Spring, Anita Bormaster, Mika Stein '13, Ian Kandel, Gary Levine '14, and Adam Steinbrecher '14

to show the team around Yavneh," said Mika who since August, has traveled to Georgia, New York, Virginia, and South Carolina, working with these BBYO leaders in the regions and councils to improve their programming and inspire their leadership.

Less than a week after registration opened  for the February convention, almost 2000 teens from

around the world have already registered to participate.

"Last year's IC attendance and magnitude proved to be
one of the largest gatherings of the Global Jewish community in the world,"
said Gary Levine '14, BBYO's current International
Vice-President of Judaic Programming."With numbers up by
thirty percent we anticipate IC 2014 in Dallas to be bigger and better than ever."

Mitzvah Makers ~

If the shoe (doesn't) fit ...

Juniors Hadas Cohen, Scott Lacritz, and Erin Wernick are once again sponsoring a tennis shoe drive to support Peace Direct, an organization that helps prevent genocide around the world.

Last spring, the students collected 68 pounds of shoes, to United Southern Waste Material Company which paid $5/pound.    United Southern Waste Material Company distributes the shoes around the world to those in need.

The reality - Yavneh's students and participants are sharing in two mitzvahs, through one act of kindness.

Donations of tennis shoes (new or used but in good condition) of all sizes, and for males and females, are welcome.   The collection box is posted in the Student Lounge .
