From the Head of School ~
   Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

To be a successful Yavneh student, one must balance a strong Jewish identity with a deep appreciation for the privileges of being an American citizen.

This week, we prepared for Selichot and Rosh Hashanah, while showing solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel amidst increasing tension in that region.  We also marked the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, appreciating the dual curriculum and personal identity our students enjoy every day.

Daily prayers (davening) have been filled with great intention (kavanah), and we reveled in biblically inspired words of Dr. King, who reminded us that "all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics" are the inheritors of "a dream deeply rooted in the American dream."

As we prepare for Selichot, Labor Day and the High Holidays, please know how grateful we are for our Jewish and American heritages, and for the privilege of teaching your children each day.

On behalf of the entire faculty and student body,

I wish you a Shana Tova and Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

 Nurses Corner ~
                      ~~ Susan Donnenfield RN

The Texas Department of State Health Services has been notified of 20 cases of confirmed measles in residents from North Texas.
At this time, there are no known cases of confirmed measles at Yavneh!

*  Measles is highly contagious and is transmitted primarily from person to person by

     respiratory droplets and airborne spread.

*  The incubation period is about two weeks from exposure to onset of fever.  A person

is contagious from four days before onset of rash to four days after appearance of

rash. Symptoms of measles include rash, fever higher than 101 degrees F, cough,

    runny nose, or eye redness.

*  A person suspected of having measles should contact his or her health care provider

    for diagnosis immediately.

*  If a positive diagnosis for measles has been given, your school nurse must be

    informed.

*  The usual recommendation is to stay home until four days after rash onset has

    passed.

*  The Dallas County Health Department also recommends that students who are not

immunized with MMR vaccination (i.e. due to reasons of conscience) should be

quarantined for 21 days if there is even one case at the student's school.

Yavneh in Review

Class of '14 Parents College Info Session ~
The Class of 2014 college applications are underway!!! Yavneh's College Counselor, Guidance Director, and Testing Coordinator, Allyn Schmucker - who has been working with students since their Junior year, met with Senior Class parents on Tuesday to ready the road.

Beginning her seventh year at Yavneh, with more than 25 years as an education professional, Mrs. Schmucker is a certified counselor by the Texas Board of Education and a licensed professional counselor.

"I absolutely LOVE working with my students and seeing them through the process is really a great joy to me," said Mrs. Schmucker.  "There is a school for every child and finding the right fit is all part of the process."

Mrs. Schmucker shared with parents the application process, types of applications, scholarship and housing cues, and deadlines to make note of.  Yavneh hosts representatives from colleges throughout the fall season, giving students an opportunity to ask questions, make connections, and learn more about schools from around the country.

"Mrs. Schmucker's level of care and concern is unparalleled, said Dr.David Portnoy, Head of School.  "This group of seniors is exceptional and we look forward to following their success."

Martin Luther King remembered ~

Yavneh students Valerie Lopez '14, Hilla Zach '17, Serina Romick '15, and Jonathan Ochstein '16 brought the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech.

Indeed, the mission and  prayers of Dr. King are learned, and lived, by the students of Yavneh everyday, as they pursue and work toward their own dreams.

Back to school orientation ~

Yavneh's first Friday morning was spent orienting our students to each other, to our clubs and organizations, and to the "Yavneh Way..." While most orientations involve discussions of policies and rules, at Yavneh - we are never just typical!

Bagels and cream cheese, a learning session, song and dance (complete with
Rabbi Michael Friedman and Rabbi Michel Lomner as our house "band"!), ice-breakers and our annual game of human bingo, made the morning a special one (of course, then followed by the details of rules and policy!)

"It was a fantastic end to our first week of school," said Naomi Schrager, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming.  "After all, learning, singing, eating and getting to know each other are some of our favorite activities at Yavneh! The ruach in our halls is palpable and we know it will only grow stronger as the year progresses!"

Rabbi Gerald J. Klein Summer Internship

Kol Hakavod to Yavneh's Adam Karnett '14, Scott Lacritz '15, and Erin Wernick '15, 2013 participants in the Rabbi Gerald J. Klein Summer Internship Program.

Facilitated through Jewish Family Service, and initiated  in 2009 by the M.B. and Edna Zale Foundation as a lasting tribute to Temple Emanu-El's rabbi, the Klein Internship Program affords students the opportunity to intern many non-profit organizations.

Adam Karnett spent the summer of 2013 at the Dallas Arboretum, Scott Lacritz at CHAI/Community Homes for Adults, Inc., and Erin Wernick as a buddy at Torah Day School of Dallas's Summer Camp, in a program partnered with the JFS' Special Needs Initiative.

"These three interns from Yavneh added energy and enthusiasm to our program.

They were bright rays of light that shined brightly at their respective agency and reflected their strength and leadership to the agencies they served," said Beri Schwitzer, Director of Volunteer Services at JFS.  "They were wonderful ambassadors for JFS and we are thankful for their service and dedication.
