From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

We are thrilled to welcome our seniors back from March of the Living! Their two weeks in Poland and Israel were filled with deep emotion and unique learning, and we are grateful for their healthy and safe return.  Thank

you to their chaperones - Pam Fine, Karen Zucker and Rabbi Tannenbaum - and special thanks to survivor Max Glauben for accompanying the students on their trip.  We are so happy to have them all

back in Dallas!

Emotions ran high all week here on campus, as we commemorated Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut, together with processing the tragic news from Boston and West, Texas. Not surprisingly, the first response here at Yavneh has been, "How can we help?"  Several efforts are underway here on campus as, once again, our students live out the well-learned lessons of Judaism and the importance of reaching out to those in need.

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,

Dr. P.

Class of 2013 - Elie Schramm
  "Yavneh is: Motivating.  Supportive. Caring."

Elie Schramm defines Yavneh Academy as "motivating, supportive, and caring."  A mirror image it would seem as this student, doubled as a teacher this year, and his students look at him with the same honor.

"Elie was able to balance being our friend and our teacher all at once,"  said Freshman, Risa Mond.  "He knew when to be serious and when we could have small talk in the class."

"Elie structured the class around us and he would ask us what would help us learn better whether it was doing projects, skits, or taking turns reading out loud and having group discussions," said Risa. "In the hallway he has also always treated us like a friend, saying hi and always smiling."

Elie joined Tamar Cohen '13 as one of two student teachers this year, leading the Oral Law class to Yavneh's Freshmen and Sophomores.   "I got a lot out of being a teacher and I really enjoyed it," said Elie, who realized he too was learning as he taught.  "I got to write and give tests and when the students worked hard, I could see that they listened and took the class seriously."

"It was a lot of responsibility on my shoulders because if I don't do my own homework, which is rare, I'm the only one who is affected," said Elie.  "There's no way I could not get ready for the class because the students were counting on me.  It really was a great experience."

A graduate of Akiba Academy, Elie transferred to Yavneh from Texas Torah Institute at the start of his Junior year, wanting to continue preparing for college in a Jewish environment with a community of friends he was close to.  A Commended Student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, Elie was accepted to Brandeis University, University of Maryland (Honors College), Washington University/St. Louis, Yeshivat Eretz Hatzvi, Yeshivat Lev HaTorah, Yeshivat Reishit and to Yeshiva University (Honors Program).  In the fall he will begin his post-high school career studying at Yeshiva Eretz HaTzvi in Jerusalem, before returning to attend a university in the U.S.

"The best part about Yavneh for me is probably the relaxed atmosphere, the freedoms, and the responsibility given to students," said Elie.  "Many of my peers welcomed me right away and taught me how things run at Yavneh in a very short time. They were there for me and, along with the faculty, were very kind and patient."

"Elie came to my PreCalculus class as a Junior and he certainly adjusted well, worked very hard, and received the Math Award at the end of the year," said Veronica Thomas, Yavneh Math Department Chair.  "He is an excellent student and I am confident that he will continue to be very successful."

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Elie and his family moved to Dallas when he was 12-years-old.  The son of Bonnie and Eric, and brother to Leora and Michael, Elie has volunteered with the Jewish Family Service Food Bank, he is a member at Congregation Ohr Hatorah and also Congregation Shaare Tefilla, where he serves as a Gabbai during the Shabbos Mincha services.

A member of the Yavneh Bulldog Basketball team, Elie has also participated as a crew member of the Theatre Department's production of "The Secret Garden," and as an actor in this year's "Epic Adventures in a Rinky Dink Art Museum" and as an attorney on the school's Mock Trial team.

A constant on the Mock Trial team, Elie found it "so logical," he said.  "It taught me how to present an argument, from either side, in a cogent manner.  It was very structured and I learned a great deal that I know I will use in my education and in whatever career I follow."

"Elie is the epitome of that old phrase 'a scholar and a gentleman,'" said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward.  "He has a first-rate mind and is an excellent student across-the-board, as well-mannered and personable as any high school student I have ever met.  Elie has constantly impressed me with both his conduct and his academic performance."

Motivating, supportive, and caring.

  Yes, a mirror image indeed.

Yavneh in Review ~

Yom HaZikaron & Yom HaAtzmaut

Yavneh students and faculty commemorated Yom HaZikaron, Israeli Memorial Day and Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, with reverence and respect, with rejoicing and ruach.

On Monday, a screening of "Follow Me: The Yoni Netanyahu Story" was screened following a meaningful series of prayers and poetry shared by Rabbi Michael Friedman, Jacob Herstein '15, Lexi Riche '14, Associate Principal/Judaic Programming - Naomi Schrager, and Dania Tanur '14.  Avi Bracha visited a number of classes sharing his own experience in the Yom Kippur War.

All present stopped for a moment, as is done in Israel, with a siren to remember the more than 23,000 lives lost; those members of the Israel Defense Force and the innocents lost to acts of terrorism.

"The connection to Israel is so important because it gives us strength.  Without it, Judaism in the Diaspora would not be the same," said Dorit Bracha, Hebrew Department Chair, who coordinated the days' programming, sharing too a video called "Im Yesh Gan Eden, If There Is A Paradise."    "When we remember and appreciate what we have because in the death of those who passed, they gave us our life."

On Tuesday, flags waved, historical projects about Israel's 65 years were exhibited, and a Yavneh Family Israeli-style picnic was shared."

Just 65 years ago Israel didn't exist and that's amazing," said Mrs. Bracha.  "We try to bring to Yavneh, the best we can, a bit of the flavor of Israel.  In addition to the celebration, teaching how the country was established is very important."

"It's incredible that these two holidays are celebrated back-to-back - it really emphasizes the sadness of loss and the joy of the building of the country," said Lexi Riche '14.  "I love that being at Yavneh we share the mentality that is really concerned about Israel and what it means to us as Jews.  It's a good thing to be able to nurture that and that doesn't happen at most schools."

March of the Living 2013 ~

Welcome Home!!! Yavneh's March of the Living participants have returned home safe and sound, with a most meaningful experience - hearts and spirits both pulled and filled with joy.

Yavneh's Students Against Terrorism/Points for Peace co-presidents this year, Rachel Goodman and Kelly Herson, had the honor, with their travelers, to meet with representatives of Zaka, the beneficiary of $48,000 from this year's basketball tournament.  Click here to see a brief exchange and be part of the moment.

In Israel for Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut, the participants were up close and oh, so personal to the land we call Home.

From MOL Leader, Pam Fine, earlier this week:

Our group toured Acco's old city, the 400 year old Ramhal's Shul, we observed the two-minute siren for Yom Hazikaron, traveled to Independence Hall in Tel Aviv, toured the Carmel Market, and celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut on Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda Street with thousands of others.

We participated in a second March of the Living, this time with much joy, marching from Safra Square in downtown Jerusalem to the Kotel.  Led by drummers and much fanfare, thousands assembled at the Kotel Plaza, where our very own Rabbi Tannenbaum was honored with leading everybody in saying Sh'ma.

Afterwards we toured the City of David excavations and attended Israel's Mega-Event and MOL Closing Ceremonies at Latrun, the site of a famous 1948 battle and current home of the Armored Corps Memorial.  As our tour came to an end, we visited the  Knesset, the Supreme Court, Har Herzl and we enjoyed a closing dinner in a Bedouin tent.

Keep in touch with Yavneh's March of the Living participants as they share in an experience of a lifetime.  Visit http://moldallas.blogspot.com to read reports from students and our chaperones.
