From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
The hallways at Yavneh have been filled with even more ruach (spirit) than usual this week, as we welcomed the Jewish month of Adar. Student voices singing "Mi she nichnas Adar..." echoed throughout the campus, as the Jewish people are commanded to be happy this month! (This also explains the large dancing pink rabbit and Rabbi Friedman playing his guitar in every classroom and office on campus ;o)
Whatever the time of year, we are so happy to welcome guests to Yavneh, and this month is no exception. Together with the Center for Jewish Education, we are hosting a number of Learning Fest speakers, and sponsored a powerful film on Anti-Semitism that has informed audiences around the world - Jewish and non-Jewish alike.
As we head into Presidents' Weekend, we wish our Girls Basketball Team and all our BBYO delegates and candidates safe and happy travels to and from Miami and DC.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
~~ Dr. P

Shabbat Shalom ~
A guest of the Center for Jewish Education's LearningFest 2013, Rabbi Bentzion Kravitz, Founder of Jews for Judaism International, Inc and Executive Director of the Los Angeles branch of Jews for Judaism, spoke with Yavneh's student this morning - a return engagement for the rabbi whose program has one of the highest success records in the Jewish community for counseling Jews involved in cults and Christian missionary groups. The Mission of Jews for Judaism is to strengthen and preserve Jewish identity through education and counseling that counteracts deceptive proselytizing targeting Jews for conversion.
A renowned lecturer (and former University of Texas student), Rabbi Kravitz has appeared on both television and radio programs and has lectured extensively throughout the United States, the former Soviet Union, South Africa, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Israel.
Rabbi Kravitz spoke on the question of Is Religion Killing Judaism, examining some of the negative stereotypes that people have about religion and how Judaism suffers by association. Rabbi Kravitz addressed the ideas of today's preference for spirituality over religion, the sentiment that religion is "crutch for those who need it" and the contention that religions divide people, causing strife in the world.
Rabbi Kravitz, author of The Jewish Response To Missionaries, which has been published in English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and German, is also a Chaplain and Critical Incident Counselor for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Established in 1983, Jews for Judaism's preventative education is a catalyst that inspires the revitalization of the spiritual life of Jews and Judaism and at the same time inoculates the Jewish community from external influences. The organization provides a wide variety of counseling services, along with education, and outreach programs that enable Jews of all ages to rediscover and strengthen their Jewish heritage.
*** In conjunction with LearningFest, at Congregation Shaare Tefilla, on Saturday, February 16, at 11am, Rabbi Kravitz will address "Presentation: Missionary Impossible: The Jewish Response to Missionaries."
At 4:30pm, sponsored by Karen & Michael Zucker, in memory of Vivian Zucker, Rabbi Kravitz will speak about "The Power of Persuasion: What Do Cults, Telemarketers, and Terrorists Have in Common?"
On Sunday, February 17 at 9am, at the Aaron Family JCC, Rabbi Kravitz's program, sponsored by Jo-Ann Rosen, will feature the topic of "Kabbalah and the Red String: Cult or Consciousness?"
To register for LearningFest 2013, visit LearningFest.org
Many thanks and much appreciation to DATA/Dallas Area Torah Association, and its Dean (and Alumni Yavneh parent), RabbiYerachmiel Fried, for coordinating last week's visit by Rebbetzin Rachel and Dayan (Judge) Rav Ehrentreu. "We were thrilled to have the opportunity of achdut, of community building, and we were happy to have this chance to work together," said Rabbi Fried.
"We were happy to see many Yavneh students and parents come to hear the Rav over Shabbat, with reports from parents of how much their children appreciated what Rav Ehrentreu had to teach. He made a strong impact here and it's a very nice feeling to be building that kind of connection with Yavneh and Dallas' greater Jewish community."
*********
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah in this week's Snappy Sentiments and that you'll share and discuss them at your Shabbat table. Please be sure to circle your calendars, and to RSVP by Tuesday, February 19 - to info@yavnehdallas.org for our February 23 Purim Megillah reading, dinner, and Senior '13 Shpiel! We hope to celebrate with our whole Yavneh Family.
Shabbat Shalom ~
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Class of 2013 ~~ Clara Moskowitz
"Yavneh is: Comforting. Engaging. Unique."
Clara transferred to Yavneh after her Freshman year at J.J. Pearce High School - the younger sister of Yavneh Alumni Daniel '10 and Zac '08. "During my Freshman year, I felt that something was missing from my high school experience. After spending so many years at Solomon Schechter (now the Ann & Nate Levine Academy), I realized I wanted the Judaic classes and close community that Yavneh has.
"Coming back to Jewish day school was amazing because I got to rekindle those relationships that were hard to maintain in public school while also becoming very close with the students who had come from Akiba and other schools. The Jewish education we share is a unique character at Yavneh and it's truly what I wanted in a high school."
"I've enjoyed that the subjects and the themes of our Judaic classes are universal and I think that, by the afternoon, our brains are geared up to then absorb the secular subjects," said Clara. "Yavneh has taught me how to manage my time, how to appropriately communicate with authority figures, and how to always remember my roots."
Accepted to the University of Maryland (College Park Scholars), the University of Miami, the University of Michigan, Northeastern University, and Tulane University, it's the blue and gold of Michigan that Clara will cheer for! First though, before pursuing a career in medicine or psychology, Clara plans to spend next year, a participant of the Young Judaea YearCourse program. A "lifer" of Camp Young Judaea, Tel Yehuda, and Machon Leadership (in Israel) summer programs, Clara says "I've been involved in Young Judaea's Zionist youth movement since the third grade and want to deepen my involvement in Israel."
"Clara is just a gem! She is very bright at mathematics, is hard-working and has a smile that just fills the room with joy," said Math teacher, Nikki Friedman. "Not only is Clara talented in math, but I have watched her help other students overcome their math challenges as well. She is enthusiastic about learning and very motivated to succeed."
A Dallas native, Clara is the daughter of Cindy and Mitch. An involved member of Congregation Anshai Torah, Clara has also been very involved in the B'nai Brith Youth Organization - both for her Jennie Zesmer BBG #300 chapter, and as NTO Regional Sh'lica, in charge of Judaic programming, community service, and social action. She's led services at Town Village North Dallas where she said "I developed some very special relationships. It doesn't take long to make people smile!"
"Clara is one of the most dedicated students I have ever taught," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum. "Clara comes to class very day ready and willing to learn. She always displays a genuine and authentic interest in not simply achieving good grades but in learning new material and integrating her new found knowledge in her life. Clara continuously seeks to grow not just for herself, but in order to become a serious dedicated leader. To that goal, she is well on her way."
At Yavneh, Clara made the courts her home during her Sophomore and Junior years - the Lady Bulldog Basketball and Tennis courts - while also being involved in the school's Hashinui/Environmental Club, Spirit Club, and Students Against Terrorism.
"Senior year has been filled with unforgettable memories, random shenanigans, and complete happiness," said Clara. "The best part is reflecting back upon my experience here at Yavneh. I have grown so much (not physically...) and I have a deep appreciation for the home Yavneh has given me. As I start my next chapter, I will carry within me the gift of my Yavneh experience."
The gifts that you've received Clara, have shot back to all of us like a boomerang. The gift of the experience of a trio of Moskowitz students - with you as the closure, is a lasting gift indeed.

The Week in Review
Adar brings joy and a fuzzy pink bunny to Yavneh!
MiShe Nichnas Adar Marbim Bisimcha was heard through the halls this week as Rabbi Michael Friedman strummed his way through the halls, accompanied by silly hats and a goofy gaggle of gigglers and singers, bringing the joy of Adar to our classrooms and offices!
Eliezra Ben Yehuda Kassutto ~
Eliezra Ben Yehuda Kassutto, granddaughter of the father of modern Hebrew, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, visited our campus on Monday, sharing the history of her family, stories of her own life, and engaging students, faculty, and guests of the Center for Jewish Learning's LearningFest 2013.
"Hebrew is a living language and it's always changing," said Mrs. Kassutto, whose visit was sponsored by Debra Polsky, in honor of Leslie & Howard Schultz. "The language that is of my family came to me through the stories of my family. My father and my grandmother were incredible storytellers, and I am a storyteller. From my father, sometimes I didn't know where the truth ended and the story began."
Mrs. Kassutto spoke of how she left Israel for New York as a 16-year-old venturing out to realize who she was - other than the legacy of Ben Yehuda. "It took me some time but I wanted to find what I was good at, and who I was, other than his granddaughter," she said. "What I realize now is that it took me many more years to find that. It wasn't until 1989, when I was the victim of a terrorist attack on a bus in Israel, that I found how to appreciate my heritage. It was in the eight years of recovery of that attack - of physical, emotional, and really all over - that I came to love and appreciate who I am."
Mrs. Kassutto spoke of how Eliezer, who lived from 1881 to 1922 and who established the Hebrew Academy and Hebrew University, was introduced to grammar as a young child - the first time he knew of something other than Biblical Hebrew. He read books of Robinson Caruso and others - then "secret" books and forbidden by his family. Ben Yehuda left his own family and was taken in by another who would teach him and become the start of his own future family.
"My grandfather taught Hebrew from the Bible but he also invented words," said Mrs. Kassutto, who told of the Ben Yehuda dictionary which was 17 volumes, only six at the time of his death. "He set the stage and taught how and why words were used in the Bible, and how they should be used in life. He taught context, not wanting people to memorize words without knowing their true meaning. He felt that Hebrew was more than a way to communicate with God, but also a way for people to communicate with each other."
Yavneh's Art Department - A Great Investment ~
Congratulations to Yavneh's budding artists, whose work remains on display at the BBVA Compass Bank at Preston Road & Forest Lane. Student advocate, and art teacher extraordinaire, Monica Ribald, invited the bank to share her student's work with the community. "I think it's beautiful that the bank supports Yavneh and our kids," said Mrs. Ribald. "The kids work hard and I love that people in the community are getting to see what we produce here. It's really lovely and I hope our Yavneh Family will support the kids too by going by the bank and taking a look. Tell your friends!" "We've had great responses from our customers and we're excited to have such beautiful drawings and paintings around us," said Jennifer Sauls, BBVA Branch Manager. "We've known Monica for quite awhile, and we appreciate her business. We're proud to be able to host her student's work. It's been a gift to us." Yavneh's Art Gallery at BBVA Compass Bank will remain on display through February 22.

Also available in the vending machine are numerous flavors of Vitamin Water and other tasty - and healthy - drink choices.
"I really think that kids should start eating healthier b but without the healthier choices, it's hard to do without leaving campus," said Sophie Lynn '15, who lobbied for the new machine. "I really like all the drinks that are in there and my favorite snack is the Cheddar PoP Chips! Everyone seems to really be liking it so far and it is a big hit!"
