From the Head of School ~ Dr. David Portnoy
Dear Yavneh Family,

It's been said that every rabbi has but one sermon that he or she gives over and over again. The same can be said for headmasters, and here is mine (in the same terms
I use with the students):
Your health and safety are preconditions for
everything you hope to achieve. In the words of my grandmother, of blessed memory, "When you have your health, you have everything." With the year's first wave of illnesses to affect our Yavneh teachers and students, our focus on health and wellness are at the forefront of our community concerns.
Every day at Yavneh, we come together as a community during Mincha and Friday family time, and we share simchas and updates, meeting reminders and announcements, and yes, even a joke or two (always clean and suitable for the Shabbat table ;o). And woven throughout our community time are discussions about healthy behaviors, sleep, diet, exercise and other wellness-related topics. From drug and alcohol talk, to safe driving, to the latest research on adolescent development, our actions and words are informed by a steadfast commitment to our students' well-being.
One of the most important blessings of Shabbat is menucha (rest). And while recent studies in sleep hygiene (a term with which our students are familiar) have indicated that people are best served getting eight hours of sleep nightly, Shabbat and the weekend do serve as an important time during which our teenage children can catch up on some of their missed and much needed rest. As we continue to learn more about how sleep affects us (Starbucks is not a real solution), let us remember that teenagers, more than most, need their sleep.
On behalf of our students, faculty and staff, we wish you a peaceful and healthy
Shabbat Shalom, ~~ Dr. P

Class of 2013 ~ Jordan Haberer
"Yavneh is Friendly. Accommodating. Homey. "
Joining the Yavneh Family at the start of his Junior year, as his family moved to the area from St. Petersburg, Florida, Jordan was happy to find a small school with a friendly atmosphere. "From the beginning there has been no pressure here," said Jordan. "I've made really good friends in the last year, and even though many of my classmates have known each other for much of their lives, they have been open and welcoming. I really feel a part of it all and I'm so glad for the experience - it really has been perfect.
"Jordan has been a great addition to our student body and, since transferring, has proven to be a great fit here," said Dr. Tim Cloward, Yavneh's Assistant Principal. "He is modest and unassuming, but also very intelligent, and he gets along with everybody."
"The faculty here is incredible and I think that, even with a dual-curriculum, which requires shorter class times, the courses are more thoroughly taught," said Jordan. "It's not always easy to balance the schedule, but the teachers definitely do their best to keep us going, many making their classes fun and interesting."
"Jordan is a quiet and conscientious student who was fun to teach. He is a gracious and gentle young man who cares about other students and about his teachers," said Don O'Quinn, former Head of School and physics teacher. "Teaching, my most pleasant task of every day, I always looked forward to his being in my class."
Already accepted to the University of Kansas, with applications also submitted to George Mason University, Florida State University, and Indiana University, Jordan looks to a future - appropriate this week - in politics. "I was a fan of Romney but I'm hopeful that President Obama will lead us in the right direction," said Jordan who shares great interest in the Civil War, has toured many of the original battle sites. Perhaps a future leader of our state or country, Jordan looks forward someday to being part of the process.
A native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, Jordan is the son of Elizabeth and Stefan and the younger brother of Allison, the family associated with Congregation Anshai Torah. Prior to moving to Dallas, Jordan was a member of the Varsity Wrestling Team at Admiral Farragut Academy, and a volunteer at the All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.
A member of Yavneh's Yearbook Crew, and not one not to sit idle, off-Campus Jordan has enjoyed working at Best Buy, and now GameStop. Jordan, an alumnus of the French Woods Performance Arts Camp in New York, "the greatest place to go," also makes a monthly trip to Houston to volunteer with his uncle, hosting programs for the Down Syndrome Association of Houston.

Shabbat Shalom ~
On this, the 64th anniversary of Krystallnacht - a night filled with purposeful acts of hatred, today's Mishpachot Morning was dedicated to the concept of "random acts of kindness," as discussed in the Torah (Bereishit 24:0-27 and Shemot 22:20). "As Jews, it is within us as a People, really throughout history to give to those in need," said Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Associate Principal/Judaic Curriculum. "As we had the opportunity last week, with our new - but unexpected guests from the Kushner Academy - it was 'the obvious' to us to reach out and and help in whatever way we could." Students viewed the video Simple Acts of Kindness and then, in their groups of mishpachot, shared the ways in which they purposefully have helped others, and experiences they've witnessed where being nice, "just happened." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From our Judaic Desk ~
Please mark your calendars for this Saturday, November 10 @ 7:30pm, for the first session of our Mishmar class. The student body is invited to share an evening of learning and pizza. Please also note December 1 @ 7pm, the Yavneh Family, parents, students and faculty are invited to a Melaveh Malkah with learning, havdalah, and food before the Yavneh Bulldogs play the St. Marks.
We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah and this week's
Snappy Sentiments and that share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!
Shabbat Shalom ~
Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Week in Review ~
"Poetry is a way to jump the gap between ourselves and to share what you can't always speak." That the message of Lisa Huffaker, one of eight guests to lead Yavneh's fourteenth annual Poetry Day. "Through poetry, we can cultivate an appreciation for language, zooming in the lens for any given moment."
 |
Dr. Tim Cloward and Alan Gann
Rebecca Balcarcel, Lisa Huffaker, Chris Soden, Evan Cleveland, and Joaquin Zihuatanejo
Will Richey and Alejandro Perez
|
A classical singer and award-winning poet, Ms. Huffaker joined Rebecca Balcarcel, Evan Cleveland, Alan Gunn, Alejandro Perez, Will Richey, Chris Soden Joaquin Zihuatanejo, invited by Yavneh's own poet laureate, also known as Assistant Principal, Dr. Tim Cloward, led workshops for students, sharing their own work and inspiring students to do the same.

"Poetry is a spoken art form and it doesn't exist until it's spoken aloud and another hears it," said Alan Gann, of the afternoon of literary license. "When you speak it, or hear it, you are co-creating the poem with the one who put the words on paper."
For Joaquin Zihuatanejo, a National Poetry Slam Finalist, Grand Slam Spoken Word Champion, HBO Def Poet, and award-winning teacher, let the students in his workshop with three rules of poetry:
1) write about what you know; your Grandmother's kitchen or the alley behind the bus stop near your home. 2) make it odd - the norm, what you've heard - you've already heard, so why write it again? 3) always read more than you write "The poetry being written today, here in America and around the world is great and you have so much access to it," said Mr. Zihuatanejo. "You can facebook, twitter, you can write to the poets and they'll respond. This is an incredible time to be alive!"
It was Will Richey's words of prose, and the recognition that "poetry is life and life is poetry when you put it together," that inspired Yavneh senior Mika Stein to, in a few short moments, create his own masterpiece, a masterpiece that indeed brings poetry, and life together as one.Gathering together at the end of the creative workshops, the students had the opportunity to hear original works by our guests. Will Richey and Alejandro Perez had the room snapping, clapping, and tapping as all shared in a chorus of their meaningful piece:
"Most High, teach us how to move for what's in time and space,
Most High, teach us to walk in the Creator's place,
Most High, teach us to keep a smile upon our face,
Most High, teach us to understand we have no time to waste.
 | |
"Kangarooooooooooooo!"
|
"Poetry and creative writing allows you to realize that, amidst all of the activities and academic work that is required of you, each of you is an artist," said Dr. Cloward, himself a published poet, playwright, and literary critic. "It's important to realize the creative being that is within you."
