Dear Yavneh Family,

It's great to be back in school! I hope you all had a wonderful Sukkot holiday, as my reports from the students seem to indicate.  Other that having to wake up early again, they all seem eager and optimistic to be back at Yavneh following a joyous Simchat Torah.

Classes and activities are back in full swing (that's my lab coat from our sophomore Chemistry "Meeting of the Minds" extravaganza), with teamspracticing and student journalists putting the first issue of The Bulldog Print to press.  We are all gearing up for our first Shabbaton of the year next weekend, which should be a great event as well.

Please spread the word about our Open House on October 23 at 7pm.  If you know a family that would be a good fit for Yavneh, please encourage them to attend this terrific evening, which features faculty presentations, student tour guides and a great opportunity to visit our magnificent campus.

On behalf of our entire faculty and staff,
we wish you Shabbat Shalom!!!

Shabbat Shalom ~

Rabbi David J. Singer
Associate Rabbi
Congregation Shearith Israel
Bruchim Habaim to Rabbi David Singer, newly transplanted to Dallas as Associate Rabbi at
Congregation Shearith Israel.    Rabbi Singer spoke of this week's parsha B'reshit, suggesting that while we usually learn about the creation of the world, we don't stop to think how itwas created.  "G-d spoke, and from His words, the world came to be," said Rabbi Singer.  "It wasn't that G-d willed it to happen - it wasn't magic, the words came from him and so did the creation of our beautiful world."

"Words have a profound power and we must always be aware of the possibility our words can create, and, unfortunately, they can destroy.  We can be meaningful with our words, and we can destroy or be destroyed.  Focus on ways to uplift people with your words, rather than to allow anyone to be hurt.  Learn from the beauty of bringing goodness into being, and tell people about the good they've done.  Bring honor to those to whom you speak to, or that you speak about."

We hope you enjoy the Dvar Torah and this week's Snappy Sentiments
and that share and discuss them at your Shabbat table!

   Shabbat Shalom  ~

Rabbi Meir Tannenbaum, Naomi Schrager, and the Judaic Studies Faculty.

Kol haKavod to Dania Tanur '14, dedicated to providing Yavneh's Student Challenge

program - the spark ignited last year by Associate Principal/Judaic Programming, Naomi Schrager.  What started as an occasional "think" moment, has become a regular program with Dania as its steward.

"I liked the idea of taking the thoughts we have during davening; of faith, of thinking about how we can be better people, children, students, and friends, and making that something we think about more than 'just' at davening," said Dania who posts each challenge on Yavneh's bulletin boards.

"Every two weeks I announce a new challenge - today's is to give ourselves the opportunity to be better by how we react to situations," said Dania - previous challenges have included

We might not be able to control all the situations we find ourselves in,  but we can choose how we respond, how we speak, and what we do."
