Cultural Road Trip: Ipswich 
QUICK TAKE: Charming coastal town known for its array of early Colonial houses. SEE & DO: Start at the Great House and a grand ocean view at the Crane Estate; house & landscape tours through Oct 18th. Dip your toes in the Atlantic at spectacular Crane Beach, then pick up warm cider donuts at Russell Orchards. Hear the stories behind Ipswich's architectural heritage with an audio walking tour. Rent a canoe from Foote Brothers and explore the Ipswich River. Landscapes are the focus of the Special Places photography exhibit at the Ipswich Museum. The Annual Harvest Festival takes place on the Sturbridge Town Common and grounds of the Publick House Historic Inn, October 18-19. Featuring over 50 local crafters, artisans, specialty food vendors, music, cider, farm fresh harvests and more, it's a great way to spend a crisp autumn day in New England. Fringe theater takes over Greenfield at The Double Take Fringe Festival October 17-18! Enjoy eight short shows in eight different venues, all in walking distance. See as many as you can! Greater Boston

October (almost) brings too many choices, from Verdi's tragic La Traviata to the musical playground of the 9th Annual HONK! Festival and lots in between. Head of the Charles Regatta returns for its 50th race and there are more Oktoberfests in and around Boston than in Germany! Author and comedian David Sedaris is in town, and you'll want to bookmark October 23-25 for the Boston Book Festival. Ringling Brothers' Circus entertains, as does ArtWeek and the Fenway's Opening Our Doors (October 13th) invites all to experience this culturally and artistically rich neighborhood with FREE workshops, performances, exhibitions, walking tours and even indoor kite flying. Cape Cod
Fall for the Arts from October 4-November 1 on Cape Cod! Highlights include live performances by local musicians, open houses at cultural venues, readings & lectures, art activities for children, guided heritage walks, plein air painters, special exhibits and more! Greater Springfield

During the month of October, families can enjoy thrills by day and frights by night at "Frighfest" at Six Flags NE! The 20th Annual Paradise City Arts Festival (October 11-13) at Three County Fairgrounds in Northampton features museum quality crafts, art and sculpture, and the Yankee Candle Columbus Day Fall Festival (October 11-13) at Yankee Candle Village includes face painting, hay rides and more. Hampshire County
The historic Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton will have a world premiere and its first commissioned play on stage October 17th and 18th. Nobody's Girl is a screwball comedy based on real events in the theater's history during WWII. This premiere also serves as the grand reopening of the Academy following summertime auditorium renovations, restoring it to all its historic glory. Johnny Appleseed Country
Curtains up! October marks both the peak of foliage viewing and a busy theater season in Johnny Appleseed Country. From the epic tale of the French Revolution portrayed in "Les Miserables" to Agatha Christie's "A Murder is Announced," a panorama of entertainment awaits theater-goers this fall. Gardner's spacious Theatre at the Mount is the setting for "Les Mis," while an array of productions are offered in more intimate settings throughout the region. Martha's Vineyard

Mohawk Trail Region
Join us for the 2014 Fall Foliage Parade, scheduled for Sunday, October 5th! This year's theme celebrates the adventure and culture that people have experienced on the Mohawk Trail over the last century, allowing everyone to pay homage to the communities that have made it possible with the theme "100th Anniversary of the Mohawk Trail." The parade steps off from the Ocean State Job Lot / Tractor Supply Company parking lot at 1 p.m., and proceeds through downtown North Adams. Find more information on the Mohawk Trail Region
MetroWest

Fall means festivals in MetroWest! On October 4th, enjoy the 12-hour Oktoberfest in Hopedale, one of the region's largest gatherings with a bier garden, multiple stages for musical performers, a car show, crafters, and petting zoo. The next day (October 5th), choose from the Harvest Festival in downtown Franklin, the Heritage Festival on Marlborough's Main Street, and the 3rd Annual Farm Pond Festival in downtown Framingham. Nantucket Island

The Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents "RED" by John Logan through October 11th. "RED" is a searing portrait of bad boy artist Mark Rothko's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. Paint collides with canvas live on stage, as masterpieces are born and torn down in a visceral experience that spills off the stage and forever changes the way you see red. North of Boston
Visit the Topsfield Fair from October 3rd through October 13th! Experience America's oldest agricultural fair as you interact with agricultural animals in their many barns, indulge in delicious food, enjoy the rides, try your luck at midway games, and so much more. Plymouth County

Art is alive in Plymouth this October! On October 2nd,  Yoron Israel & Organic Perform returns to play artKitchen Café at Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton. On October 5th, come out for the annual "Arts By The Bog" Festival at Flax Pond  Cranberry Farm in Carver as artists, craftspeople, & artisans display and sell their handmade items. On October 11th, Howie Day with Ayla Brown Day is back on the road with old favorites and new material. And October 18th is Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra's Opening Night, featuring Sonic Treasures Tchaikovsky's Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture and Smetana's The Moldau! Southeastern Massachusetts
Phoebus Ensemble, a duo comprised by clarinetist Igor Begelman and bassoonist Larisa Gelman, will be playing works by Bach, Chopin, Poulenc and other masters during this month's Arts in the Village on Saturday, October 4th at 7:30 p.m. at Goff Hall in Rehoboth! Both musicians have earned successful solo careers, playing for distinguished orchestras like I Musici de Montreal, Houston Symphony, Brooklyn Symphony and Broadway Bach Ensemble. Take a wildlife expedition through the galleries when Festival of Trees 2014 On Safari opens at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield on Friday evening, November 14th! Festival of Trees 2014 On Safari will be on view to the public from Saturday, November 15, 2014, through January 4, 2015. The annual holiday event will feature more than 100 dazzling, delightful holiday trees decorated to evoke an exotic safari adventure. Don't forget your binoculars! Greater Merrimack Valley
Fall is the perfect time to take a walk through our literary history!  Greater Merrimack Valley was home to some of American history's greatest writers, artists and thinkers, who helped to define the American identity and culture including Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorn, Jack Kerouac and James McNeil Whistler. On October 9-12, come celebrate one of the most important American authors of the 20th century as Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! Festival with poetry readings, jazz, art exhibits and more.
