From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Picture this: It's 5 o'clock PM, and after a long day of Judaic and General Studies, our Boys Varsity Basketball Team (26-5) is called to a special meeting by Coach Zimmerman. What is it for? No, it's not to watch game film (that came later), nor was it to stretch, lift weights, or practice their all-important free throws.
No, this special meeting was a team visit to the BBVA Compass Bank at Preston-Forest, where our Yavneh student artists have filled the lobby with their paintings and drawings, completed under the expert tutelage of our wonderful art teacher (and fine artist) Monica Ribald.
We see this student-to-student support wherever we look at Yavneh. Whether it's our newspaper staff attending a big game, or our theater kids helping with an important Tikkun Olam project (Points for Peace is March 3 - mark your calendar!), we are blessed with a school culture where students not only attend activities outside of their own specific interests ... they celebrate each other!
Many thanks to all of you who supported our "Rinky Dink Art Museum" production, who will read today's issue of The Bulldog Print (with its incredibly touching cover story about siblings with special needs - see also this video put out by Yachad LA (Yachad LA: Spread the Word to End the Word), and who visit our campus regularly to attend games, serve on committees, and shuttle your kids back and forth from home.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
~~ Dr. P

Shabbat Shalom ~
Yavneh's students and faculty were honored this morning by a visit from Rebbetzin Rachel and Dayan (Judge) Rav Ehrentreu, one of the preeminent spokesmen for Judaism of European Jewry, presently serves as Av Beis Din (Chief Justice) of the Rabbinical Court of Greater Europe.
Dayan Ehrentreu previously served as Chief Justice to the High Ecclesiastical Court (Beis Din) of London from 1984-2008, during which time he also served as adviser on medical ethics to the Chief Rabbi of England. Dayan Ehrentreu, who in Cologne, bestowed rabbinical ordination to the first graduating class of orthodox German rabbis since the Holocaust, also served as Chief Justice to the Ecclesiastical Court of Manchester and Principle/Dean of the Academy for Advanced Rabbinical Studies in Sutherland.
A guest to the Center for Jewish Education's LearningFest 2013, Dayan Ehrentrau spoke of how one define's one life - how one will be evaluated, by what one does, or by who one is.
In B'reishit (25-28) we read of how Yitzchok said he loved his son (using the past tense) Esav for the hunter he was, and Rivka loves (using the present tense) her son Yaakov.
"In a secular society, people are often judged by what they do, what is their career; a lawyer, a doctor, an actuary - those with 'menial' careers are seen as not as important," said Dayan Ehrentreu. "In a religious society, it doesn't matter what you DO, but who you are - that you are kind, giving of character, one who thinks of others. THAT is a great person."
"Esav represents the secular society, and Yaakov, the religious. Rivka didn't love her son for what he did, careers come and go - she loved him for who he was. That, for most of us remains a constant."
"The Almighty created billions of people, with billions of fingerprints - we each have our own mission to fulfill," said Dayan Ehrentreu. "No one has the same features, we all have our own qualities - use yours to define you, use yours to define who you will be."
"On Rosh Chodesh we read the blessing of 'chaim sheh yesh bahem yirat shemayim v'yirat chait,' 'G-d give us the surroundings conducive to fear G-d and fear sin," said the Rav. "We also then read 'chaim sheteheivanu ... yirat shemayim,' 'God give us a life where we have the fear of G-d and doing sin.' There is only the slightest of difference but here, at Yavneh, you are blessed to learn in surroundings where your teachers give you the how and what to learn. When you go out into the world, you may not find all circumstances as such, and so we pray to be blessed that it should be within each of us."
*** In conjunction with LearningFest, Dayan Ehrentrau will be speaking at Congregation Ohr Hatorah at 11:30am on Saturday, February 9, and on Sunday, February 10, at 9:45am, at the Aaron Family JCC.
Rebbetzin Ehrentrau will be speaking, on Saturday, February 9 at 4:30pm at a private residence (contact 214.987.3282 or email datanet@sbcglobal.net for details) To register for LearningFest 2013, visit LearningFest.org

Class of 2013 ~~ Shea Miller
"Yavneh is: Caring Community. Challenging. Unique."

A graduate of Akiba Academy, Shea chose to attend Yavneh for its "stimulating Jewish education and caring teachers. I enjoyed being here because of the limitless opportunities available and absolutely for the chance to be around my awesome friends."
Appreciating Yavneh's dual-curriculum, Shea believes Yavneh creates a student centered environment where teachers always accessible and willing to help and that students succeed by prioritizing their tasks and learning.
"Because of all of the freedom that Yavneh allows, it's important to learn to use your time wisely and I believe we do gain those skills," said Shea. "I have a good relationship with most of my classmates and we often form study groups where we help each other out, filling in information for each other, and explaining things into more understandable terms for one another. Working together creates a friendly and non-competitive atmosphere."
"Shea is a bright presence who is deceptively intelligent," said former Math and Judaic faculty staff member, Rabbi Maury Grebenau. "She immediately strikes you as a sweet and easygoing person who has fun with life, but what takes most longer to realize is that Shea is also a hard worker and someone who has real thought out goals which she is constantly marching towards."
Jewish pride will serve her well as she heads out of Yavneh's doors into the world."
"Shea is always smiling and a natural born mathematician," said Math department Chair, Veronica Thomas who taught Shea's Algebra 2 , Geometry, PreCalculus and BC Calculus courses. "She works hard, is conscientious, very helpful and she always gets along well with her classmates. I'm certain that if she applies herself in college, as she has at Yavneh, she will be extremely successful in college."
Accepted to Indiana University, Texas A&M, University of Georgia, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin, Shea hopes to follow in her parent's mathematically inclined footsteps, as commercial real estate financier and CPA, as she walks her own career path.
Shea has spent summers studying Geometry, preparing for her SAT exams, as both camper and staffer at Camp Sabra in Rocky Mount MO., working as a lifeguard and retail associate, and traveling on a BBYO Passport to Israel tour, on BBYO Eco-Quest volunteer services tour to Costa Rica, as well as family travels.
A Dallas native, Shea is the daughter of Kathy and Phil, and the younger sister of Matt and Yavneh Alum, Chad '05. A member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla and Congregation Tiferet Israel, Shea is also a member of BBYO's Wadel Chapter, the board of the Jewish Youth Tzedakah Foundation, and Richardson Youth Leadership. On campus, Shea has been involved with Hashinui/Environmental Club, Invisible Children, Mock Trial, Lady Bulldog Volleyball and Bulldog Tennis, Spirit Crew, and YACHAD.
Sweet, smiley, and always sincere, Shea is one to always remain forever young at Yavneh, but we know forever meaningful as she steps forth!

The Week in Review ~
The Curtain Rises ~
Congrats to Yavneh's 2013 Theatre Department, Dr. Tim Cloward, and Director Michael Federico on great presentations of "Epic Adventures in a Rinky Dink Art Museum," written by Ken Preuss. The production, which brings a low-rent museum, a boring fieldtrip, and a creative writing assignment together, all the unlikely ingredients for adventure.
Kol Hakavod to actors Danielle Berman, Joey Goldman, Daniel Granat, Nathasha Guaqueta, Valerie Lopez, Logan Luskey, Bradley Riche, Adina Romaner, Kayley Romick, Serina Romick, Rachel Rudberg, Elie Schramm, Yael Spirer, Sammy Weyser, and Adam Wilensky.
Todah Raba to Yavneh artists, directed by Monica Ribald, for their props, set, and stage design; Rachel Chanon, Tamar Cohen, Samuel Coretz, Aaron Herschberg, Yosef Presburger, and Lauren Siegel, and superb efforts too to piano accompanist Andrew Appell and Crew Members Hannah Gartner, Jordan Haberer, Jonathan Kravitz, Scott Lacritz, Kayley Romick, Erin Smith, and Benji Zoller.
You Can Bank on It ~
Yavneh's art program, directed by Monica Ribald, is a great investment and the fruits of our labor are on display, through February 15, at the BBVA Compass Bank at Preston Road & Forest Lane. Wednesday evening, the bank hosted a grand gallery opening of the display and Yavneh supporters, students and families, and community visitors enjoyed the artwork and the community connection. The support of neighbors like BBVA Compass Bank, well you can take that to the bank!
HighSchool Hero!

"HighSchool Heroes" founder Lauren Stock, an eighth-grade student at Greenhill School visited Yavneh's students to kick off Yavneh's first deletebloodcancer.org bone marrow drive - in conjunction with our seventh annual Maddie's Mitzvah CarterBloodCare blood drive.
Recognizing a need for donors, after her mother Karen was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma, four years ago, Lauren, founded her organization to educate students when they turn 18 on how they can make a difference and save someone's life. On a student's eighteenth birthday, Lauren sends an e-mail that includes a brief version of her story, why they should register, and a link to a website explaining how they can register.
"There are so many people who need a match, and it's so easy to sign up. I want kids to know that from a young age they might be able to save someone's life," said Lauren who can be reached at lauren.stock@mellownet.com for more information. "It takes just a few minutes and a one-time cheek swab to get registered, but you stay on the list until you are 55."
Yavneh registered a number of possible donors; students, parents, and faculty members! Kol hakavod to Lauren and to all who participated!
