From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Tzedakah is one of those Hebrew words that is often discussed, both linguistically and in terms of its central value in our community.
Etymologically, we are taught that it is derived from the word tzedek, and therefore means "justice," while colloquially we translate it as "charity," making it sound more American.
(There are so many Jewish words with no accurate English counterpart - which is why we have Yiddish! ;o).
However we understand or describe tzedakah, we are fortunate and proud to practice it in large and generous ways at Yavneh. Just this week, our Students4Students organization raised its final donations to complete construction of a second school in Darfur, Sudan. Because of the hard work of our students, and the generosity of the Dallas Jewish Community, the lives of hundreds, even thousands, of people will be forever changed and enriched.
And as I pen these words, many of our students, faculty and parents are donating blood and testing for bone marrow matches, which will literally save lives and the families and communities to which they are connected. What better ways to fulfill the biblical injunction tzedek, tzedek tirdof - justice, justice shall you pursue!
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,
~~ Dr. P

Mitzi Steiner Yeshiva University
|
Mitzi Steiner, of Yeshiva University's Graduate Program in Advanced Talmudic Studies, visited with our students today, sharing depth into the meaning of Tu B'Shvat which occurs tomorrow.
"We are commanded to plant trees in Eretz Yisroel, just as Hashem's first act after creating Man was to plant a tree," she said. "For us, the mitzvah to plant trees provides physical sustenance and allows us to emulate Hashem."
Ms. Steiner spoke of a tradition of planting a tree when one's son or daughter is born, and when that child is married that the branches of the bride and groom would come together to create that which would hold the chuppah.
Ms. Steiner also met with a number of 10th and 11th grade girls in an additional class period after the morning's davening.
*********
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah in this week's Snappy Sentiments, written by Dania Tanur '14, and that you'll share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!
Shabbat Shalom ~
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Class of 2013 ~~ Josh Lynn
"Yavneh is: Different. Special. Welcoming."
"Josh has been my project and we've come a long way!," said Yavneh's Math Department Chair, Veronica Thomas. "After his freshman year, I specifically wanted Josh in my Geometry class and he worked hard, he maintained good grades, and he was extremely respectful and funny. He thinks I am his girlfriend - and so every time he sees me, he wants to know when we are going on a date."
Josh, who had attended public schools before coming to Yavneh, found a "very warm and welcoming environment when I got here," he said. "The best part about Yavneh is how inclusive the school is. It is very small which means everyone knows each other and everyone is friends. From the beginning I knew this was why I would finish my high school career here."
"Yavneh is very successful at providing its dual curriculum," said Josh. "The administration builds each student's schedule to include classes from all over the spectrum, but they always make sure General Studies are included at a very challenging level."
Josh, who is a Dallas native, is the son of Holly and Scott and the older brother to Sophie '15. Affiliated with Temple Emanu-El and a former member of BBYO's Monsky chapter, while on-Campus Josh has been a Yavneh Bulldog Basketball player, he founded the school's Red Cross Club, and has been involved in Helping Hands for the Homeless, Spirit Club, and Students Against Terrorism.
Summer breaks for Josh have included a community service trip to Costa Rica, where he helped build a school and a church and teach English to children. He also attended the National Student Leadership Conference and a business and entrepreneurship program at the University of Chicago, and has volunteered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Richardson.
Already accepted to Colorado State, Denver University, and Southern Methodist University, Josh plans to major in business. "I haven't decided for sure what field I want to work in yet but my Dad has been very successful in commercial real estate and I'm inspired to join the field."
"I believe that Josh will be great at whatever he does in life," said Gloria Boyd, who teaches both English and Spanish, "whenever he focuses his passion (like a laser) on that endeavor."
"I will always remember Josh for his wittiness and repartee; he has a lapidary wit and his reposts are hysterical. I think that he has two callings: comedy and advertising," said Mrs. Boyd. "As a junior he bought an enormously thick book about the foundation of advertising: the manipulation of emotions, the why and the how. This was an adult level, professional grade book; and I was amazed by his purchase of it because it demonstrated just how determined and focused Josh could be when he fixed his passion on one subject."
