From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

We are off to an amazing start to the 2013-2014 School Year!  From welcoming alumni excitedly off to college and Israel for the year, to introducing a fantastic group of freshmen, this year's school opening ranks among the finest I've seen in all my years as an educator.

Thanks to all of you who attended our new parent meeting and back-to-school picnic earlier this week.  Your upbeat attitude and positive spirit augur well a great year ahead for us all at Yavneh.

To all of our parents: While our job is to educate and engage your children in school (feel free to ask about my special PowerPoint presentation to each class), your job is to make sure they are getting enough rest, eating well and staying safe on Shabbat and the weekends.  We are here to support you in those efforts, and the school-parent partnership is a sacred one that we appreciate and cherish.

It's going to be a great year!

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

Yavneh in Review
Back to school!

When Yavneh's Bulldog Head Coach David Zimmerman blew the shofar during morning prayer services on Wednesday morning, he rang out the voice of Elul - the preparation for the upcoming Jewish New Year.  In doing so, too welcomed the start of Yavneh Academy's 2013-2014 year.

121 Yavneh students and faculty members make the Schultz Rosenberg Campus

(SR Campus) their academic home, combining first-rate college preparatory studies with those of personal history and heritage.

"We are prepping our students for every facet of their futures," said Dr. David Portnoy, Yavneh Academy's Head of School.  "Values may change but virtues do not.  Kindness, learning an understanding of who we are - those make the cornerstone of who we are."

To kick off the start of its twentieth year, student families and faculty gathered in Pollman Hall on Monday for a New Parent Orientation and Back-To-School Picnic, where old friendships were renewed and new ones introduced.

Earlier in the day, faculty gathered for their own orientation, welcomed to the new year by Meyer Denn, Executive Director of the Center for Jewish Education at the Jewish Federation of

Greater Dallas.

Wednesday morning's first day was initiated with

Dr. Portnoy, in his place, welcoming each student during carpool.  Morning services, schedule delivery, and a first-day breakfast were quickly followed by the start of the academic year.  During the day, Dr. Portnoy met with each grade to welcome them and to discuss related matters.

This school year we've seen the

installation of SMART Boards in each classroom, dedicated study hall periods for each grade level, and teacher assistance available with Writing, Math, Science Labs open for additional assistance each morning.  Dr. Portnoy also announced that longtime faculty member, and Science Department Chair, Dr. Steven Goldfine, is now serving as Dean of Faculty, overseeing issues related to students with learning differences, accreditation, and faculty needs.

This morning, students participated in an orientation day with introductions to Yavneh's expansive array of extra-curricular activities - those of sport, social, and service.

"We are excited about getting back to school, an opportunity to exercise our students' reading, mathematic, scientific, and Judaic academic and spiritual muscles," said Dr. Portnoy.  "Our students, already in great shape, are ready for a terrific year."
