From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

A Thousand Chai.  Eighteen Thousand Dollars. $18,000.  That's how much money our Helping Hands for the Homeless (HHH) student group raised this week for the Genesis Women's Shelter, one of the nation's leading social service organizations.  Located in downtown Dallas, Genesis provides thousands of women and children, all victims of domestic violence, with a wide range of support services - literally saving lives all across our city.

HHH is one of Yavneh's signature student-led organizations, committed to Tikun Olam - repairing the world.  With a deep sense of gratitude for the privileges they enjoy, student leaders research and visit prospective recipient organizations. Following that, they plan extraordinary activities that generate community-wide support, resulting in donations like the one we witnessed this week.

The education our students receive through such co-curricular opportunities - including athletics, the arts and so much else - is a hallmark of Yavneh Academy.  Many of our alumni's most enduring memories of high school include student-initiated activities like Students Against Terrorism/Points for Peace (to benefit Israeli victims), Students 4 Students (international and local educational initiatives) and HHH.

At this miraculous time of Chanukah, we, their parents and teachers, could not be more proud of them.  As they prepare for final exams and projects next week, please give them all the support (care and feeding) they need.  Winter Break is less than a week away!

From our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom, and Happy Chanukah!

Week in Review ~

Helping Hands for the Homeless ~

The lights of a menorah with hundreds of candles would shine almost as bright as the faces Yavneh's Helping Hands for the Homeless students as they announced a gift to Dallas' Genesis Women's Shelter - a gift of their $18,000 raised for the event.

"Everyone in our organization worked tirelessly over the past few months making sure our event went off without a hitch," said Dalya Romaner who serves as HHH co-President with Adam Steinbrecher.

"Our goal was to have a great event and raise a lot of money for Genesis Women's Shelter, but the event was a lot more than that," said Dalya. "It really brought people together for a great cause and helped other people become aware of Genesis and how much what they do matters."

"We are without words and could not be appreciative," Sarah Taylor, Director of

HHH co-Presidents Adam Steinbrecher & Dalya Romaner with Genesis Women's Shelter's Sarah Taylor.

Programs for Genesis Women's Shelter said as the proceeds of the evening were announced. "This gift literally helps us keep the lights on, our doors open, and allows us to provide safety and shelter in a warm community for so many."

For battered women and their children, Genesis provides at no cost shelter, safety, counseling, and expert services including a 24-Hour Hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling, daycare, play therapy for children, an on-site school, case management, parenting classes, legal services, job readiness classes, and domestic violence education.

"In so many ways, our society glamorizes abuse, and to hear these students say loud and clear that 'this is not ok' makes them so wise beyond their years," said Ms. Taylor. "We are so thrilled and really incredibly overwhelmed by their interest, their generosity, and the goodness that is in each of them."

The evening's success students say was possible in large part to the help of  YavnehMom Janyce Steinbrecher and many who donated items for the raffle and catering for the dinner including A Taste of the World catering, Jack Black Cosmetics, Café Fino, Chooze Shoes, Debbie Gaspar Jewelry, Torri Hayden, Intergem, the Levine Family, Move Studio, Milk & Honey Jerusalem Market & Grill, Natalie's Kitchen,  Simcha Kosher Catering, Skibell Fine Jewelry, The Spice of Life Catering, Starbucks, the Steinborn Family, Janyce Steinbrecher, Dr. Eduardo Tanur/Periodontal Associates, Tom Thumb, and Zinga Frozen Yogurt.

HHH, started in 2010 by Rachel Goodman '13 and Gabby Steinbrecher '12. The organization's members have in the last three years also supported Family Gateway, Jonathan's Place and numerous other agencies, with students serving meals, spending time with children and families, and donations of over $40,000.

Among the more than 150 guests to the event were the ladies of Loving Hearts, a table of women who understand the mission of Yavneh's students, the mission to help and support others, to serve tikun olam - that of repairing the world. "We are so excited to be here and so proud of these kids for having such a successful event," said Carmen Grinstein who spoke on behalf of the ladies' group, including members and YavnehMoms Sandra Dickter, Daniel Frid, Dinora Friedstadt, Jaynie Schultz & Ron Romaner, and Janyce & Jacob Steinbrecher, which donates time and resources to numerous programs. "This is really incredible and it was a such a beautiful night!"

"I'm very lucky not to have known any of life's true adversities and so I feel it important to help others in need," said Adam. "My Jewish education, at Akiba and Yavneh academies, and through my parents, has taught me always to help those in need. I hope our donation will help provide structure, order, and hope for the women and children who Genesis Women's Shelter provides."

As the evening was held on the fifth night of Chanukah, as Yavneh Assistant Principal/Judaic Curriculum, Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum lit the menorah, he shared that, while there is much darkness in the world, it takes just one flame to light a spark of beauty. "Every single good deed we do lights up the world around us," he said.

Meg Murray Concert ~
".... hold on, be brave, my love will lead
you to a safer place.  Through darkness, and through pain, I'm right behind you and I call your name."  ~ With You Now

There were only good vibrations coming from the stage at Yavneh's Pollman Hall this morning as singer-songwriter-educator Meg Murray sang her way into the hearts of our female students and staff, and into the sensitivities, and sensibilities, of positive feeling.

"This world is a beautiful place if we take time to see it, there's joy beneath the soil if we take time to dig it up," sang the 25-year-old Meg, a native of Cheyenne, Wyoming and a graduate of Vanderbilt University. "Through it all there's joy, love, and laughter to share, most of all there's goodness in the air."

"I went through a really difficult struggle with depression during high school and college but, even in the darkest hours, and I had many, I found that there was something, a way to find some joy, and a way to pull through."

"With all the stress that young people face - and in these weeks with finals and waiting on college acceptances, and who knows what other struggles," said Meg, " I hope you will always cling to hope.

"In my work I help young ladies learn how to communicate  through the good and  tough times that teen life presents," said Shani Romick, a YavnehMom and Communication Skills Specialist, affiliated with Girls to Women Health and Wellness. "These years can be a tough journey and to have this morning to share the music and messages that Meg creates and wants to give out to the world, is a great and uplifting opportunity."

Meg's Own Your Joy is an anti-bullying and character education presentation focused on empowering youth to be confident in themselves, kind toward others, respectful of those with differences, and generators of positivity everyday.

"We each have a proverbial coffee cup to fill each day and we have the power to fill it with positivity or negativity," said Meg. "Throughout the day we drink from this cup and it makes us who we are."

On Meg's website www.megmurraymusic.com, she  provides a number of resources, recommendations, and challenges for visitors. Among them, a Coffee Cup Worksheet through which guests can start their day with 10 goals, hopes, and other wants - emotional or tactile to strive for and a Little Lights Challenge, as a bookend for evening review of 10 experiences of joy, no matter how small, from the day.

"There are so many comparisons in our lives; what we wear, academics, athletics, social - live to love yourself and realize you are whole and complete," she said. "Strive always to be only what you were inherently created to be."

Students 4 Students ~

Members of Yavneh's Students 4 Students are closing in on securing enough funds to  build their SECOND school for children they've never met. The group, which already donated $10,600 to build a school in Ethiopia, is $3000 short of celebrating the gift of another home of learning.

S4S' has raised another $17,000 to build a school in the Goz Amer refugee camp in Darfur.

"We're blessed at Yavneh to receive an incredible secular education coupled with lessons of morals, values, and the foundation of our Jewish tradition," said S4S co-founder Rachel Siegel '13. "It's that education, and the respect we have for it, that makes us want and need to help others."

school-building efforts, email s4sdarfur@gmail.com or call 214.295.3500.
