From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Visitors to our campus both enrich and bring out the best in our students. Just this week, we were privileged to host a variety of guests, each of whom touched and elevated us.
Max Glauben spent an evening with our senior class, speaking and sharing an extraordinary documentary of his life. Max is a survivor of the Holocaust, and will accompany our students, G-d willing on their capstone March of the Living trip in April.
Wedding photojournalist Kyle Coburn visited with a group of journalism students to share his career evolution from sports-action photographer to wedding photojournalist. A former student of Ms. Hall-Chiles, he showed us how to "tell the story" of an event through visual means, much as a print journalist tells it through words.
Slam poet Joaquín Zihuatanejo returned to Yavneh for an intense after-school session on rhyme, rhythm and presence. A colleague and friend of Dr. Cloward's, he regaled our students with his talent and self-discipline - firing their imaginations and aspirations.
The Mock Trial Team from Lubbock, Texas made its yearly journey to Dallas and Yavneh, spending most of today sparring with and learning from our students and coaches. Many thanks to Warren Abrams, Harry Saginaw and Rick Cohen for their tireless work with our student attorneys and witnesses!
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom!
~~ Dr. P

Shabbat Shalom ~

"I saw an ad in the Jewish Press that said 'Join the Army, See the World,' - and so I did," said U.S. Army Chaplain - Rabbi Maj. Ira Ehrenpreis, when addressing Yavneh's students. Prior to his current assignment as a chaplain recruiter in Grand Prairie, the Major was based in Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft. Lewis, WA, Iraq, and Korea. Leading services for Purim in Korea and hosting Pesach Seders in one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces in Iraq, are among the memories the rabbi shared with Yavneh's students.

The Week in Review ~
Rockin' the Vote for Israel
In preparation for the upcoming elections in Israel, Yavneh's students learned about the political parties, breaking into groups to understand more about the platforms, leadership, history, and focus of each.

"One of our missions at Yavneh is to encourage our students to love Israel and be passionate about Israel," said Naomi Schrager, Assistant Principal/Judaic Programming.
"Although our students will likely not be voting in Israeli elections in the near future, it is another way of being connected to our brothers and sisters who are there."
Slam Poetry ~ Yavneh Style
Joaquin Zihuatanejo, of the Dallas Poetry Slam Youth Speaks Series met with Yavneh students to encourage their creativity, to introduce and enhance their understanding of Slam Poetry, and to bring out the spirit of their own inner-poet!
A National Poetry Slam Finalist, Grand Slam Spoken Word Champion, and HBO Def Poet, Joaquín, who also participated in Yavneh's Poetry Day last fall, has performed his poetry at universities, conferences and poetry slams in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe.
"We are thrilled whenever we can get Joaquin to come visit. He is a master at performance poetry, and excellent at working with teenagers. An event like this is an excellent supplement to our regular curriculum," said Dr. Tim Cloward, Associate Principal. "Writing is, of course, one of the primary skills we teach here and creative writing builds on the skills that we are already imparting, adding too a higher level of technical mastery. Creativity engages the passions, and helps the author achieve not just knowledge, but self-knowledge." |

Mitzvah Makers ~
2013 Maddie's Mitzvah Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registration 1.25.13 - Yavneh's Pollman Hall

Maddie White, for whom we first dedicated Yavneh's Blood Drive
six years ago, has strength and spirit that have never waned,
even as she required a number of surgeries and the transfusion
of hundreds of pints of plasma, whole blood, and platelets since November, 2007. Maddie's family reports she is doing well!
This year we again dedicate our drive to eight year-old Zach Guillot, whose family belongs to Temple Emanu-El, and who happens to be a schoolmate of our friend, Maddie. Zach's fight against AML Leukemia has been an example of living each day, for hanging on in belief, and for appreciating every moment!
Carter BloodCare will lead our blood drive and we will, for the first time, register prospective bone marrow donors in partnership with Delete Blood Cancer.
Please check both websites to learn more and educate yourself about how to be the best donor! (FAQs of how to prepare, what to eat, age/medication/travel restrictions)
Minutes of your time may save lives!
Please share with your co-workers, friends, and family as the drive is open to the public. For more information, call 972.839.6916 or email info@yavnehdallas.org

March of the Living 2013
The 2013 March of the Living Tour participants are readying for the experience of a lifetime, their sharing in the MOL Tour of Poland and Israel from April 4 to 18.
On Sunday night, Max Glauben, a Holocaust survivor who has joined the Yavneh MOL tour on seven occasions, previewed the documentary of his story, "Plagues of the Soul." In speaking to students, parents, and supporters of the MOL, Max shares that "to go back there and show that what they (the Nazis) wanted, that they didn't accomplish, was something. I've stood with my children, and Yavneh's children at the top of Masada as we each held the pen that wrote a new Torah. No, what the Nazi's wanted, didn't come to pass."
"Going on the March of the Living is a culmination of everything we have learned and worked towards here at Yavneh," said Rachel Siegel, a senior who has long waited for her turn to go on the March, in speaking to the audience. "We are so fortunate to have a program in place that takes us to a place where just a few generations before, many of our ancestors were killed because of their religion and faith. Making the statement that we are here to protect the continuity of Jewish learning is a testament to those that worked to establish our school and all those that have taught us along the way.
Furthermore, traveling onto Israel is a symbol of what we can do as young Jewish Americans in the future."
Yavneh's MOL students have hosted a number of fundraisers and appreciate the community's support of the program. Yavneh's MOL travelers have partnered with World Wear Project, to provide shoes and clothing for those in need while raising funds for their experience.
The collection bin which can accept items including shoes, clothing, belts, purses, wallets, hats, caps, backpacks, stuffed animals, hard toys and pots and pans is located in the Yavneh parking lot against the back fence.

Nurse's Note ~
The influenza season is upon us.
What should I watch for?
Influenza has an abrupt start with a fever, chills, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, body aches and tiredness. Nausea and vomiting may occur in children.
How is influenza spread?
Most experts believe flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. A person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.
When is a person with influenza contagious?
A person with influenza is most contagious 24 hours BEFORE the symptoms begin. Once symptoms begin children can be contagious up to 7 days and adults up to 5 days.
How long should they stay out of school and other activities?
Until fever is gone for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication and the student is feeling well enough to participate in routine activities.
What is the treatment for influenza?
Antiviral medications can shorten the course of illness if given within 36 to 48 hours after the symptoms begin. Influenza is a viral illness; therefore, antibiotics are not effective.
CAUTION: NEVER GIVE ASPIRIN OR ANY PRODUCTS CONTAINING ASPIRIN TO ANY CHILD OR ADOLESCENT UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE.
How can influenza be prevented?
It is not too late to get a flu shot. Clinics administer them either by injection or the nasal spray vaccine. The good news is this year's flu vaccine is a close match to the current flu virus. Since you are most contagious PRIOR to having symptoms, the flu vaccine is the BEST WAY TO PREVENT the spread of influenza!
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm running water after contact with any secretions from the nose or mouth or handling used tissues.
Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or cough/sneeze into your sleeve (inside elbow).
Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces (door knobs, refrigerator handle, water faucets, cupboard handles, etc.) Studies have shown that human influenza viruses generally can survive on surfaces between two and eight hours.
Be well,
Susan Donnenfield,RN, BSN, BA
School Nurse
