From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,

Every few weeks, our Yavneh students get a "You Are What You Speak" lecture from yours truly. In that special community time following the Mincha service,
I stress the importance of the spoken and written word, with such caveats as not starting a sentence with, "Me and Josh ..." Indeed, the importance of the spoken word is a cornerstone of our Jewish tradition, from restrictions on certain forms of speech to the beauty of our sacred texts.
A proud part of the Yavneh academic tradition is our faculty's emphasis on close reading and clear writing. Within the writing curriculum, we offer a healthy dose of Creative Writing and Poetry, and this month are proud to recognize Dallas' Top Student Poet, Mika Stein '13, who is our second Top Student Poet in the past four years. (The other, Becky Schisler '10, just completed her junior year at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.)
As Mr. O'Quinn used to say, this is The Little School That Could!
As we enter the final few weeks of school, please continue to support our Yavneh students all the way through their final papers and exams. And, as their verbal role models, please continue to mind your P's and Q's, to choose your words carefully, and to communicate in ways that are clear, kind and supportive.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
Dr. P.

Class of 2013 - Mika Stein
"Yavneh is: Communal. Enriching. Exhausting."
"I decided to come to Yavneh for two reasons," said Mika, who transferred from Hillcrest High School, joining the Class of 2013 as a sophomore. "I felt that my freshman year wasn't challenging enough and, having attended Levine and Wise academies, and the JCC, I really did miss the Jewish experience as a part of my education. Here, I've been surrounded by a loving Jewish community and I believe I've received an enriched Jewish education. Here, both the secular and Jewish curricula have been challenging and I've been encouraged to perform at my best."
"My classes at Yavneh seem to compliment each other as a lesson learned from Torah study can help us understand a piece of literature," said Mika, "and a lesson from a history class will often match right up with a lesson from Jewish Thought and Law."
A Dallas native, Mika is the son of the late Deborah Stein and the grandson of Moe Stein, and a member of Congregation Shearith Israel. He has worked at the JCC as both a counselor at Camp Chai and as a lifeguard. He's attended BBYO's CLTC/Chapter Leadership Training Conference, the ILTC/International Leadership Training Conference, International Kallah, and the BBYO Passport International Leadership Seminar in Israel.
A member of Bnai Brith Youth Organization's Rubin Kaplan AZA #841, Mika served as the North Texas/Oklahoma Regional Aleph Gadol (President) and Shaliach (Secretary), Moreh (Membership Vice-President), and two terms as Godol of his chapter. Recently elected as the 2013-2014 Grand Aleph Godol/International President of BBYO, he will travel from community to community, worldwide, to consult with teen leaders and staff and meet with community partners. He will also oversee the work of the rest of the International Executive Board.
"Mika is an exemplary leader amongst our student body, always standing for an unwavering commitment to Torah, Judaism, and the Jewish people," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum. "I can only hope that he can take those values outside the hallowed walls of Yavneh and inspire and educate Jewish teens across the world."

"I cannot remember a student who so personally inspired me as Mika does," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum. "The way he has overcome such adversity, literally laughing in the face of challenge, sounds like a work of fiction, not the authentic biography of Mika Stein. His spirit, friendliness, and leadership will certainly be missed."
Due to his responsibilities to BBYO, Mika, who has been accepted to New York University, will defer his Freshman year. He plans to study media and communications, with the goal of becoming an entertainment agent or attorney. "Ever since I was 11 and first saw the HBO hit Entourage, I wanted to be just like Ari Gold," said Mika. "Later I learned that his character is actually based on a real life individual, Ari Emanuel, whose not only one of the top talent agents but he's also a major philanthropist and active member in the Jewish community. It's because of this that I want to be either a talent agent or entertainment lawyer."
"In the most positive of ways, Mika is the consummate politician," said The Bulldog Print advisor and Journalism teacher, Sandy Hall-Chiles. "With keen interests in the welfare of this country, of Israel and of the world in general, Mika's affable ways and incredible powers of persuasion cannot help but lead our future to a better place."
"In this game of life, we will never find Mika on the sidelines, but instead a little to the left of center as the quarterback of all his drives," said Mrs. Hall-Chiles. "Mika moves people with his charisma, his character and his causes. That his heart is in the right place makes his nature so full of promise."
"Mika has always been Mr. Personality," agreed Math Department Chair, Veronica Thomas. "Overcoming much, Mika continued to worked very hard and he always had a story to tell."
At Yavneh, Mika has been an award-winning member of The Bulldog Print newspaper staff and an actor in the Theatre Club in the 2011 production of The Importance of Being Earnest. He's been a member of Helping Hands for the Homeless, Mock Trial, Students Against Terrorism/Points for Peace, and Uniting Students of Dallas.
A self-described, "extremely determined" young man, Mika was recently honored as the Dallas' Top Student Poet, with the Dallas Public Library's Express Yourself 17th Annual Youth Poetry Competition's 2013 Joe M. and Doris Russell Dealey Award of Achievement. Mika's "The Poet's Burning," submission, one of 1300 student entries this year, was been published in the Express Yourself 2013 journal.
"I believe in a sense of family and my Grandfather, Moe Stein, has always taught me that Judaism is about love and heart. I want to share that through the service I give and I believe I can achieve anything I want to," said Mika who has worked at Reclaimed Textiles and as a promoter for the Dallas-based pop artist, Bean. "I've learned that being a leader means giving yourself to the people you lead."
Whether it's BBYO, the Yavneh Family, or the many others that you have touched Mika - it's a certainty that you will lead, you will be a leader, and you will matter!

Many thanks to Pam and Jeff Fine for sharing the details
and to Delaney Becker, Rachel Goodman, Sophie Miller, Bradley Riche,
Rachel Rudberg, Mika Stein, and Karen Zucker for the photographs!
"Never Again," is the message, and the March of the Living is the pilgrimage made by thousands of who live as testament, to those who died, who march to remember, who learn to share, who stand in honor. From April 4 to 18, Yavneh Academy seniors touring Poland and Israel as participants on the March of the Living were Rachel Chanon, Tamar Cohen, Shelby Gadol, Rachel Goodman, Justin Katz, Kelly Herson, Katie Lerer, Shea Miller, Stephanie Medina, Clara Moskowitz, Yosef Presburger, Rachel Siegel, Bradley Riche, Rachel Rudberg, Max Schnitzer, Elie Schramm, Yael Spirer, and Mika Stein. Joining the group were Metroplex students Andrew Appell, Marcy Applebaum, Delaney Becker, and Sophie Miller, and Ariella Noorily from San Antonio. 2013 chaperones were Pam Hochster Fine, Max Glauben, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, and Karen Zucker.
"Every year the group is great and, no question, this year's kids are really articulate, very thoughtful and sensitive," said Mrs. Fine who has coordinated Yavneh's MOL program for 11 years.
"The students were very articulate about their experiences and they asked lots of great questions," said Mrs. Fine. "There was much sharing about the sense of 'being home' in Israel, the sense of pride in being Jewish, the desire to be more committed to their Judaism and to Israel and lots of words about feeling grateful for being here.
We spoke a lot about the contradictions and juxtapositions of the trip and how to manage feelings of both sadness and joy."
"I've grown up to 'never forget and always remember.' I couldn't grasp what that meant until I stood looking at scratch marks on the walls. I don't know how people could be so cruel," said Delaney Becker, a senior at Plano West Senior High and the third of Max's grandchildren to travel the MOL by his side. In 2012, Max's son Phil also marched with his father. "My Zayde is an inspiration. I'm proud to be a part of my family and to pass on his legacy."

"I hadn't been back in 60 years before my first trip with Yavneh. I've now gone eight times and every trip is different," said Max who was 10-years-old when the war broke out, and who lost his parents and brother during the war. At 13 he was sent to Majdanek, to Budzyn, Mielec, Wieliczka and Flossenburg before being liberated, by a Jewish soldier, while on a death march to Dachau. Later serving in the U.S. Army, in the Korean War, he ultimately made Dallas his home. "These students expressed themselves with so much feeling and incredible impact."

Wrapped warm in layers, this was the first March in memory that saw significant snow and low temperatures. In Cracow, the group visited Plaschow and Zgody Square where Rabbi Tannenbaum, led a tour of a cemetery behind the Ramah's Shul wherein his own ancestors are buried. "There's something uplifting, even in a cemetery, about standing at the gravesite of an often quoted and famous Rabbi," said Mrs. Fine.
The group went to Treblinka, where an estimated 800,000 Jews were killed, to Majdanek, where Max recounted his time there, and to Tykotchin, where more than 1400 were taken over a three-day period and killed in its forest. Yavneh seniors Elie Schramm and Rachel Siegel conducted a class, at the restored Yeshiva in Lublin, in honor of Rabbi Meir Shapiro who founded the "one page per day," or "daf yomi" system of Talmudic study.
While at the entrance to the former Warsaw Ghetto, timing was everything. The Yavneh group witnessed what few could imagine as the Chiefs of the Israel and Polish armed forces laid a Star of David wreath, at the Rappaport Monument. "It was almost surreal," said Mrs. Fine. "To stand where 70 years ago the Warsaw Ghetto uprising started - and to witness this ceremony, with all of its implications, was incredibly moving."
"As a 14-year-old I never could have imagined this moment. This respect, and a museum to honor the history of the Jews of Poland, would have been totally unthinkable," said Max who showed the group the entrances to the sewers where, as a child, he would sneak out for food. "I was interviewed by a filmmaker about dogs that are being trained by the Israelis to help the blind. What a difference from the dogs that the Nazis trained to kill.
It's incredible."
The group marched from Auschwitz to Birkenau, with survivors at the head, often linking arms. Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv and a survivor himself, addressed the participants, just yards from the crematoria of Birkenau, while our own Max led 12,000 marchers in the chanting of the Kaddish prayer for those no longer living, calling the moment "like rising to heaven with a glorification to Hashem."
"Before this trip I had no real way to connect but I absolutely do now," said Stephanie Medina whose trip included her first-ever flight. "I 'adopted' Max and others whose faith I saw I heard their stories. These survivors won't always be with us and for those who died - their stories died with them. We must always defend them."
In time for Yom Ha'Zikaron (Israel's Memorial Day) and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day), the group arrived in Israel to climb Masada and visit the Ein Gedi nature preserve. In a moving experience, the group met with the parents of Michael Levine, z"l, a lone soldier from the USA, who was killed in 2006, Lebanon during battle.
Rachel Goodman and Kelly Herson, co-Presidents of Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism and co-Chairs of the 2013 Points for Peace basketball tournament, were cheered as they presented $48,000, to ZAKA, this year's P4P beneficiary - the donation to support ZAKA's rescue and recovery efforts, throughout Israel.

On Shabbat morning, in Jerusalem,
the group attend prayer services, took walking tours and they reconnected with many Yavneh alumni who are studying in Israel or serving in the Israel Defense Forces.

A second "march," a march of the living, found the students making their way from Safra Square, in downtown Jerusalem, to the Kotel where Rabbi Tannenbaum led thousands in the Sh'ma.
"This trip was life-changing. As I walked out of the camps, the forests, and the gas chambers, I realized I was doing something those who died couldn't," said Yosef Presburger. "I saw Max walk out with such pride and strength - and the dignity. As a People, we must always walk with that dignity."
Reflections of many echo Yosef's, recalling the courage and impact the trip had, the challenges they feel - and those they expect while they are in college, and throughout their lives, in order to honor those who perished. The March of the Living, clearly a collective change of life for the students, building on the pride they had previously and enriching the meaning of "being a Jew," for all.
In an effort to aid our security officers to more easily verify cars entering the campus as well to help identify vehicles parked on campus, a vehicle decal program has recently been implemented throughout the entire Schultz Rosenberg Campus. Any vehicles which regularly park on Campus, or that use carpool lines on a daily basis are asked to display a decal which should be affixed on the upper driver's side windshield of the vehicle. If you have not yet received a decal, please check with LuAnn or Sarah in the main office.
Please be sure to notify the campus security office in advance if you or another authorized person will be picking up your children in a car that will not be displaying the decal in order to avoid any possible delays. We appreciate everyone's help in assuring the security of all on-Campus. Any questions regarding this program, please contact Gary Livingston at 214.295.3409 or email glivingston@srcampus.org
