From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Back in the day, we called it the eye of the tiger.

It was a phrase connoting competitive spirit, single-minded focus and an overwhelming desire to win.

At Yavneh Academy in 2013, we see terrific examples of the competitive spirit every day.  Our athletic program boasts one of the finest basketball traditions for a school our size in the country.  Following a spectacular year for last year's Girls Team (winners of two national tournaments), this year's Boys Varsity is off to an unbelievable 24-5 start, losing only three games since their preseason tournament in Memphis. If you are a Yavneh fan, you no doubt are familiar with Zack Pollack's Kennel Report ... "now in its ninth season."

Intensity on the court is matched by nail-biting excitement in the court, as our Yavneh Mock Trial team competes for the first time in the Texas Bar Association State Tournament.  From opening statements to exhibit presentations, to cross-examinations and objections, our mock lawyers go head to head with established programs at much larger schools from across the state.  And just as their counterparts in athletics and journalism succeed, they also learn sportsmanship, team cooperation and productive interaction with a wide swath of public and private schools in our rich Texas landscape.

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom,

~~ Dr. P

Shabbat Shalom  ~

Rabbi Moshe Greene, father-in-law of Yavneh Judaic faculty member, Rabbi Michel Lomner, shared with our students this morning the importance of hearing, of listening, of being a seeker, not one for whom life just happens.

"Yitro who we read about this week was a non-Jew, an idol worshipper, and yet he is given the title of the 'mother of all parshiot,' that which comes just as we are about to receive the Torah," he said. "The only way to have wisdom is to be like Yitro - to seek and to learn."

"There are three types of people,"

  said Rabbi Greene.

1) He who says "I am what I am and I'm

    not changing,"

2)  He who is always changing, just as the
leaves blow with the wind, never
     committing
to any one thought.

3) He, who is a seeker - a "work in progress,"

     one "under construction."

"You are the future of the Jewish People," said Rabbi Greene. "We are not born complete, and all of our talents are sewn into our souls. Your hob is to say "I'm here," God - to allow the world to send you messages and to help you figure a way to bring out

Steven Bokov '15 spreading Rabbi Greene's message of "Under Construction."

your talents and to polish your edges."

Yitro wanted to find truth, to become a leader, and he found the gift to have wisdom, and light to enter his soul. "Va'Yishma Yitro," "And Yitro heard," we read. You should hear, you should listen and be affected - physically and spiritually. Some have the gift to hear quickly, some will never hear.

The Torah provides the mitzvahs and law which are all avenues for us to hear the message of God and I hope you will all put yourself into the world of mitzvoth. Be a seeker, grow, and always be a work in progress.

We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah in this week's  Snappy Sentiments, written by Rachel Siegel '13, and that you'll share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!

   Shabbat Shalom ~

Class of 2013 ~~  Stephanie Medina

       "Yavneh is: Compassionate.  Supportive.  Unique."

"Coming to Yavneh and Dallas' Jewish Community as given my family and I the chance to share my religion," said Stephanie - a native of Pharr, Texas. "Before our move here, it was a struggle to keep kosher, and so much of Jewish life is community - and we were missing that."

"With family history that is Hispanic, Scottish, and Greek, I feel I have a strong ancestry and it's very important to me. As a Jew, I want to continue to grow and to know more about our religion, our descendents that are Sephardic, and where I come from," said Stephanie who moved to Dallas in time to begin her sophomore year at Yavneh. "Our family has the intention to make aliyah, and I believe that our moving to Dallas has been a stepping stone to growing to be able to make that commitment at some point."

"Stephanie's quietness is deceiving. Behind that shy exterior is a deep and insightful young woman who works hard to be the best person she can be," said English teacher, Bonnie Atkins. "She is devoted to her family's culture and religious beliefs and, although she is the youngest of her siblings, she supports her parents by helping around the house, at their store, and with them in the Jewish community. Stephanie's dedication to herself and the people she loves will be her greatest strength and characteristic that will set her apart in the future."

"Stephanie is eager to learn, and her attendance and attention is remarkable," said Science faculty member, Lourdes Linzey. "She is able to complete multiple tasks with favorable results despite pressure and she always strives to excel. Stephanie is unassuming and always ready to learn and understand the principle involved in chemistry. Her enthusiasm, attitude and demeanor lead me to believe that she has the drive to become successful in all her undertaking."

Stephanie is the daughter of Yafah and Elishema and the younger sister of Jaret, Andrew, and Faith '11. Very involved in her congregation, Achdut Israel, Stephanie spends many Saturday nights readying the shul for the following week's services and also represents her shul as a regular volunteer at the Kosher Chili Cookoff. On campus, Stephanie is a member of the Yavneh Lady Bulldog Soccer and Volleyball teams as well as a member of Hashinui/Environmental Club, Kids Korner, and Students4Students.

Readying to participate on the March of the Living, learning about the history of the Holocaust, and the depth of anti-Semitism in our history, is something that Stephanie appreciates more with each lesson. "I've never been out of Texas, other than to see family in Mexico, and I'm so excited to go to Israel and on the March," she said. "I'm excited to take the trip with thousands of Jews from around the world - all of us experiencing at the same time the lessons to pass on to future generations. It's our history and I'm proud to learn it and to share it so that it's not forgotten."

After graduation, Stephanie plans to remain in Dallas to complete her General Ed basics at Brookhaven College before pursuing a higher degree. In addition to wanting to work with an organization that services communities in crisis, and in the aftermath of emergency situations, she is considering a future as an art therapist. Stephanie enjoys working with people and finds art - almost indescribable - in how it allows one to express themselves and "exhale." "Although I'm working on my painting, I really love sketching - there's so much you can do with pen and pencil," she said. "I hope to have the chance to give people the outlet to express themselves through art."

"I've been truly impressed with Stephanie's focus and drive," said Associate Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward. "She is an extremely hard-worker and she has put her shoulder to the wheel and made herself successful. I've been truly impressed with her work and it is obvious that she thinks deeply and has a fine mind."

Between Stephanie's find mind - her clear heart - and her desire always to put others first, Yavneh will boast proudly to have been a base in her "stepping stone," of becoming a fine, Jewish education woman.

The Week in Review

Students4Students $ucceed!

Kol Hakavod to Yavneh's Students4Students who have reached their goal of earning $17,000, enough to cover the construction costs of a schoolhouse in the Goz Amer refugee camp in Chad to benefit 900 Darfur refugee children.

Students4Students, which already raised more than $10,000 and donated that to build a school in Azezo in Northwestern Ethiopia, partnered with the Jewish World Watch Sister Schools Project to build this second school. In April, the organization hosted a movie screening of "3 Points," which details the fforts of NBA All Star, Atlanta Hawk Tracy McGrady's humanitarian efforts in the Darfur region.

"Our work supporting quality education in the camps would not be possible without student groups like Students4Students who understand the importance of education and care enough to make sure that their peers around world especially refugees also have access to a good education," said Olabukunola Williams, of the Enough Project/Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program. "The hope that education in refugee camps brings is immeasurable and during my recent trip to the camps, I've shared stories of the students like yours who answered the call to make an investment in a better future for Darfuris and Darfur. The tangible impacts of the group's fundraising efforts will last a lifetime."

"We're blessed at Yavneh to receive an incredible secular education coupled with lessons of morals, values, and the foundation of our Jewish tradition," said Rachel Siegel '13, who co-founded S4S with Dalit Agronin '12 and Jori Epstein '12, and who this year carries its torch with co-President, Lauren Siegel '14. "It's that education, and the respect we have for it, that makes us want

Students4Students 2012-2013

and need to help others."

"Our $17,000 will build the school," said Rachel. "It will take another $33,000 to provide a teacher, security, supplies, and training but it's a start and we are very proud of being able to make a difference. Our campus at Yavneh is incredible and we wanted to share the blessing of the opportunity for a place in which to learn."

Maddie's Mitzvah 2013

Kol Hakavod to the Yavneh Family; our students, faculty, families, and community friends who participated in our 2013 Maddie's Mitzvah Blood & Bone Marrow Registration Drive.

In this, our seventh drive, we collected enough blood to help 72 people in need. We had donors of whole blood, double red cells, and one platelet donation. In addition, a number of students, parents, and faculty members registered with deletebloodcancer.organd one day, may make the difference to one in need.

"We so appreciate coming out to your school each year with all the happy faces excited about donating blood, and wanting to make a difference in the world," said Donna Diehl, of Carter BloodCare. "Your donors gladly give the most unselfish of gifts - part of themselves,  never knowing whose  lives they may have saved.  Your students are our future as we all know - and it looks like we will be in very good hands!"

Thanks from Mr. & Mr. Miyara ~

To my dear Yavneh family;

In the past 30 years I have resided in almost a dozen cities across the globe. I have studied, traveled, and explored these areas restlessly. I have been lucky enough to meet countless people from various different walks of life. I have created and ended friendships, loved deeply and hated fervently. I have remembered and I have forgotten, I have laughed and I have cried. Yet, despite all these experiences,     I have never found a place to call "home"; I may have lived many places but I have never made a life in one.

Until now.

Since the day I first walked through Yavneh's doors, pieces of my life have started falling into place. I truly believe Yavneh is a gift- a blessing- that I have been so fortunate to receive. After 30 years of searching, with the help of some wonderful people, the love of one man, and the guidance of Hashem - my path has led me to Yavneh to share my wedding day with a community I have fallen deeply in love with.

A bittersweet day, I expected, full of tissues and tears. The blissful festivity would surely be overpowered by a flood of nostalgic memories. But the feelings I dreaded never surfaced. Instead what I felt was warmth and love, exhilaration and delight. Everyone was smiling, laughing, singing, dancing. The tears that fell were tears of joy, not tears of sorrow. And suddenly I realized that the void in my heart was no longer there. It is with an open heart that I welcome Yavneh into my life.

Never in my life have I seen a group of individuals come together in such harmony to support someone, especially a person who is new to the community. You have embodied the vision of "V'Ahavta l'reacha kamocha"- love thy neighbor as you love yourself.

The meaning of Yavneh is "to build" and it is here that I am building my life; it is here I call home.

Thank you, everyone, for being my family.
