From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,

It's hard to believe that we are already at the end of the school year! It seems like just yesterday that we arrived in Dallas, and I took up my morning post in the Yavneh parking lot.
We have met so many wonderful people at school and throughout the Dallas community this year. I have been continually impressed by the welcome Shira and I have received all year long - in synagogues and schools, in homes, and in organizations throughout the community.
This is a special community indeed, and we are grateful to be a part of it.
As our underclassmen prepare for final exams (Parents - please remember to keep them well fed and rested), our Senior class is readying for Graduation this Sunday at 3pm on our campus. All are welcome!
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
Dr. P.

Class of 2013 - Liora Zhrebker
"Yavneh is: Diverse. Unparalled. A Gem."
"I wanted to continue my Jewish education in a school that graduated students who excel in the world but who also want to maintain their Jewish faith," said Liora. "In Yavneh I found the perfect school that provides both a strong education that makes its students knowledgeable and worldly citizens, and a strong Jewish education, one that allows its students not only to maintain a strong Jewish faith and understanding when they graduate but to have a Jewish curiosity about the Torah and Jewish law."
"Yavneh's teachers aren't just instructors, they are mentors," said Liora. "Our faculty guides its students toward the right path, providing a nurturing environment. They maintain a unique personal relationship with the students, helping them always."
"Liora Zhrebker is a great kid: one of the quietest and most earnest of Yavneh's students and she has proven herself to be a great asset to class and her peers," said Dr. Steven Goldfine, Science Department Chairperson. "She works hard, both because she has set a goal for herself and because she obviously likes learning, and it shows."

For Liora, Yavneh's dual-curriculum provides a seamless schedule for daily learning "that one almost doesn't notice the obvious differences between the educational settings of Judaic courses and General Studies," she says. "Our schedule is mapped out in such a way that there is a perfect balance. We indulge ourselves in Jewish thought the first half of the day only to make connections between their Jewish and General studies the second half and those connections allow us to be more open-minded and even more curious about the connections yet to be discovered."
"Hard work is Liora's middle name," said Math faculty member, Chris Northrup. "The last day of classes before finals my first year at Yavneh and I brought cookies for all of my classes. While the other students discussed plans for summer and the highs and lows of the year coming to an end, Liora said she was bored and wanted more practice for the final exam - even though she didn't even need to take it."
As the year is close to its end, Liora, who was accepted to both Brandeis and Indiana universities, has set her sites are set on packing up for Brandeis University where she plans to prepare for a career in medicine. With goals of becoming a pediatric psychiatrist, Liora has spent time in Dallas shadowing doctors at Children's Medical Center falling "in love" with the interaction between the pediatric psychiatrist and their patients, realizing there is a "whole different dynamic of how a pediatric psychiatrist treats and interacts with their patients."
On Campus, Liora has been a member of Hashinui/Envirocare and the Health Occupations Club, also reporting and serving as a comic artist for The Bulldog Print. An accomplished musician, and ballet dancer and singer in her own rite, Liora has been a constant in our Musical Ensemble, adding grace and beauty to her musical performances.
Liora's summers have included working at Akiba Academy's Camp Kulanu, volunteering her time at Children's Medical Center, and participating on USY's Israel Pilgrimage, thru which she spent time touring and volunteering in a school for children with cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, at a soup kitchen in Jerusalem, and packaging meals for victims of terrorism.
The daughter of Leah and Cantor Itzhak Zhrebker, Liora is the eldest sister of Hannah and Devorah. A native of Ramat Gan, Israel, who moved to Dallas when she was just 18-months-old, Liora is a member of Congregation Shearith Israel and a graduate of Akiba Academy.
An active leader in the CSI Zohar Chapter of United Synagogue Youth, she has served on the chapter board for two years and as the SW Region Vice-President of Religion, Education, and Culture. "I have become more connected to my spiritual and religious self since becoming involved in USY," said Liora. "As the REC VP, I'm excited to help others do the same."
Liora has written thousands of words as a blogger, private and personal - her thoughts stream of who she is for her experiences. Liora, For us, the Yavneh Family, our own experience a far more meaningful one for having shared with you.

Yavneh in Review
Seniors Farewell Continues ...
An idea launched during a Bulldog Basketball game became the impetus for Barbara Carr-Goodman, Anita Chanon, Kineret Cohen, Gail Herson, and Holly Lynn to co-chair the Class of 2013 Farewell Senior Dinner.
The Seniors, their parents and faculty members too enjoyed a delicious meal catered by A Taste of the World, a photo fun booth, hosted by Anita and Todd Chanon, a montage of memories of the very close class, by Lane Engelberg, Justin Katz, and Bradley Riche, and a series of "Senior Superlatives," created by Rachel Chanon,
Rachel Goodman, Clara Moskowitz, Max Schnitzer, and Mika Stein.
Senior gifts of class photos were created by Debbie Katz and Cindy Moskowitz and additional preparations were shared by Leah Engelberg, Susan Rapoport-Presburger with support from all of the Seniors' family members.
"I've taught in many, many schools and in all of my career I've never known a class so cohesive, so happy, and so thoughtful," said Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy. "There must have been something in the water 18 years ago. This has been an extraordinary group and I thank you for making my first year, here at Yavneh, an exceptional experience."
"There is so much love in this room and your students will always remember that," said Dr. Portnoy. "Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. None of you are in this alone, always know we cherish you dearly and deeply."
Yavneh's Science Faculty member Lourdes Linzey
and her Freshmen and Junior Physics classes presented their
"End of Year Physics Fair," with fellow classmates, parents, and faculty members touring the high school lobby, taking in a variety of learning experiments.
Many thanks to event judges Mark Keimer and Kayle Salinda.

Mitzvah Makers!
A three-day holiday weekend means sleeping in and hangin' out - but not for the three dozen students and faculty of Yavneh Academy and the Dallas Chapter of the National Council of Synagogue Youth who made their way, early Sunday morning, to Moore, Oklahoma. The Dallas-area volunteers spent the day cleaning amidst the rubble, delivering food and drink to residents, and searching for lost treasures. Their presence, was not understated. "The way these kids and their advisers came into town and rolled up their sleeves and got right to work - it was a true Kiddush Hashem (sanctification of the Name)," said Rabbi Ovadia Goldman, Director of the Chabad Community Center For Jewish Life and Learning in Oklahoma City. "They were one of the first youth groups to come out and help, even before those who live much closer to us and our community has truly been touched."
Yavneh representatives included Niv Avneri '14, Sarah Barnett '14, Haley Chestler '15, Hadas Cohen '15, Jordan Cope '14, Hannah Delagi '14, Meir Epstein '15, Michelle Friedstadt '14, Ari Geller '15, Ori Guttman '15, Austin Jacoby '15, Elvira Levi '15, Rabbi Michel Lomner, Logan Luskey '14, Risa Mond '16, Ethan Pearson '15, Yosef Presburger '13, Naomi Schrager, Noah Shore '15, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Dania Tanur '14, Noah Weiss '15, Erin Wernick '15, and Sammy Weyser '16. Yavneh students, and NCSY members, Valerie Lopez '14, Stephanie Medina '13, Clara Wohlstadter '15, were excited to bridge their Jewish school and social friends to share in the day's deeds. YavnehFamily members and friends, including Dr. Eric Jacoby, Sofia Joison, Jocelyn Lopez, Leslie Lopez, Carolyn San Soucie, Tamar Schrager, Tsipporah Schrager, Liat Sterenfeld and Dr. Eduardo Tanur too shared in the day's mitzvah making. The Yavneh students joined NCSYers Sarah Ehrenpreis, Andrew Fowler, Cayli Fowler, Rabbi Yaakov Rosenblatt, Ariel Refua, Erin Van Crevald, and Lexi Van Creveld. "Imo anochie batzara - we're with you in your pain, and we share in your grief. There is massive need and a massive opportunity for us to be a part of," said Rabbi Michel Lomner, who is on faculty at Yavneh, and who also works with Rabbi Israel LaShak, Dallas' NCSY Regional Director, who coordinated the project with Rabbi Goldman. "It was so powerful and inspiring to all of us who participated, and helping in this kind of crisis is what we stand for as Jews." "This was a very meaningful trip," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Yavneh Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum, noting the possibility of continuing the relationship with those in Oklahoma, the concept of a 2013/14 Shabbaton on the minds of many.. "This was a great opportunity for our kids who are hands-on and a wonderful first-hand experience sometimes we don't get to see the tangible results of our efforts. Here we physically placed food into their hands, we interacted with those that lost so much, and we sifted through the rubble, grateful to return any salvageable items." The group found homes that had sustained little damage, those with quite a bit, and others - with vehicles wrapped around what might have been a kitchen, and love letters found amidst the brush. From early morning until mid-afternoon, they separated trash from wood, bricks, and personal items. "This area, with not at all a large Jewish population, is incredibly supporting of Eretz Yisroel; financially, emotionally, and many of here travel there often,"said Rabbi Goldman, who with his wife Nechama and their five children, have been based in Oklahoma City since 1998. The couple hosted the volunteers for a bbq dinner before the group returned to Dallas. "For our residents to see that immediate respon se came from Jewish students, in their dire time of need, made a great impact, and we welcome anyone who wants to continue to help."
"The reality of what we saw, compared to what appears on television, is incredible. You can't even imagine what it is for these people to have lost everything," said Yosef Presburger '13, who first heard of the volunteering opportunity late Saturday night, but was at prayers at Yavneh with his friends by 6:30am on Sunday, and on the road an hour later. "We found 'little' things like a toothbrush but it was someone's toothbrush, from their home that likely doesn't exist. I didn't even have to think about going - if I didn't go, it would be like I never learned anything at Yavneh or in my life." Click here to read more about the NCSY/Yavneh team of volunteers. Click here to make a donation through the Chabad Community Center/OKC Hadas Cohen '15 and Rachel Rudberg '13 are a couple of cuts above the rest! While many are prepping for summer with a shorter "do" this season, these young ladies made Locks for Love the beneficiary of their fashionable mitzvah forey. For Hadas, who cut off 11 inches, this was the first time she's contributed, and for Rachel - whose cut released her of almost a foot inches of curls, has made the hairdo donation on four occasions. "I've always thought it an important gift to give one's hair and mine was long enough," said Hadas. "Hair grows and I'm happy to be able to share it with someone who needs it." Kol Hakavod to Ronit Dickter '16 and YavnehMom Sandra, who have started a local chapter of Polished Girlz, a group of young women dedicated to volunteering and connecting with young ladies who are hospitalized or living with chronic illness. "I have always loved colorful nail polishes and I aspire to be a pediatric nurse practitioner," said Ronit, who first learned of the organization on the Ellen Degeneres Show. " I knew this was a great way to combine my two passions and the smiles on the girls faces are priceless!" Joining Ronit and her Mom in the chapter's first outing at the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas, were Yavneh Freshmen, Danielle Berman, Carolyn Smith, and Leetal Winick. As an organization, the Polished Girlz seek to empower not only their clients, but their volunteers, by offering them opportunities to improve the quality of life, build invaluable leadership skills, and providing them with opportunities for community service, For information on joining Ronit in the spirit of sharing smiles and happy days, email ronitdickter@me.com
Sophomores Hadas Cohen, Scott Lacritz, and Erin Wernick are sponsoring a tenn is shoe drive to support Peace Direct, an organization that helps prevent genocide around the world.Donations of tennis shoes (new or used but in good condition) of all sizes, and for males and females, are welcome. The collection box will be posted in the Student Lounge until June 7.
