From the Head of School ~
    Dr. David Portnoy

Dear Yavneh Family,

Shalom from San logo bwAntonio, where

I am chaperoning fourteen stalwart Yavneh student journalists at the National High School Journalism Convention.

It's my first time in SA, and it's great to be here with such a terrific group of kids.

As many of you know, our student newspaper, The Bulldog Print, has a proud and storied (pun intended) history here on the Yavneh campus - as well as a national reputation for excellence.  From covering school, local, state and national news to sports, arts and tikkun olam, our student writers, editors and graphic artists enlighten and educate our community through skilled and timely reportage and commentary.

Our students (under my co-chaperone and newspaper advisor Ms. Hall-Chiles) work extremely hard brainstorming article ideas, researching, writing, and laying out multiple issues yearly, and it is noteworthy that many Yavneh alumni got their start in writing and journalism as staffers on our award-winning student paper.

Following a special visit to The Austin American Statesmen and arrival at SA's famed Riverwalk, we are looking forward to a great convention and Shabbat with Rabbi Shulkes.

Look for us late Sunday afternoon as we arrive back on campus, tired but fulfilled.

On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Thanksgiving.

Week in Review ~

Physics Eggsperiment ~

Directed by Yavneh's most eggcellent physics teachers, Lourdes Linzey and Joram Wolanow, our students cracked open their books, and minds, to create packaging for their raw eggs for the Great 2012 Egg Crash.  The assignment in Physics Kinematics was to create a design that would reduce the amount of deceleration upon impact via air drag techniques and/or cushioning.

"Our students learned about real life comparisons to understand this concept," said Ms. Linzey. "In the instance of automobile air bags, people in car crashes are often saved because of the increase of the time of impact when the person goes forward. That increase in time lowers the amount of force exerted on the person. Football players wear padding, to increase the time of impact and decrease the force making it less painful when they get tackled."

The students' creative packaging ranged from plain boxes filled with foam to unique peanut butter jars, balloon clusters, and even a four-layer-bagel cushioned sample. In pairs, students dropped their creations to the lobby pavement from Yavneh's second level balcony, twice each, then racing to see the result.

"I liked this project and thought it was a fun way to learn," said Hayden Berman '16 who turned a Pepsi bottle, trash bag and string into a parachute to cradle his raw egg, which he wrapped in newspaper. "I saw a Pepsi bottle on a table and thought that, if the egg was protected, it would sustain the force as it hit the ground."

"Most outcomes were astonishingly successful, as most students held their survived egg up high in a sign of victory and other students frowned as the wet messes, and prospect of cleanup, were revealed," said Mr. Wolanow noting that more than two-thirds of the eggs survived. "This is a great experiment and lesson that students and the teachers enjoy. It's terrific to watch
the kids using their creativity to grasp the concept."

Sharsheret Pink Day

Yavneh's '12 Pink Day, to benefit Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer, found many shades of pink canvassing the halls.

Bow ties, shawls, backpacks, socks, boots, skirts, and shirts made their debut as Yavneh's students and faculty raised money, and awareness, of this important cause.

"I'm so proud that everyone participated! It's great to see how many people care about the cancer fighting community," said senior Kayley Romick who organized the event and whose Grandmother, Lynn Romick z"l, passed away from breast cancer.

"I know this is a personal issue for many staff members and students, including in my own family," said Kayley who will pass the PINK torch to her sister Serina after she graduates.
"It's great to see so much support for the cause."

Kids Korner Collections ~

These animals need some friends!!!

Yavneh's 2012 Stuffed Animal Drive is underway and the students of Kids Korner hope to surpass the 103 stuffed loves they collected last year.

"People don't realize that stuffed animals make a huge difference to a child," said Rachel Rudberg '13.  "The soft hug of an animal, character, or any fun stuffed toy really means a lot.  It's a huge gift that doesn't have to cost much at all."

Donations will be shared with our neighbors at Medical City Children's Hospital.

Please donate new stuffed pals to the
Kids Korner box in the Yavneh's Main Office thru December 5.

Nurse's Corner ~

The "flu" season is officially underway. Dallas County has only reported a few cases, thankfully. Individuals who received their vaccine at least two weeks ago can breathe a sigh of relief, because it takes about two weeks to build immunity. The vaccine is necessary each year because the influenza virus changes, sometimes significantly, from year to year.

The vaccine comes in two basic forms-the shot and nasal spray. The "shot" contains killed virus and the nasal spray contains weakened live virus. Neither vaccine causes influenza. To make the vaccine, influenza virus is grown in hens' eggs. Recent studies have documented safe receipt of the flu shot in persons with egg allergy; only a severe allergic reaction is reason to withhold the flu vaccine.

The holidays are a time for friends and family to gather, sharing conversation, good food, and potentially the influenza virus. Reduce risk by getting vaccine protection. Children and adults who are vaccinated will also provide added protection for the infants and grandparents who might be at the gatherings-age groups that have the highest rates of complications from the disease.

It's not too late to vaccinate! Contact your doctor for more information.

Be well,
