From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,
Just before Thanksgiving, as you know,
I had the privilege of accompanying the staff of The Bulldog Print to the National High School Journalism Conference in San Antonio.
I attended workshop sessions on digital media, teenage development and good writing, and while seeing the Alamo and Riverwalk for the first time was exciting, nothing beat the moment when it was announced that our student paper, out of a total of nearly 500 schools from North America, London and S. Korea, and nearly 5,000 student journalists, was named "Best in Show." In other words, Yavneh Academy was recognized as the best student newspaper of all the schools in attendance.
It was a dramatic moment, filled with tears and shouts - and underscored but one aspect of the excellence we strive for here at Yavneh. And the Yavneh student body response to my announcing the award was extremely touching as well, as fellow students celebrated, with sustained applause, The Bulldog Print's "national championship."
Speaking of winners, our Boys Varsity Basketball Team is enjoying a nine-game winning streak, quite a feat for a team that was supposed to be in a "building year." Please come out Saturday night for our Havdallah program and game against St. Marks. We would love to welcome the new week with you!
Finally, Wednesday night was a great community-wide celebration of our beloved Schultz-Romaner family. Lots of students (seniors pictured above), parents, alumni and friends of Yavneh were in attendance at the CJE event featuring Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy Shabbat Shalom.
~~ Dr. P

Rabbi Maury Grebenau
South Peninsula Hebrew Day School
|
Rabbi Maury Grebenau returned with great fanfare to share our Friday morning minyan. Rabbi Grebenau, now the Assistant Head of School at South Peninsula Hebrew Day School, in Palo Alto, California, spoke of how Yaakov left with only a staff in his hand, sent on a journey that ultimately changed his life forever. "When I first came to Yavneh I was a newly married, just out of school rabbi - so starting from the beginning," said Rabbi Grebenau. "We left here this summer with a strong connection to Dallas, to Yavneh, to this family - and Malka and I left as a not-so-newly couple, the parents of three daughters, on our way to a new journey." "Whether you are a freshman, just starting your experience here at Yavneh, or a senior, readying to go to Israel or university, how can you be like Yaakov - how will you walk in with essentially little, but leave with a rich experience, a sense of purpose," said Rabbi. "If you live eem bigapoe yavo bigapoe yaitzae - if you come with nothing and you leave with nothing, you have gained nothing. Be sure you never walk out of a 'moment' of life unaffected, this of why you were there and how meaningful your time was. Carry yourself through - shtay machinos - with so much more." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please also note TOMORROW NIGHT - December 1 @ 7pm, the Yavneh Family, parents, students and faculty are invited to a Melaveh Malkah with learning, Havdalah, and food before the Yavneh Bulldogs play the St. Marks.
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah in this week's
Snappy Sentiments and that you'll share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!
Shabbat Shalom ~
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Class of 2013 ~ Kelly Herson
"Yavneh is: Authentic. Encouraging. An Accomplishment."
The daughter of Gail Herson and Neil Herson, Kelly has not only followed in her sister Brittany's ('09) footsteps at Yavneh, but she's certainly driven her own path as well. With her college applications all submitted, Kelly has been accepted to the University of Georgia and awaits future mailbox deliveries, with plans to study sociology and journalism.
As Editor of The Bulldog Print, which has won many awards including last week's Best in Show for papers 13-16 pages, at the National High School Journalism convention, Kelly says that "I love journalism so much and it has greatly improved my communication and writing skills as well as harboring my passion for the written word. We, as a staff, want our voices to be heard. We do not shy away from controversial topics such as school budget or political viewpoints; these are often my favorite articles."
"Our paper is a forum to expose what often goes unsaid," said Kelly who also served on the paper's staff as a reporter, Entertainment Editor, and Managing Editor. "Each publication is a testament to our commitment to truthful and honest reporting. The time and dedication to the newspaper is incredibly worthwhile."
"What I love about Kelly is her ability to diffuse drama," said Sandy Hall-Chiles, Journalism teacher and Adviser to The Bulldog Print. "When tension mounts on newspaper deadline, her calm encouragement of others, paired with her own doubled-down efforts, fires the light at the end of the tunnel. She has an uncanny ability to read the needs of others, and the unfaltering humanity to try and fulfill them. With interests as diverse as can be and creative and intellective talents to match, Kelly is easily the lynchpin of everywhere she is involved."
Writing, for Kelly, is a craft she's refined and used throughout her courseload.
"Kelly showed how she can use her creativity to explain complex ideas when as a Biology student," said Science Department Chair, Dr. Steven Goldfine, "she wrote a outstanding scientifically accurate, entertaining and original short story on ecosystems."
"Kelly is an amazingly engaged and creative student," said Dr. Steven Goldfine. "She routinely makes the most unexpected and interesting connections between topics - often with real world implications."
"I first came to Yavneh because I knew of my sister's positive experience," she said, "but I love going to school here because I have had my own unique opportunities as well as personal growth."
"Our dual-curriculum means for a long day but here, we learn to manage our time quickly," said Kelly who credits laughing with friends as a means of getting through the days. " Also, every class has something completely different to offer and there is a nurturing classroom environment here that invites discussion and intellectual achievement."
On-Campus, in addition to The Bulldog Print, Kelly has made her mark on the Debate Team, as a Student Ambassador and member of the Lady Bulldog Basketball team for two years, as well as through service to Students Against Terrorism and Points for Peace Basketball Tournament as Prize Coordinator, Treasurer - this year she is Co-President.
"As a Jew in America, it is crucial to support Israel in any way we can and Students Against Terrorism is a great organization to do that through," said Kelly, noting the 2013 P4P Tourney, on March 3, will benefit ZAKA, an organization that assists ambulance crews, providing first aid, rescue services, and recovery operations . "It is devastating that terrorism can be such a daily part of life there. One day, hopefully, peace will come. It is a miracle that Israel can exist and we need to support that miracle and show our unwavering support for our fellow Jews. I stand with Israel today and always and the Points for Peace tournament is one way I can show my support."
A Dallas native, Kelly is a member of Congregation Shaare Tefilla and a graduate of the Ann & Nate Levine Academy. She was a representative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas' Jewish Youth Tzedakah Foundation and, as a member of BBYO's Fannie Sablosky chapter, she has served as the chapter's Shlicha, responsible for infusing Jewish heritage into the programming.
Kelly is a member of TACT, the TeenAge Communication Theatre, performing original theatre pieces about issues including self-esteem, peer pressure, teen pregnancy, dating violence, and alcoholism. In March, as a member of the Dallas

chapter of HaZamir, an international Jewish youth choir - Kelly will return to NYC's Lincoln Center to perform. Not one to "just hang," Kelly's summers have been spent as meaningfully as every other season of the year. She's traveled to Ecuador to teach children English, build bathrooms and fences. She also returned to Camp Interlaken JCC, where she spent many years as a camper, to work as a CIT and then Counselor. With her sister and father, Kelly climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, raising over $66,000 for the Save One Life Foundation and distributing medicine to local hospitals and patients' homes in Kenya.
"As I climbed up the mountain I was able to discover myself and my abilities," said Kelly. "I can do anything I set my mind to. On the mountain I became known on my trip as 'the girl who smiles,' and I'd like to carry that with me for the rest of my life."
Kelly, you are the one who smiles, and the one who makes it possible for so many others to do so as well! May every day forward be a smile defined.

Week in Review ~
A Night to Celebrate Jewish Education honors
Jaynie Schultz & Ron Romaner
Fitting it was for us to kvell on behalf of Yavneh parents, Jaynie Schultz and Ron Romaner, as the duo were honored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas' Center for Jewish Education for their dedication, devotion, and determined drive that every Jew in our community, locally and beyond, find an avenue to learn through.
"Every aspect of the CJE has been touched by you," said Yavneh Past President, and CJE Chair Pam Fine, as she welcomed close to 1000 guests to SMU's McFarlin Auditorium. "Your Judaism is the center of your lives."
JFGD Chair Jeff Rasansky and Federation President & CEO Susan Kramer noted that the CJE supports every spectrum of Dallas' community, and that when looking for leadership therein, one need not look further than the hearts of Jaynie and Ron.
"Ya'ashar, koach, our grandfathers used to say," said Meyer Denn, CJE's Executive Director. "This, as we look around the room, is koyach - this is strength! Hine ma tov umanim - how good and how beautiful it is for brothers and sisters to come together."
Mr. Denn said that "when G-d creates, it's aish - something from nothing," he said. "There are so many places in this community where we can see something, that without the support of Jaynie and Ron, would be nothing. The Schultz and Romaner families, who have forever changed the Jewish educational landscape in Dallas, New York, Israel, and around the world, embody the message of l'dor v'dor."
The Special Needs Partnership, support of communities in Israel's Partnership region, CJE's Learningfest, Akiba and Yavneh academies, and MyJewishDallas.org, are only a few of the programs that Jaynie and Ron have made their passion.
For Jaynie, the evening was "overwhelming," as she thanked the audience on behalf of she and her husband. In the audience were numerous family members including Yavneh supporters Leslie and Howard Schultz, and the couple's children Ben '12 (who flew home from his experience on Young Judaea YearCourse to share in the simcha), Dalya '14, Adina '16, and Micah '18. Among the guests were many Yavneh students, a number of whom volunteered to help direct guests throughout the evening.
"It's our tradition to be able to say hundreds of blessings in a day," said Jaynie
as she and Ron accepted a framed page of The Moss Haggadah created by artist David Moss - the one and the same "spiritual architect" of our Schultz Rosenberg Campus. "Today, we are able to say hundreds and hundreds of blessings because of a community like this one."
The evening's featured guest, introduced by Ron, was Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2005, and the Chief Rabbi since 1991, the rabbi, in Dallas for the very first time, has written 24 books.
"Judaism is the defeat of probability, by sheer possibility," said the Chief Rabbi, whom Jaynie and Ron first met when he spoke during a Pesach retreat the family attended in Arizona. "We are the most questioning people in history and we are a people of hope. It takes great courage to have hope, and no true Jew ever lost hope. It's not lost that the Israeli anthem, 'HaTikvah,' means 'the hope.'"
"Ashrei ha'am shekachalo," said the Chief Rabbi. "Happy are those who have people like these."
The Chief Rabbi spoke of how to Jews, schools are our citadels, teachers are our heroes, and education is our passion. "Where Jewish education is strong, Jewish life is strong!"
The examples set by their parents, Leslie & Howard to Jaynie, and by Ruth & Leon z"l Romaner to Ron, are those that indeed create the basis of l'dor v'dor. How blessed is Yavneh Academy to have this family open so many "dors," for us all.

Mitzvah Makers ~
Una Odakota - Remember our Friends ~ Warm article wrap-up ~
Denise Folz '16 has initiated a collection of jackets, scarves, sweaters, boots, socks, gloves, and hats for the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. All items collected will be sent to the Native American Heritage Association, for distribution, to this, one of the poorest counties in the country, where the average winter temperature is just 23 degrees.
Denise, who has visited a Native American reservation, and who hopes to one day become a writer and historian, has been inspired by the historical fiction books she read as a child and a Native American doll who has long been a "best friend." After researching the needs of the community, Denise determined it was hers to support.
Please donate items for warmth & comfort in the box in the Student Lounge thru December 20.
Kids Korner Collections ~
These animals need some friends!!! Yavneh's 2012 Stuffed Animal Drive is underway and the students of Kids Korner hope to surpass the 103 stuffed loves they collected last year. "People don't realize that stuffed animals make a huge difference to a child," said Rachel Rudberg '13. "The soft hug of an animal, character, or any fun stuffed toy really means a lot. It's a huge gift that doesn't have to cost much at all." Donations will be shared with our neighbors at Medical City Children's Hospital. Please donate new stuffed pals to the
Kids Korner box in the Yavneh's Main Office thru December 5.

From Emily Rohan '12, studying at the Tiferet Center, she and her classmates studying in various programs throughout Israel are all safe. This week brought a mini-reunion for Emily,
Ilana Wernick '12
(@ Midreshet Yeud), and
Coreen Golan '12
@ YJ YearCourse), as Coreen participated in a military graduation ceremony at the Kotel. Marking the end of seven weeks of training through Marva, an army simulation program run by the IDF and the Jewish Agency for Israel, the girls gathered in Jerusalem for hugs and smiles!
Asked about experiencing the recent crisis in person, Emily, who is based at Ramat Beis Shemesh - 40 minutes from Jerusalem and an hour from Tel Aviv, Emily said "I personally didn't hear any sirens but I definitely felt a country-wide unification being here. Everyone has a relative or friend in the IDF and so everyone is very supportive. While it was difficult not knowing what was happening from one day to the next, I never felt I was in danger."

"We're running to the bomb shelters a lot so that's not so fun, but we'll be ok.
