From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Many of my family's sweetest Jewish memories involve the holiday of Sukkot.  From our yearly construction of the three-sided deck-topping awning-wrapped steel-pipe-framed dwelling (how does the skhach-supporting trellis lay, again?), to hanging the Rosh Hashanah cards and kids' decorations, to the classic-but-timeless plastic-yellow-perfectly-ripened "banana phone" in the northwest corner of our sukkah, it was a holiday filled with leisurely meals among lifetime friends,  and valiant efforts to combat a variety of outdoor bees and other flying objects.

This week at Yavneh saw some unseasonably cool Dallas weather and our students' exposure to the natural beauty of White Rock Lake and various downtown destinations, connecting our largely suburban population with many cultural, religious, artistic and historical features of our great city.

As we ready ourselves for Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we wish you and yours a Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh!

Yavneh in Review

Students4Students Pancake Night in the Sukkah

Yavneh's Students4Students organization hosted students, teachers, and their families in the SR Campus Sukkah on Monday night - welcoming in our neighbors, and making them part of the extended Yavneh Family.

"We are so excited to have the students and families here to share in the Sukkah," said Lauren Siegel '14, who leads the program for her S4S peers.  "After spending so much time in their classrooms, it was nice to show them where we study, where we go to school."

Our guests, from Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet in Richardson, are students that Yavneh's Students4Students Mentor program.  Our students read with the children, assist in their classroom assignments, and give the teachers time to review students' work, while the Yavneh Mentors keep the classrooms running.  The mentors and teachers at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet call the students, "friends," allowing a warm and nurturing environment.

"I like how I learn to read and how 'Miss Haley' (Chestler '15) tells me how many minutes I have left for an assignment," said Mallory Palacioz who is in the first grade.

"I like having big kids teach us because they know a lot more than us.  It's fun to have new people who come in to our classes and be our friends."

"I'm so proud of these kids, the best of Yavneh will always be a part of me," said Veronica Thomas, a former faculty member who helped the students coordinate the event and who, with the help of students, spent many hours in the Yavneh kitchen prepping the pancake bar with an array of toppings.  "I connected the kids to Hamilton Park and I'm so glad to see the relationships growing and the learning that is happening for the little ones as well as for our own students.  I know they all get a lot out of the program."

Musing the Museums and
Shaking it at the Intown Chabad Sukkah

The spirit of the holidays was felt throughout Dallas earlier this
week as students made their way to White Rock Lake, to Dallas museums, and to lunch at the Intown Chabad.  From the Old Red Courthouse to the
Sixth Floor Museum and beyond, students and faculty members took their learning, their ruach, and their lulavs near and far.

"These trips allow our kids to grow - personally, and together, as they bond outside the classroom," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum.  "We take a bit of a break from the classroom - but they have the chance to be thinking, and learning, while they are laughing, sharing, and being together."

Rabbi Moshe Greene (father of Yavneh faculty  member Devora Lomner) shared learning with our students at the lake - providing lessons on never settling for mediocrity.  White Rock Lake set the scene for discussions of how the Talmud teaches us of the role of water in our lives - how all of the species related to the holiday of Sukkot need water to survive, while providing a relaxing backdrop.

At the Intown Chabad,
Rabbi Zvi Drizin welcomed the students into the sukkah for a pizza lunch, a singalong, and for what has become an annual event of memory-making.

"We have a great relationship with Yavneh's students for many years and many come back
to us to share in our learning and
programs once they graduate college," said Rabbi Drizin.
"This is a time for z'man simchateinu, the time of our happiness and that can only be enhanced by sharing together.  It's great to see some students return,
and to get to meet the new kids."

Yavneh's Sukkah - A Site for Simcha Smiles

As the holiday of Sukkot comes to a close, and students readied for Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, they came together for a morning of davening, of closing out the High Holy Days with last prayers of the season.  Students and faculty beat the aravah
the willow branches, they marched the hakafot around the Beit Midrash, and together enjoyed breakfast and lunch in the SR Campus Sukkah.

"Any opportunity to be together to pray and to prepare to welcome in the holidays, is a great occasion," said
Dr. David Portnoy, Head of School. "Having lunch together - and watching the kids all having a great time is really exciting."
