Dear Yavneh Family,

We made it! A hearty Mazel Tov to all our students and teachers for a job well done!

As I reflect on the 2012-2013 school year and all we've accomplished, I am filled with a sense of joy  and gratitude for everything we've shared.  As I noted at this week's graduation ceremony, in Jewish tradition we mark such joyful times with prayers of thanksgiving. In Psalm 118, verse 24, we read, "Zeh hayom asah HaShem, nagilah v'nismecha vo - This is the day that the Lord has made-let us exult and rejoice in it." (I also beseeched our graduates to consider moving back to Dallas after they finish college and grad school - since it's a place they all belong - and promised free babysitting once they start their own families ;o)

Thank you to all of you who attended Graduation - our first on the Yavneh campus - and to all of you who supported our students through their week of final exams, final papers and other projects.

Summer is a time for recharging one's batteries, traveling, and reading.  Our students will be reading a good deal over the summer; let us continue to be good role models for them by picking up a book of our own as well.

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom, and a wonderful summer break!

                                                            ~~ Dr. P.

The Class of 2013

Yavneh Academy of Dallas' Class of 2013 is bound for greatness as the class received its diplomas, well wishes, and the turn of tassels on Sunday, June 2.  The administration of Yavneh Academy is pleased to announce the award of co-Valedictorians to Yosef Presburger and Rachel Siegel.  Honors designations were received by Shelby Gadol, Rachel Goodman, Justin Katz, Shea Miller, Clara Moskowitz, Kayley Romick, Elie Schramm, Mika Stein, and Liora Zhrebker.

The school's Sylvia and William Epstein Golden Wedding Anniversary Fund Award for Excellence in Judaic Studies honors were bestowed upon Rachel Goodman and Kayley Romick, who provided the commencement Dvar Torah, and Yavneh's Gabbai award, was given to Tamar Cohen and Elie Schramm.

Completing the 2013 class roster are Rachel Chanon, Tamar Cohen, Samuel Coretz, Lane Engelberg, Karen Folz, Hannah Gartner, Jordan Haberer, Kelly Herson, Katie Lerer, Joshua Lynn, Stephanie Medina, Bradley Riche, Rachel Rudberg, Max Schnitzer, Yael Spirer, and Adam Wilensky.  All honors were bestowed during commencement ceremonies at the school's Schultz Rosenberg Campus.

"I realize that the greatest teachings and lessons imaginable can not only be communicated from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or the stages of Stratford-upon-Avon. Instead, they make themselves known in a campus beit midrash during an afternoon lesson between rabbi and student," said Siegel who will attend Yale University. They are passed on in a guidance counselor's cozy office over miniature Twix bars and the Insiders Guide to Colleges, and are transmitted in song during the monthly recitation of Hallel."

Yosef Presburger & Rachel Siegel

"With a mindset that the great Rabbi Hillel would describe with the phrase "If not now, when?" Yavneh gave us the tools and opportunities to explore our talents and to make a difference in this world- in other words, to make the most of the present," said Presburger who will go to Rice University.  "In addition, Yavneh connected us with our past and taught us how our past still affects us. There is no greater example of this than the March of the Living. We will remember how we marched into Birkenau. How we marched into the gas chambers. But we will also remember how we walked out of the gas chambers, out of Birkenau, and into the land of Israel."

Dr. Tim Cloward & Dr. David Portnoy

Prior to certifying the class for graduation, Head of School Dr. David Portnoy spoke to each student aloud, recalling a memory from over the past four years, or sharing with the audience special traits, honors, and talents of each child. "Your work ethic is strong, and you are able to succeed - no matter what the task or responsibility," he said of the Class of 2013 which has raised more than $85,000 to help numerous causes around the world.  "Deeply committed to our Jewish tradition and the community, you are proud of your heritage - and we are proud of you as well."

Adam Wilensky,
Coach Zack Pollack & Josh Lynn

The students thanked Yavneh Bulldog Basketball JV Head Coach, and Varsity  Assistant Coach, Zack Pollack for a dozen years of commitment, drive, and mentorship. Dan Prescott, outgoing president, spoke on behalf of Yavneh's Board of Directors.  Congratulations and blessings were shared by Yavneh's Associate

Associate Principals
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum & Naomi Schrager

Principal's Naomi Schrager and Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, as well as YavnehMom Cindy Moskowitz, Chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, which has donated more than $500,000 to Yavneh, to support the education it provides, in the last five years.  Yavneh Assistant Principal Dr. Tim Cloward, Prescott, and past-president, Pam Fine, handed out the students' diplomas and Leon Ziligson accompanied the students during the processional and recessional.

Pam Fine, Cindy Moskowitz
& Dan Prescott

"You have been a part of a school community inspired by and resonant with Jewish values, and complemented with

rigorous college preparatory coursework,"said Moskowitz.
"
Like the graduates who preceded you, our community sees in you, leaders who are passionate, connected, committed and prepared to transform the world.

The 27 members of Yavneh Academy's eighteenth graduating class received acceptance letters to 54 universities and colleges, Israel gap-year programs.  They received more than $2.5 million in scholarships, and served 15,367 hours of community service.  Their average score on each of the SAT exams was almost 200 points above the Texas state average and the 11 honors students scored greater than a 94 percent in their four years at the school.

"It is here that we were encouraged to become independent-thinking Jewish men and women guided by the examples set before us by our own teachers, to whom we are so grateful," said Siegel. "Many among us have already dedicated our time to defend our Jewish heritage, bring education to the Third World, feed the hungry, and raise funds for victims of terror. Who knows who among us will one day take to the world's grandest of stages to deliver the next 'I Have a Dream,' the foundation for which will have been laid by these last four years at Yavneh?"

And you have shared the breadth and depth of your knowledge with many.  Your Jewish education has taught you responsibility to others, something you take very seriously.  You exude intelligence, purpose, energy and high principle.  We are all grateful for your time at Yavneh - and wish you all the best going forward.

Rachel Siegel ~
                Yale University

"More often than not, it is YOU - speaking or writing about others - as you have just done - more comfortable on the reporting side of the story than as the subject. And at the risk of embarrassing you one last time, let me just say that your poise, your heart, your resolve, and your optimism - when paired with your formidable intellect and humility - are the winningest combination of all.  We look forward to hearing about your future successes, and wish you well."

Yael Spirer ~
                University of Texas

"You are articulate, enthusiastic, high spirited and reliable - a great communicator who is there for others. You are a solid student and a wonderful person. Your energy and enthusiasm can be found from the volleyball court to your part-time job, as you manage, it seems, to do it all."

Mika Stein ~
                New York University

"You are an exceptional person. Willing to work hard for what you need to accomplish, you have never complained about what you didn't' have - and always focused on what you do have. Adam Wilensky ~
     Young Judaea YearCourse

"Your goals include a strong education, and you have the aptitude and tools to succeed. Interested in culinary arts, you would like to combine a business degree with your love of cooking. Liora Zhrebker ~
                Brandeis University

Closing out 2012-2013

Welcome Home to ~~

Ari Geller '15 and Benji Zoller '16 who took part in the 2013 Israel Day Parade in New York City.  Continuing their finals prep on transatlantic flights last weekend, these Yavneh students, parents Miriam Geller and David Zoller, and YavnehAlum, Sophie Geller '10, now a student at  Yeshiva University/Stern College, felt the trip a life lesson in the making! Ari and Benji, both local Madrichim, counselors of Bnai Akiva, participated in the march, at the close of a Shabbaton weekend at Camp Moshava Indian Orchard, of close to 400 participants, sponsored by Bnei Akiva.

"The Saturday night havdalah service, which lasted for over ten minutes, had the entire place shaking, and singing," said Ari who made his second trip to the parade, his first to the Shabbaton.  "At the parade, it was awesome to see so many people from all over, Jewish and non-Jewish standing on the side lines supporting Israel, and taking pictures. We marched with people from all over and the atmosphere of both the Shabbaton and parade had so much ruach - really great spirit."

More than one million people attended last Sunday's Israel Day Parade, showing support for Israel and celebrating its sixty-fifth anniversary. More than 30,000 marchers and 17 bands brought the theme, "Picture Israel" to life through the streets of Manhattan, carrying collages, paintings or any pictures designed to show the diversity and experience of the Israeli people.

"It was honestly incredible.  To see so many people and organizations supporting Israel was really just amazing, and being able to march with Bnei Akiva was the perfect year to end off my year," said Benji, who last year revived the Bnei Akiva chapter at Congregation Shaare Tefilla.  "When I was able to be march, sing, and dance for my home land with my friends from around the continent, and thousands of other people, it was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had."
