From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

We are back in full swing, finally in the period known as "after the holidays." And are our Yavneh students ever busy! One recent afternoon at 5:30pm, after a full day of classes, I witnessed the following all within a few yards of one another:

  • Our new Robotics Club was experimenting with remote-control devices and computer programs under the watchful eye of Ms. Linzey, who launched the initiative over the summer
  • Our music ensemble was improvising on some jazz piano arrangements under the direction of professional musician, conductor and Yavneh music teacher Mr. Corbet
  • Our award-winning Bulldog Print journalism staff was collaborating on its upcoming issue under the guidance of Ms. Abrams '07 - who recently returned to Yavneh after several years working as a professional journalist and writer

And that was just one afternoon, on one hallway, while various athletic teams and other groups fanned out across the city for games, practices, after-school jobs, community service and study sessions.

If there is one simple rule of education and parenting that I have come to believe, it is this: Keep kids busy ... doing healthy activities ... and good things will follow!

Speaking of health, please do all that you can to keep our students healthy - eating well, exercising, and sleeping.  There is a lot of sickness going around, and we don't want them getting sick and missing school!

Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh!

Dr. P.

       YOU make the difference!
Niv Avneri ~ Class of 2014
      "Yavneh is...Memorable. Welcoming. Family."

"I could spend hours talking about why Yavneh is the most amazing place; ask any of my friends and they will all tell you I love Yavneh and never want to leave!," said Niv, who transferred to Yavneh as a sophomore from J.J. Pearce High School.  "I came mainly for the Jewish education, but I ended up getting even more out of it.  I love the student-teacher connection and how comfortable I feel here - it truly is my second home."

"The best part about Yavneh is the comfort and easygoing personality of the way things flow," said the  Dallas native who moved to Israel at the age of 10, for four years, before returning. "Yavneh is home to the most incredible people.  While we are all Jewish, there is still a lot of diversity.   I can honestly say that I've gotten to know every person in my grade and because we go to such a small school, I have had the time to get to know people I might not have. My close group of friends means the world to me and I love going to school every morning because I know I will be with the people I love all day."

"Niv is an intensely thoughtful and insightful student. She asks penetrating questions in class and works hard to understand and digest the answers," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming.  "She does not readily agree with everything presented to her, instead she respectfully raises challenging counter points and engages in high level conversation."

"The more time I've spent at Yavneh, the more I've realized how important Judaic Studies are," said Niv.  "We do have more classes to worry about than students at other schools, but the dual curriculum just works. The lessons and general knowledge I've learned in those classes will stick with me after I graduate."

Niv is the daughter of Yael and Yoram, and the sister to brothers Gal and Tal, and to sister Matan and her husband Kfir.  One of her favorite roles in life - auntie to little Lavi.  A member of Young Israel, and a summertime JCC Camp Chai Counselor, she is involved with BBYO's Sally Blum chapter, for which she served as President, VP of Communications, and MIT Mom, overseeing recruitment and retention.  Extending her connection to BBYO, Niv spent part of the summer, volunteering and traveling with the organization's IMPACT: Boston program, where she taught English to adult refugees from Haiti, Eritrea, and Iraq and volunteered in the Jewish vocational services offices.

Here at home, a Lady Bulldogs Volleyball player, Niv, interested in a career in communications or psychology, is a former reporter for Yavneh's student newspaper, The Bulldog Print, now the paper's Entertainment Editor.  A member of Students4Students, through which she volunteers in the tutoring program at Hamilton Park Elementary School, Niv says it's "work, but fun," appreciating the orderly, but not too structured program which she feels allows she and her peers to work with the children, but still have room to make the learning fun.

"Niv is extremely hard working and completes every homework assignment with maximum diligence," said Nicole Friedman, member of the Math Faculty.  "She is very conscientious and never afraid to ask a question when she is confused. She pushes herself to the maximum and is determined to succeed, even when she may initially struggle with the mathematical content."

"Aside from her academic achievement, Niv is mature beyond her years and always enters the classroom with a bright smile and word of appreciation," said Mrs. Friedman, whose class Niv joined as a sophomore.  "Although new students often struggle to find their footing, Niv made a seamless transition, immediately surrounded by friends. She is the sweetest student to both teachers and peers and everyone is naturally drawn to her friendly personality."

"Niv is respected by peers and teachers alike as a loyal and honest young woman," said Mrs. Schrager.  "She has a keen sense of right and wrong and holding herself to a very high standard when it comes to issues of ethics and morality. Niv cares deeply for others and is often the first to volunteer when help is needed. She also has a fantastic sense of humor and is fun to be around. Each class that she is a part of is truly better for her being there."

National Merit Honors!

Kol Hakavod to Yavneh seniors Shanee Abouzaglo,
Lexi Riche,
Jason Epstein,
Adam Steinbrecher, and Adam Schor on receipt of honors from the College Board.

Jason, Lexi, Adam, and Adam have been named as Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program and Shanee was named a National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their academic promise, our Yavneh seniors placing among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million who entered the competition by taking the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT.

"We are extremely proud of these students for this singular accomplishment," said Dr. David Portnoy, Yavneh's Head of School.  "Yavneh Academy enjoys a proud tradition of academic excellence, and these outstanding students are worthy inheritors of that tradition."

Yavneh Juniors Supporting JFS!

Yavneh's Class of 2015 recently participated in Jewish Family Services' Food Pantry Outreach Program, touring the Food Pantry, helping to stock its shelves, and learning about the process, and the people it touches.

Students broke into groups, creating "families" that might mirror those who take advantage of the services at JFS.   There were families with children young and old, some spoke of an abusive parent with another working three jobs.  The students pictured young men and women not much older than themselves, forgoing the college educations they are preparing for, because there are no funds.

"The challenges aren't always visible and neither is the need," explained longtime JFS Food Pantry Volunteer, Eileen Franklin.  "It isn't easy for clients to come here and we never want someone to feel 'less than,' another."

Echoing those sentiments was JFS Volunteer and Board Member Jeri Lyn Sebert who took the group of students on a tour of the Food Pantry, explaining the kinds of foods that can be shared  and the policies of the Food Pantry. "JFS is dedicated to retaining the dignity of our clients and to providing a positive experience for everyone," she said.  "We can't fix it all, but we can let them all know that we care."

Students separated boxes and bags of food that had been delivered to JFS, much of it by synagogues whose members had made donations during the High Holy Days.  A large donation was made by Gilian and Steve Baron and their daughters Allie and Lauren, longtime JFS volunteers who had collected the many bags and boxes of food our students separated and stacked to the Food Pantry's shelves, at their annual Break Fast after Yom Kippur. While Lauren doesn't attend Yavneh, she was thrilled to hear that many of her BBYO friends were in Yavneh's support crew, and was impressed that part of the school day was dedicated to good deed.

"It is customary during Chol Hamoed to do mitzvot, beyond the norm, to elevate the joy we feel during the holiday," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "This week, we fill ourselves with happiness and of course caring for others, and doing good for others, can only enhance how a person feels."

Out and About Our Community ~

Wednesday, October 9, at 7pm, Yavneh's own Assistant Principal. teacher, and champion of the arts,  Dr. Tim Cloward, will be the featured speaker at the Dallas Institute of Culture and Humanities.

Dr. Cloward will speak about "The City that Killed Kennedy, the Literary History of Dallas and the Assassination."
A reception will precede the program, beginning at 6:30pm.

This WordSpace program, presented in partnership with Dallas Institute of Culture and Humanities and Southwest Review, chronicles what Dallas-area writers have written about the November 22, 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy.  From the city's original attempts to deal with the guilt, self-loathing and ostracism that came with its christening as "The City of Hate," to its current attempts to memorialize the event at its 50th anniversary, Dallas has produced an extensive literature that mirrors in fascinating ways the larger national debate on the real meaning of the JFK assassination.

Dr. Cloward, author of the upcoming book The City that Killed Kennedy: A Cultural History of Dallas and the Assassination (Winner of the 2013 Mayborn Conference Book Manuscript Award), will have an essay he's authored, "Conspiracy-A-Go-Go," an excerpted chapter of his book, published in this Fall's issue of the Southwest Review.
