Chag Sameach from Yavneh Academy of Dallas

From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,
One of the wonderful aspects of school life is the ability to celebrate a wide range of experiences with young adults at various stages of their maturity and growth.
This week our 12th grade students completed their academic work (Yashar Koach!) in anticipation of the Pesach holiday and their trip-of-a-lifetime to Poland and Israel on the March of the Living. As I told our terrific seniors following their final Mincha of the year, we at Yavneh are so grateful for their student leadership, their kindness, and their friendship. We promise to keep you posted on their continued learning and success right up through graduation!
At the other end of the student spectrum, we this week hand-delivered acceptance packages to the students we hope will join us as our incoming freshman class next fall. Each package, lovingly delivered by a current Yavneh upperclassman, included a Yavneh Class of 2017 T-shirt, Passover sweets and a Yavneh lanyard/keychain with their letter of acceptance. Each of the boys was given a Yavneh kippah when they visited our campus, and one new freshman, whose yarmulke was lost on the Levine Academy's wonderful 8th grade class trip to Israel, was supplied with a fresh kippah (with built-in clips, naturally ;o).
So, as we begin our drawn-out farewell to the Class of 2013, and welcome a bumper crop of freshmen to the Class of 2017, we are filled with gratitude and optimism for Yavneh's blessed history and promising future.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom and a Chag Kasher v Sameach,
~~ Dr. P

Class of 2013 - Kayley Romick "Yavneh is : Supportive. Special. Memorable."
Kayley, a graduate of the Levine Academy, with a desire to continue her Jewish education in tandem with a strong General Studies program. "Yavneh's supportive environment was another pull factor for me and the school surpassed my every expectation," she said. "I really love it, and the person I've grown to be, because of its influence."
"Attending Yavneh makes it so easy to love school," said Kayley. "The curriculum is thought-provoking; I get to explore my interests with diverse extracurricular activities, and I enjoy the intersection of Judaic and secular material."
"Kayley is one of those students that teachers cannot wait to teach," said Associate Principal/Judaic Programming, Naomi Schrager. "She is motivated, bright, inquisitive, thoughtful and spunky. She approaches all new material with an incredible charisma and wants to understand it from different angles before moving on."
"I greatly admire Kayley's thirst for knowledge and commitment to intellectual integrity. She is always eager to learn new perspectives and she is willing to challenge her own viewpoints and opinions in light of new ideas."
"Kayley is one of my all-time favorite students!," said Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward. "She is smart-as-a-whip and as enthusiastic about life as anybody I have ever worked with. She is incredibly versatile; excellent in Judaic studies, very accomplished in all the core General Studies courses, she plays electric ukulele, and I particularly love the idea that she is already a serious and accomplished poet. She even enjoys re-writing!!"
Accepted to Texas A&M, the University of Georgia, University of Texas/Plan II Honors, and Vanderbilt University, Kayley, has so appreciated her own education, and the teachers with whom she has studied, plans to major in Cognitive Studies, at Vanderbilt, hoping to one day be a teacher. A participant in Yavneh's Students4Students mentoring program, she is comfortable at a desk assisting a child with their math homework, or cuddled in a cubicle for reading support.
"You have to know how to read because it makes you smart," said one of Kayley's "friends" at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet. "I like when Miss Kayley helps me because she's really nice and she makes it lots of fun."
In addition to her supportive teachers and the staff at Yavneh, Kayley will long hold tight to the relationships she made and fostered while in high school. "I love my friends! We always support each other, collaborate often and look past little things to avoid drama," she said. "Whenever I feel burnt out, or down, I know I'll feel better after talking with one of them and they know they can come to me, too."
Kayley, a member of BBYO's Wadel chapter, served four terms on the chapter's board. She was a Gerald Klein/Jewish Family Service Intern, servicing the children of Bea's Kids. She is a two-time finalist with the Dallas Library Express Yourself Poetry Contest, and a recipient of a Scholastic Art & Writing SW Regional Gold Key Award. A devoted Camp Young Judaea camper - she's worked as a CIT and looks forward to returning this year as a counselor.
Tapped by Dr. Cloward as a "poster child for extracurricular activity involvement," Kayley has participated in Mock Trial, Music Ensemble, Theatre, Students4Students, Lady Bulldog Soccer, as a reporter for The Bulldog Print, and as a Student Ambassador.
Kayley has served near and far, giving her passport a workout. She's visited Brazil, on an international peace and cultural exchange program through the Children's International Summer Villages, also representing our community on a summer trip to Hungary and Israel, a participant, on the Jewish Agency for Israel sponsored Partnership With Israel Tri-Teen Summer Program, based at Camp Szarvas.
A Dallas native, Kayley is the daughter of Shani and Jeff and the sister of Serina '15 and Zac '15. A member of Congregation Anshai Torah, Kayley is an assistant in CAT's second grade Sunday School class. "I love that I'm giving positive Jewish experiences and knowledge to potential community leaders," said Kayley. "I love that my parents made a Jewish education a priority for us. I believe that by attending Levine and Yavneh, I am more cognizant of the richness of our religion and our culture."
With a smile as vivid as sunshine, a depth as intent as can be, and a heart as beautiful as the tunes she plays on the piano or her ukulele, Kayley's future, and that of the students, and all others, she will touch, will be bright.

Yavneh in Review
The Yavneh Alumni Association kicked off its resurgence with a visit to the Dallas Museum of Art, led by Yavneh's own art teacher, and resident talent beyond definition, Monica Ribald. The former students were joined by Mrs. Ribald, her husband and Yavneh Bulldog Assistant Coach, Max, Head of School Dr. David Portnoy.
" It was wonderful to be with our alums," said Art teacher Monica Ribald, who has been teaching at Yavneh for close to a decade. "They recognized me before I could each of them! It was wonderful to be with the kids who are now able to appreciate the beauty for the sake of art, not just for a grade."
"It was a great first opportunity for our alumni to come together and I look forward to having more kids come back - especially those who care to mention how much I 'haven't changed!."
Alumni Charlie Saginaw '07 coordinated last Sunday's event. "I enjoyed reconnecting with old friends from Yavneh and the chance listen to Monica speak about one of her favorite Jewish artists, Marc Chagall." said Charlie. "She is so knowledge about about his artistic technique and his influence from the shtetl -- her explanation even grabbed the attention of art patrons, who were not associated with Yavneh, across the room! Good art and good friends, what's not to like?"
Charlie, Grace Rosenthal '08, and Eric Axel '98 are working together to make the YAA a success. Be sure to visit to be in touch with the YAA on Facebook, for event information (including a pre-Pesach party this weekend) and to reconnect with your former classmates.
