From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
We learn from our Jewish tradition that a cord of three strands is not easily broken. In the school context, those three strands represent the student, the school, and the family.
I have been a part of Teacher Appreciation Weeks for more than two decades, but I have never seen a show of parent gratitude like the one at Yavneh this week. Under the incredible leadership of Holly Lynn, our teachers and staff were treated to one wonderful gift after another. From early morning pick-me-ups to delicious special meals, I cannot imagine a more meaningful show of appreciation.
Thank you to all the volunteer parents - moms and dads both - who made this week so special, and to all of you who support your children every week of the year - through carpools and academic encouragement, through off-hour sideline meals and general love and caring for your beautiful teenagers.
And remember: we at school tend to see the best your child has to offer each day, and sometimes that takes an awful lot of energy on your teen's part. It's often up to you to deal with the emotions and insecurities that are a normal part of every teenager's existence.
So, thank you - all of you - for your great support of our students, and of Yavneh.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom, and early wishes for Chag Shavuot Sameach,
Dr. P.

Class of 2013 - Yael Spirer
"Yavneh is: Relationships. Unique. Potential."
"People talk about the friendships students make with each other here, and the connection between peers and teachers, and it is definitely true," said Yael, who made the decision to attend Yavneh based on a desire for small classes and the school's reputation for close relationships - between both students and faculty. "I knew Yavneh would be the best school for me because of its dedication to helping students reach their highest potential and I believe I have done that as, in so many ways, Yavneh has lived up to my expectations."
A member of Yavneh's Theatre Troupe, Yael has performed in "A Dybbuk," "Secret Garden," and "Epic Adventures In A Rinky-Dink Art Museum." A Bulldog Volleyball player, Yael has spiked, served, and defined teammate. Readying to attend UT Austin, where she will study nutrition with the hope of a career educating children as to proper health and nutrition, Yael was also accepted to the University of Arizona. "Yael's work is always more than just competent and her questions are always more than just interesting," said Yavneh's Science Chair, Dr. Steven Goldfine. "In fact, Yael's direct way of asking and answering questions contributes greatly to enlivening and enriching class discussions. She certainly helps make class enjoyable." Yael is a native of Netanya, Israel, who moved to Dallas when she was just 18-months-old. The daughter of Ruth and Eli, and the younger sister to Tal (Collette) and Lior (Ashley), Yael is the auntie, and proudly so, of Liam and Camille. A member of Congregation Nishmat Am, Yael attended Wise and Akiba academies before coming to Yavneh. "Yael is a graceful, extremely articulate young woman who manages to stand out despite her quiet ways. She remains fully engaged in class, taking in the discussion before offering her opinions, always in a respectful manner," said English teacher, Paula Harvey. "I believe Yael is an 'old soul, wise and mature beyond her tender years. She exemplifies the best of Yavneh and I know that whatever path she chooses, she will be successful." Yael has been a member of BBYO's Wadel chapter, and she tutors middle school students in Hebrew and math. A volunteer at the Veranda, at Feral Friends Kitty Rescue (from which she has adopted "Oreo" and "Kelly," and Dallas' YACHAD, National Jewish Council for Disabilities chapter participant, Yael has shared her heart, her smile, and her kind spirit throughout the community. "The Judaic classes I have taken at Yavneh have affected my life in so many ways," said Yael. "I think about morals. with our General Studies, Yavneh teaches its students how to become a well-rounded human being and I believe that I've become more conscious about making decisions to be a good person and live a good life." Indeed Yael, your "good life," is only beginning, and your Yavneh Family looks forward to watching all the good you will do, the good you will be, and the good you will contribute, wherever you go.

Yavneh in Review ~
PTO Teacher Appreciation Week Many thanks to Yavneh's Parent Teacher Organization for the thanks they bestowed on our teachers and faculty this week. From caffeine chasers, to delicious breakfast and lunch buffets, springtime flora, and never-ending snacks. Todah Rabah from all to Holly Lynn and her team who also made sure the "ever-so-slight" knots in our necks were released through massage. The most oft-spoken comments from our students are the praise we as teachers and faculty receive for the relationships we build together. Those word, are thanks enough - but the treats, and the sweets, are ever appreciated.
Dallas Public Library Express Yourself Honors ~
Yavneh is proud to annouce that Mika Stein '13 is the winner of the Dallas Public Library's Express Yourself 17th Annual Youth Poetry Competition' 2013
Joe M. and Doris Russell Dealey Award of Achievement.
Mika's "The Poet's Burning," submission was one of 1300 student entries this year. Mika's poem has been published in the Express Yourself 2013 journal.
Among Yavneh's many finalists in the Dallas Public Library's
"Express Yourself" Youth Poetry Competition are this year's
recognized students, Clara Moskowitz '13 and Max Schnitzer '13.
Mika is Yavneh's second top winner of the Joe M. and Doris Russell Dealey Award of Achievement. In 2010, Becky Schisler '10, now completing her Junior year at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, received the high honor for her poem, "The Whites of Their Eyes."
"We are very proud of Mika, Clara, and Max, and this is a remarkable achievement," said Dr. Tim Cloward, Yavneh's Assistant Principal, noting there
Yavneh has had more students, more than a dozen in the last six years,
represented than any other school in Dallas County.
"We offer only one creative writing class to approximately one-third of our seniors each year, and yet we have been able to achieve extraordinary success. This really is a testament to the talents of our students and the effectiveness of our English Department."
The son of the late Deborah Stein, and grandson of Mo Stein, Mika will spend next year representing as
BBYO's 13-14 Grand Aleph Godol/ International President
before he begins his college studies at New York University.
The Poet's Burning - by Mika Stein
I am a matchstick begging to be struck
Screaming, shouting, shattering the sound barrier
PLEASE OH PLEASE STRIKE ME
Ignite me,
Please just light me.
The smell of phosphorous is in the air
Tempting isn't it, oh I dare!
Just push me down
Let my style flare
Give me a page and I will not simply light it
No
I will consume
The whole paper
Every square inch
Engulfed by my words
Consumed by my thoughts, my flaming emotion
My hot words burn
My scorching prose scars
I am the matchstick,
And I dare you to light me.
