From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

The Dallas Kosher Chili Cook Off is unlike any community gathering I've seen.  And while Yavneh did not win one of the coveted medals for our outstanding product - though ours was clearly the best - last Sunday's annual event at Tiferet was a terrific day for Jews from across Dallas to celebrate together in the spirit of Klal Yisrael (the community of Israel).

Speaking of products, our Yavneh Alumni comprise an exceptional group of young people. With some pursuing study in Israel, others at the undergraduate and graduate level - and others already engaged in careers in business, law, medicine and community building - meeting and greeting Yavneh Alumni is one of the best parts of my job.

This Sunday, thanks to the planning efforts of Charlie Saginaw '07 and Grace Rosenthal '08, Yavneh Alumni will gather at the Dallas Museum of Art to enjoy the current Chagall exhibit. All grads: check our Alumni Facebook page for more details.  Thanks to art teacher Monica Ribald for her work in preparation of Sunday!

And yes, today was Color War - in the words of one of our senior captains, "the most important thing you will do at Yavneh" ;o) Yashar koach to all our Red and Black scholar-athlete participants - Go Red! Go Black!

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom.

~~ Dr. P

From the Judaic Studies department  ~

The family that has built a community for many of Yavneh's alumnae at Chabad of A&M

made a visit to campus this week, hosted by Justine Berman '12 and Zoe Elewitz '11.

Rebbetzin Manya and Rabbi Yossi Lazaroff spoke to interested students, introducing

them too to their little ones; Label, Lazer, Levi, Menachem, Menucha, and Mussia.

"The Chabad at Texas A&M has become my home away from home after moving to College Station," said Justine who is Chabad A&M's Vice President, while studying Animal Sciences.  "I picked Texas A&M because of the Lazaroff family and the strong Judaic atmosphere they encourage. Chabad is a place for Shabbos and meeting Jews, a place of learning and growing. Soup when you are sick and words of encouragement are great and go a long way when you are away from home."

We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah in this week's Snappy Sentiments and that you'll share and discuss them at your Shabbat table.

Circle your calendars - Spring Shabbaton is April 26 & 27!  More info to follow.

   Shabbat Shalom ~

Class of 2013 - Bradley Riche
"Yavneh is:  Bizarre. Unexplainable. Marvelous."

If it please the court, the Yavneh Family court, we introduce - no doubt an exceptional lawyer in the making.

Bradley and his family; parents Jodi and Saul, and his siblings Lexi '14, Ashley, and Brandon, moved to Dallas from Boca Raton, Florida at the start of his Freshman year. After receiving former Head of School, Mr. O'Quinn's cell phone number at the end of that meeting, Bradley says he was told to call and explain why he wanted to be at Yavneh.

"That was that single act that fully convinced

me that I should attend Yavneh," said Bradley.

"I enjoy the school because it has given me control over my education. Whenever I've ever had any concerns, questions, or suggestions all I've had to do is walk into the office and the matter is always sorted out."

"Bradley, by his own admission is not a student of biology but he certainly acted as if it was the only subject he thought about all of last year   (of course this may because Bradley never met an intellectual argument he could refuse)," said Dr. Steven Goldfine, Chair of Yavneh's Science department. "He is a classical Jewish intellectual in the making -- always up-for a challenge, always logical in his approach and always fun to deal with."

"Yavneh's students are successful because of the dual curriculum," said Bradley. "By balancing both Judaic and General Studies, we learn to think differently and to apply the concepts we have learned in our Judaic classes to our General Studies."

"Bradley has a voracious appetite for knowledge which sometimes seems unquenchable. He is inquisitive and an extremely hard worker," said former Judaic Studies and Math faculty member, Rabbi Maury Grebenau. "Bradley has thought about the larger questions and there is nothing he loves more than to debate these issues with friends and teachers. He feels strongly about his Jewish identity and his drive and work ethic give him the potential to be a great Jewish leader."

"The best part about Yavneh is that the students build relationships with the teachers and, as peers, it might be strange but I can always depend on my friends to get me in to weird and sometimes awkward situations," said Bradley. "Of course, we also depend on each other to get out of those situations. It was amazing to me that I could grow up somewhere else but never did I feel like the 'new kid,' once we moved here."

With his family, Bradley attends Congregation Shaare Tefilla, and he is a member of the National Council of Synagogue Youth. At Yavneh, in addition to his success as a four-year attorney through Mock Trial, Bradley has served as a Layout Editor for The Bulldog Print, he's played on the Bulldog Tennis Team, been a member of Helping Everyone Live Peacefully, and an actor in Yavneh's Theatre productions of "The Secret Garden," and "Epic Adventures in a Rinky Dink Art Museum." With his sister Lexi, he founded Kidz Korner, an organization that each year collects stuffed animals and gifts for the patients of Medical City Children's Hospital.

Bradley has spent his summer vacations participating in Gloria Shields Publications Workshops, as a Gerald Klein Jewish Family Service Intern working with the March of Dimes Regional Office, and as an intern for attorney, and former YavnehDad, Rick Cohen.

With plans to become an attorney - he's had great training as one of the captains of Yavneh's Mock Trial team - Bradley has already been accepted to the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and the University of Miami. "Mock Trial has been a lot of fun and a great experience, but foremost it's taught me how to think on my feet, and how to present. Warren, Rick, and Harry have all been great examples and given me opportunities that I don't think would have been available at any other school."

Bradley, who lives by honor, will certainly take his Yavneh training into the courtrooms of his future. You can be certain that when he does, the scales of justice will weigh true.

Yavneh in Review

AIPAC entourage ~

Yavneh was well represented at the recent conference of AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, in Washington, DC. Bulldogs Gary Levine '14,

Dalya Romaner '14, Gaby Schultz '16, Mika Stein '13, and

Adam Steinbrecher '14, made the trek representing our school and our

Yavneh Family, alongside more than 200 other Dallas-area supporters.

Our extended Yavneh Family too represented through Eric Axel '98, currently serving as AIPAC's Southwest Regional Political Director, Dalit Agronin '12, and YavnehDad

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions, and Gaby Schultz

Andy Schultz who made it a priority to introduce some of our students to AIPAC and what it means to be connected.

"It is more important than ever for Israel to have young adults who are well educated on the importance of the US - Israel relationship.  Just as important, our high school students need to be prepared as college students to effectively confront anti-Israel sentiments on many college campuses," said Mr. Schultz, who has been a supporter of AIPAC for more than 10 years. Four years a member of the Dallas Executive Committee, he too serves on the organization's Outreach Sub-Committee.

"Through my involvement I've come to realize how important it is for the next generation to educate themselves on how our government works so they will maximize pro-Israel advocacy, among other issues over the course of their lifetimes."

Of the 13,000 attendees to this year's conference, more than 2000 were high school and college students.

"Attending AIPAC was a goal I hoped to reach," said Gaby. "I learned about the bond between Israel and America, and how to educate my friends at school

about AIPAC. It truly was an experience that I will never forget and, the chance to speak up as I did, is something I want to pass on to my peers. I'm proud to say that I am a part of AIPAC and I hope to get my Yavneh classmates involved too."

"I went to AIPAC to learn more about the issues going on in Israel today," said Gary, who with Mika and Adam attended on behalf of our NTO/BBYO Region. "The experience itself has inspired me to be more involved in current events that I was before and to lobby my own state representatives to support Pro-Israel bills and organizations."

"I learned how valuable Israel is to the world in technology, religion, military and politics," said Dalya who with her Yavneh peers found themselves in memorable meetings with Ehud Barak, Ambassador Michael Oren, Pete Sessions, Daniel Gold (the creator of the Iron Dome), and many other AIPAC leaders. "Everyone we met with signified how pro-Israel our American government is, which made me feel very proud to be a Jew living in this country."

"AIPAC was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life as a

Jewish-American teenager," said Adam. "I attended sessions that included information about the Iron Dome: A Revolution in Missile Defense, America's Role in the Middle East Today, The Muslim Brotherhood: Its Origin and Ideology, The Iranian Nuclear File, and Lobby Workshops. It was incredible to hear in-depth explanations of these subjects from the experts themselves."

"I had the chance to lobby, addressing my District Congressman, Pete Sessions, about issues imperative to the safety of Israel," said Adam. "We addressed sequestration and

its effect on Israel, the Iranian nuclear crisis, and the strengthening of the United

States-Israel relationship through the declaration of Israel as a strategic partner, which would include intelligence sharing, iron dome funding, and the establishment of a joint cyber-security center."

"We hear about it all the time and we have been learning in school about how important Israel is to America, and vice versa, so we wanted to get involved and learn why it is so important," said Dalya, excited to attend her first conference, and to learn more about the organization her family has long been supportive of. "I spent a lot of time speaking with congressmen, who all believe that the relationship between America and Israel is vitally important. They made it clear that my activism, and that of my peers, will lead the next generation in supporting the America-Israel relationship."
