From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

The days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot have been filled with joyous anticipation as we move from the solemnity of the High Holidays to the excitement - and hopefully cooler weather - of the Chag.

In contrast to recent years, we will be having school during Chol HaMoed (the intermediate days) in order to give our students the opportunity to sit, eat and learn in our SR Campus sukkah, and as a way of incorporating special field trips and chesed (community service) tied to the religious holiday, and to our cultural and historic roots here in Dallas.

As our prayers reach out to the victims of natural disaster in Colorado, and violence in D.C., we wish you all a

Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom from all of us at Yavneh,

Dr. P.

The Nurse's Corner ~
   Susan Donnenfield, RN

Dear Yavneh families,

I am writing to inform you that while there have been many reported cases of Pertussis (also known as "whooping cough"), we

now also have a confirmed case in our Jewish community (although not a Yavneh family member).

Please make sure that all family members, adults as well as children, are properly immunized--with the DTaP vaccine (for younger children) or Tdap vaccine (tetanus shot with pertussis protection for ages 11 and over).  Pertussis is especially dangerous for infants who do not receive their first vaccine until 2 months of age. Many adults have not yet had the pertussis vaccine as part of the tetanus shot. Adults can easily carry the pertussis infection while showing only mild cough symptoms. Please consult your doctor to see if you have had or need to update your own vaccine record.

Please click here for information about Pertussis ("whooping cough").  Cases of whooping cough are being reported in higher numbers than previous years, calling for all adults to be immunized, if not already.

As always, contact your doctor for information on whether you have had your tetanus shot with Pertussis component.

If you have any questions, please call Nurse Donnenfield at 214.295.3500 (ext 1617) or email sdonnenfield@srcampus.org

Yavneh in Review

"If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning ..."

So went this past Sunday as members of Yavneh's Bulldog Basketball team fanned out to members of the community to help build their sukkahs.

"Building a sukkah is a mitzvah in itself and helping out a fellow member of the  community helps build community bonds and trust between one and other.  Keeping the tradition is always something stressed in Judaism and building a sukkah only helps that," said Adam Karnett '14, Captain of the 13-14 Varsity Bulldog Basketball team.

"It is important for us as a basketball program, and as students of Yavneh Academy,  to offer our help to families that are so supportive of the school and athletic programs.
As basketball practices usually begin around the high holidays it offers a chance for us to bond as a team and get to know new teammates.  We learn to work together in something besides basketball to achieve a common goal."

and Noah Weiss '15.

"For, I believe 10 years, the Bulldogs have participated in this wonderful team building exercise, and it's appreciated by those of us who share in their efforts," said Ron Romaner, whose family benefits from the labor of the students.  "It's a great idea for a team fundraiser, it's fun, and it's definitely a huge help to me.

"As a proud member of the Jewish community in Dallas, our boys' mitzvah project to build the sukkahs lets me again know that we at Yavneh have the future Jewish leaders of this community in our classrooms

and on our campus," said David Zimmerman, Yavneh's Athletic Director, Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, Director of Co-Curricular Activities.   "What we as a basketball program do off of the court is just as important as what we do on the court. Gemilut Chasadim, deeds of loving kindness,  is a mission that all of our players take very seriously and being proud representatives of their Jewish faith is at the heart of everything they do as a basketball team.  Through this wonderful tradition, our young men are making our Jewish future look very bright."
