CULTURAL ROAD TRIP: STURBRIDGE AREA

QUICK TAKE: Immerse yourself in 1830s village life at Old Sturbridge Village, then explore the region's charming towns and back roads. SEE & DO: Experience the old-fashioned Agricultural Exhibition at Old Sturbridge Village, September 14-15. See master potters at work at Sturbridge Pottery. Check out The Book Bear for used, rare and out-of-print books. Pencil in a visit to Tantiusques, a loop trail through woodlands to the site of a former Native American graphite mine. SHOW OF SHOWS: The Brimfield Antique Show, September 3-8, claims to be the largest outdoor antique show in the country: thousands of dealers; museum-quality antiques to quirky treasures. Fall is a season of celebration as we highlight our rich cultural heritage at the 6th Annual Fall for the Arts Festival from September 28-November 2 across the Cape and Islands! This month-long event showcases the best of the region's arts and culture, including live performances by local musicians, open houses at cultural venues, readings & lectures, art activities for children, guided art & heritage walks, plein air painters, special exhibits and more! Presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, in partnership with the Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket Chambers of Commerce and others.  

 

Also mark your calendar for the annual Eastham Windmill Weekend on September 6-8, and the 44th Annual Bourne Scallop Festival in Buzzards Bay Park September 20-22. Click here for a full list of fall events!

Greater Springfield

The Big E comes to West Springfield on September 13-29! New England's largest Fair offers not only a midway, agricultural exhibits and shopping, it also features top entertainment (Don Felder, The Beach Boys, Darlene Love, Hunter Hayes), endless food options, a daily circus, arts and crafts, horse shows and the Storrowton Village Museum.  Catch "Treasures of the Hard Rock," a special collection of iconic music memorabilia including The Beatles, Katy Perry and everything in-between.

Hampshire County
How about apple picking with a little art on the side? Check out Art in the Orchard, a multifaceted sculpture exhibition on the grounds of Park Hill Orchard in Easthampton! The core project is a sculpture trail showcasing 3-dimensional outdoor works and installations created by local and regional artists open to the public daily. Additional events such as music, moonlight walks and performances are scheduled during most weekends through the festival's close on October 31st.

Johnny Appleseed Country

Harvest time is festival season in Johnny Appleseed Country! Enjoy the agricultural bounty of the region, along with an abundance of music and a vast array of work by local artisans and craftspeople this fall. Get a taste of the region at the Appleseed Country Fair in Phillipston on September 7th & 8th; Wachusett Mountain's MusicFest, Kids Fest, AppleFest and BBQ Fest; and the Blacksmith Art & Music Festival at Fitchburg's Riverfront Park on September 28th.

Martha's Vineyard
The 2013 Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival will be held September 5-8 in Vineyard Haven! Join us for four days filled with the best feature and short films from top-notch festivals such as Sundance, Berlin and Cannes (with a few undiscovered gems thrown in!), great evening events, provocative forums and live world music. Ninety percent of all film selections are non-US productions, helping to fulfill the festival mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding through film.

Mohawk Trail Region
The Old Deerfield Craft Fair will be celebrated September 21-22! With New England in its autumnal splendor, the village setting for the Fall Arts and Craft Fair couldn't be more picturesque. This award-winning show has been recognized for its traditional crafts (#2 in New England) and fine arts categories (ranked 7th in N.E.) and offers a great variety from furniture to pottery and fine arts. Located at \10 Memorial Street in Deerfield. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Go online for a discount coupon!

MetroWest
In MetroWest, autumn is a festival, kicked off by Food Truck Festivals of New England at Natick Town Common on September 8th from noon to 5 p.m. Over 10,000 people are expected to taste the offerings from dozens of trucks with exotic and regional fare! Take a free shuttle from Natick High School to the Common. If you're still hungry, head to Northborough for Applefest, three days of eating, games, races, and entertainment September 20-22.

Nantucket Island
The 2013 Nantucket Maritime Festival will take place on Saturday, September 21st from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Children's Beach & Brant Point. The festival celebrates the joy of living on an island! Experience time-honored maritime activities on and beside the sea that surrounds it. The festival will be packed with free activities for the whole family, build your own boat races, oyster shucking contests, entertainment by maritime musical groups, kid's activity tent and paddleboarding!

North of Boston

A tradition for nearly 200 years, the Topsfield Fair is an Essex County staple!  The oldest fair in America, the Topsfield Fair is 10 days of fun for the whole family.  From the record-breaking giant pumpkin contest and sand sculpture exhibit to the mouth-watering food, countless rides, and concerts by such performers as Bobby Vinton, Cher Llyod, Tate Stevens, and many more, this year's fair is not to miss!  Head down to the fair October 4-14.

Plymouth County

Come experience "Something FISHY GOING on," a group exhibition of Fishy Art on display now through September 15th at the Artist Exposure Gallery in the Waterworks Building on Howland Street in Plymouth! High-tide brings sea whimsy indoors with featured artists Teresa Mowery, Joe Higgins, Bryan Randa, Linda Vopat, Ronn Cartier Perry, Joan Welch, Jonathan Bowling and Leslie Berman, showing a variety of media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, sculpture, color, photography and patina-finished metal work.

Southeastern Massachusetts

The Working Waterfront Festival takes place on September 28-29 in New Bedford! This award-winning, family friendly event features music, children's activities, cooking demonstrations, vessel and harbor tours, contests, author readings, film screenings, crafts and local seafood. Enjoy live music at the Narrows Festival of the Arts on September 8th on Fall River's historic waterfront. This premier festival also features a wide variety of art, local food and more. Both events are free!

The Berkshires

North Adams Open Studios opens its doors for you to celebrate a weekend of art with artists from the cultural hub of North Adams, exhibiting their work! Open Studios 2013 takes place on Saturday, October 19th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  During this free event for the arts, established, mid-career and emerging artists working in a broad spectrum of fine art styles and craft media will open their studios to the public, and be available for conversations about their work.

Greater Merrimack Valley

Kick off autumn with a day of great jazz at the Merrimack Valley Jazz Festival at Lowell's Boarding House Park on September 21st from noon to 6 pm! Enjoy live music, sketch artists and dance performances. On October 5 & 6, visit Lowell's Citywide Open Studios and see the studios of more than 200 artists, purchase original artwork and enjoy art-related events.

Central Massachusetts
Enjoy entertainment, food and raffles at the Blackstone Canal Festival on September 7th! It will showcase the history of Harding Street and will provide free family fun all day long.  Then re-live one of the most important moments in history at the Civil War Reenactment on October 11-13! Begin the weekend off in costume at the "Gone with the Wind" Ball and continue with the 'Living History' reenactment at Worcester's own Green Hill Park.

Franklin County

The North Quabbin Garlic & Arts Festival - also known as "the festival that stinks!" - will be held October 5th and 6th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (rain or shine) at Forster's Farm in Orange. Join this celebration of the artistic, agricultural and cultural bounty of the region! The festival emphasizes what is homegrown, handmade and high quality, and also helps preserve and support the environment and the community. An engaging, fun and educational celebration for all ages!

Greater Boston

While September heralds the close of summer, the good news is the Performing Arts Season opens! Choices range from Boston Symphony performances to Boston Calling, two-days, two-stages (9/7 & 9/8), from the Bean Town Jazz Festival (9/28) to the final al fresco concerts at the BOA Pavilion. Wicked flies through the 15th, curtains rise for the timeless Jungle Book on the 7th and a spell is cast with Potted Potter beginning the 17th.  New this year is ARTWEEK, curated arts, culture & entertainment experiences throughout the city September 27th through October 6th.
