CULTURAL ROAD TRIP: North Adams

QUICK TAKE: Massachusetts' smallest city is a hub for contemporary art, galleries, and indie music. SEE & DO: MASS MoCA is spectacular: large-scale, cutting-edge art in super-sized industrial galleries.  DownStreet Art presents themed exhibitions, video screenings, and site-specific installations. In October, the city's artists roll out the welcome mat at Open Studios. SOUNDS LIKE FUN: The 12th Annual Bang on a Can Summer Festival at MASS MoCA ends August 3rd with a 6-hour, day-night marathon concert. The  FreshGrass Bluegrass Festival (September 20-22) fills every corner of the museum with toe-tapping music. EAT & SLEEP: Dine on contemporary American cuisine at PUBLIC eat+drink; enjoy the retro, granny-chic charm of the  Porches Inn.
  
Featured Region: Greater Boston

Boston is a wonderful summertime playground. The city is alive with exhibitions, theatrical and musical performances and festivals! Enjoy classic movies al fresco at the Prudential Center Garden, on the terrace at the Boston Harbor Hotel or at the beloved Hatch Shell. Beginning August 7th, "Wicked" flies into Boston, Cavalia's "Odysseo" entertains under the big top and Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake score the hits at Fenway Park on August 10th.  BLINK! illuminates the city skyline nightly at Faneuil Hall Marketplace and it's easy to be green at Boston GreenFest, August 15-17.  The roof of the ICA is transformed into an urban cliff jump as divers plunge 80 feet into Boston Harbor on the 24th.  And remember to save room for dessert at the annual Restaurant Week Boston August 18-30, when over 190 restaurants serve up cool food at very cool prices!

Cape Cod

The Citizens Bank 28th Annual Pops by the Sea outdoor concert will be held on the Hyannis Village Green on Sunday, August 11th! Relax to the sounds of the Boston Pops, with special celebrity guest conductor Blythe Danner. Order tickets today at artsfoundation.org! Then, enjoy the beats of the 9th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival on August 17th at Provincetown Town Hall and on August 19th at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Featuring renowned jazz musicians from around the world!

Greater Springfield

Springfield Museums are celebrating the mild and the wild!  "Amazing Butterflies" is an interactive maze that shows the life cycle of one of nature's most delicate inhabitants (through September 2nd), while "Worn to Be Wild: The Black Leather Jacket" salutes one of the most iconic pieces of clothing in pop culture, from its beginnings as functional outerwear to its current status as a symbol of rebellion, sex appeal and rugged individuality (through September 22nd).

Hampshire County
August is the last full month to take a trip to San Francisco in the sixties without leaving Massachusetts-and without a time machine! Summer of Love: Psychedelic Posters from the Smith College Museum of Art explores the American counterculture through a popular visual medium that vividly evokes this particular place and time. Summer of Love is on view through September 15th, with Free Second Friday happenings August 9th and September 13th. For hours and admission info, click here.

Johnny Appleseed Country

The downtown districts in Johnny Appleseed Country offer intriguing opportunities to enjoy art that spans the ages, from ancient Egyptian sculptures to contemporary watercolors. Make downtown your destination this month: Stop by the new Leominster Art Center & Gallery at 45 Main Street; the Museum of Russian Icons and the Gallery of African Art in Clinton; Rollstone Studios on Main Street in Fitchburg; or the Fitchburg Art Museum, located just a block away. There's always something new to see in Johnny Appleseed Country!

Martha's Vineyard
The 152nd Annual Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair will be held August 15-18! Enjoy rides, games, live music, livestock, competitions, craft demonstrations, food, shopping, art show, and awards for homegrown vegetables, fruits, flowers and homemade goodies. And of course, the ever popular pig races and dog show. Cost is $10 adults, $5 kids 5-12, and seniors. 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day on the fairgrounds in West Tisbury.

Mohawk Trail Region
Winslow Homer, West Point, Prout's Neck, 1900. Clark Art Institute
Williamstown's Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute holds one of the greatest collections of works by Winslow Homer of any art museum in the United States! This summer, the Clark is presenting a major exhibition of these works in "Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History", on view through September 8th. Drawing upon the resources of the Clark's own holdings of nearly 250 works by Homer, the exhibition provides a variety of distinctive perspectives on one of the greatest American artists.

MetroWest
Summer is so good in MetroWest that you can taste it - literally!  On August 9th, head to the 5th Annual All-American Craft Beer & Food Experience at Wayside Inn in Sudbury. A $30 ticket provides unlimited fare, washed down with $3 seasonal selections from Samuel Adams Brewery.  But save room for the Spirit of Hudson Food & Brewfest on August 17th, beginning at 3pm in downtown Hudson. Advance-purchase tickets are $15 for food or $25 for food and beer from 25 breweries.

Nantucket Island
The 2013 Antiques & Design Show on Nantucket, happening August 1-5, is the highlight of the summer season! The 36th Annual Show will present a wonderful week of parties, lectures, and activities. This is one of the most highly regarded antiques events on the East Coast, attracting collectors and enthusiasts to the island. Experience outstanding music and a stunning fireworks display on August 10th at the 17th annual Boston Pops Concert. Bring a picnic and enjoy an evening of great entertainment!

North of Boston

Wedding bells are ringing at the Lynn Museum! "Tying the Knot" showcases wonderful gowns (from the museum's expansive Textile Collection) worn by Lynn brides over the past century.  Admire the intricate details and see how trends have changed over the years! This exhibit also includes vintage wedding photographs from the Museum collection and submitted by the Lynn Community. Say "I do!" at the Lynn Museum now through September 28th. No RSVPs or registry gifts required!

Plymouth County

Enjoy Bluegrass in Tihonet Village on Saturday, August 24th in Wareham from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sit back on the lawn and listen to the sweet sounds of bluegrass! Local bands will be performing throughout the day, food will be available onsite, and don't miss your chance listen to the tunes while cruising around Tihonet Pond in a duck or swan paddle boat! Southeastern Massachusetts

The 10th Annual South Coast Artists Studio Tour will be held August 17-18! The self-guided tour will take you across small highways and rural byways of stunning natural beauty. Along the way you'll discover the work of welcoming artists working in such diverse mediums as oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography, sculpture, basketry, fiber arts, ceramics, glass, wood, metal, jewelry, paper and mixed media. Free and open to the public!

The Berkshires

The Country Fair at Hancock Shaker Village in September celebrates the bounty of the harvest with agricultural demonstrations, a Farmers Market, and huge tents full of the best local and regional crafters! The Country Fair has something for everyone - a Kids Tent with traditional games and crafts, pony rides, antique tractors and engines, a display of antique and newly made quilts, and a Pie Contest! Fair dates are September 28-29, 10 a.m. to 5 pm. both days.

Greater Merrimack Valley

Enjoy culinary delights in the Greater Merrimack Valley this August! Franklin County

Double Edge Theater in Ashfield, in association with Charlestown Working Theater, presents  "Shahrazad: A Tale of Love and Magic" as its  2013 Indoor/Outdoor Summer Spectacle - now through August 19th! Performances are held Wednesdays-Sundays at 8 p.m. (rain or shine). Drawn from the mystical tales of The Arabian Nights, this year's spectacle incorporates elements of poetry, flight, live music and the visual arts to take audiences on a journey through Shahrazad's mesmerizing stories.
