From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
As all five living U.S. Presidents visited Dallas and SMU this week in honor of the opening of our newest presidential library, we at Yavneh have been celebrating democracy-in-action in our own way. Under the leadership of two extraordinary Juniors - Dania Tanur and Jason Epstein - we have resuscitated our Student Council, replete with a new constitution, campaign posters, speeches and the first Yavneh student elections in many years.
Speaking to the students this morning in the Beit Midrash (where speeches and elections took place following davening), I shared my pride in all of our students who mustered the courage to put themselves forward for student leadership roles. Prior to today's speeches, each of them ran campaigns that were characterized by healthy competition - competing ideas and diverse personalities - but also with kindness and consideration for one another.
As we welcome our newest group of elected student government officers, we also welcome the broader impact of an engaged and committed student body, which, in the words of many of today's speechifiers, wants to make Yavneh Academy "the very best we can be." I couldn't have said it better myself!
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
Dr. P.

Yavneh in Review ~
Student Council Elections
Cyberbullying is NOT "lol"
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. BIG FAT LIE," said Roberta Clark, Community Director, North Texas/Oklahoma Regional Office at Anti-Defamation League. "Words can, and do hurt, and that hurt can often never be repaired."
Yavneh's ninth and tenth grade students participated in both lecture and interactive discussions during the anti-cyberbullying workshop directed by Ms. Clark and Yavneh's Counselor, Heather Behr. "We don't take away from class time without deep purpose and this is so important," said Head of School, Dr. David Portnoy adding it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help. "This program, about a subject not easy to discuss, is offered in the spirit of love and concern, and with the desire that our students know we are here and that we are here to help them, help others."
Ms. Clark told the students that "every, single thing" they do online is both permanent and public. "Cyberbullying never ends because once you put it up there, it's there," she said, noting that college and job applications, scholarship opportunities, and much more can be affected by what prospective decision-makers may find. "Many of the shootings at schools around the country were committed by people who were bullied themselves. We always hear from bystanders that 'we never thought it would happen here.' Unfortunately, these people hit their last point."
"The students at Yavneh really think, and they think deeply," said Ms. Clark who has spoken to students, parents, and faculty in previous years. Tuesday's seminar had groups reviewing possible scenarios of cyberbullying, then (a) identifying reasons for bullying, (b) discussing the impact and potential consequences for everyone involved, and (c) talking through and rewriting the scenario, determining alternatives that might incorporate positive conduct.
"Don't worry about being the 'tattler' if you think something is going on that might hurt another," said Ms. Clarke, reinforcing that Jewish tradition teaches us about l'shon harah, hitting the 'forward button' on gossip, and motzi shem ra, passing on information that we know isn't true. "We learn about how saving a life is to save the world. When a person murders another's reputation, it can't be fixed."
"Think about the times you've been most hurt, or most loved, and most of you will find it's a moment when someone spoke to you, or about you, in a mean or in a kind way." said Ms. Clark. "You don't have to like someone to treat them with dignity. You can't change the past but you can choose to be an ally, you can choose for it not to be acceptable to allow anyone to hurt another. Change your behavior and live your most thoughtful lives."

Senior Interns ~ Sam Coretz '13
Yavneh's seniors, who have made their mark on the community well before graduation, are deepening their connections by spending the last weeks of the school year interning through a variety of opportunities.
Sam Coretz, has just completed a five-week internship as an assistant teacher at the Tulsa GirlsArt School Project, Inc. in Oklahoma. He spent 30 hours a week teaching the art - of art, and learning the art of life.Students in the program not only create art, but they have the opportunity to sell their work with proceeds, allocated between the artist and the studio, allowing the artists to use their portion to purchase personal art supplies for home use, to pay competition fees or gallery entry fees, or to buy college savings bonds for their future studies.

"It's incredible and I loved every single minute," said Sam, who is teaching young ladies between the ages of 8 and 17, and who has been in Oklahoma for almost a month."We made each other laugh and I absolutely loved being with my girls. When we worked together I really tried to make them feel good about their work. I tried to explain that you can't start like a pro, but when we worked together, they felt better about whatever they were working on."

"Sam has been wonderful. He has a great ability to be empathetic and to jump into the girls' shoes and to relate to them," said Matt Moffett, director of the Project. "He is truly interested in the kids and he empowers them. That is a gift."
"I definitely learned something about teaching, without realizing it, while I was Yavneh," Sam said, referring to Monica Ribald's art classes."Mrs. Ribald totally helped me become a better artist and I love her for that because art brought me here."
Starting next week, Sam will be interning with the architectural firm of Jeremy W. Perkins Architects. We look forward to hearing, and seeing, the designs set for Sam's life!

Ali Feinstein '12, a member of the Championship Winning team in the 2013 National Hillel Basketball Tournament. Ali, a freshman at the University of Maryland, and former classmate and tournament participant Gabby Steinbrecher, a freshman at Washington University at St. Louis, both former members of the championship Yavneh Lady Bulldog Basketball team, met up the weekend of April 12.
"The tournament was founded by one of my UofM Classmates, Rachel Epstein, who had a vision to bring together Jews from all over for the largest Jewish college basketball experience. The tournament was centered around incorporating a 'Shabbat experience' into a basketball tournament." said Yavneh alumna, Jordana Weinberg '07 who, with former Bulldog, Bradley Alhadef '08, was on the Tournament's founding committee. "It was a privilege to help Rachel complete her vision. Our first tournament, in 2011, was a phenomenal weekend and it's amazing to see how it has grown and developed."

Jordana is now a P.E. and Tanach/Mishna teacher at Bornblum Solomon Schechter School in Memphis, TN. In the fall, she will attend the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel, a five-month program focusing on physical fitness, CPR/First Aid, and personal training. Bradley, who will graduate from the University of Maryland in December and then return to Dallas, continues to serve on the board of the Tournament, echoed Jordana's sentiments, adding he feels fortunate to have been involved from the beginning.
"Not only did I have the chance to play in the tournament, but I also was on the National Hillel Basketball tournament board; therefore I was able to help set up and make this event happen. Everyone on the board was incredible. They are such nice and devoted people. Brad Alhadef was also on the board.
"During the tournament, over Shabbat, I met tons of kids from other schools. We all relaxed, hung out and got to know each other," said Ali, who too serves on the National Hillel Basketball Tournament board, noting that NBA Commissioner David Stern welcomed everyone to the Tournament via video. "Right when Shabbat was over the basketball games began, and they lasted till 12am, Sunday morning, with games starting up again bright and early at 8am that day. It felt great to win, especially being a freshman, and next year we're thinking about making an alumni team."
Other Yavneh alumni cheering and playing in the Tournament were University of Maryland students Zoe Klein '09, Sarah Weiss '11, Miles Pulitzer '10, and David Kravitz '09, and Jared Katz '11 (University of Massachusetts/Amherst) and Jonathan Sulski '11 (Drexel University).
The tournament, which also serves as a fundraiser for participating Hillel chapters, has hosted teams from over 30 universities and is the first social gathering of its kind.
