CULTURAL ROAD TRIP: Worcester

On tap: Art, armor and a dazzling array of music, dance and theater. SEE & DO: The Worcester Art Museum is a hidden gem; Kennedy to Kent State (through June 9th) is a visual flashback to the 60s. The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts buzzes with concerts, plays, comedy, musicals and dance. Mechanics Hall is recognized as one of the world's great concert halls for its acoustics and 19th-century elegance; the thoroughly modern DCU Center is a popular entertainment and sports venue. The Higgins Armory is a knight in shining armor. Its steel and glass art-deco building showcases arms and armor from medieval and Renaissance Europe. The Narrows Center for the Arts at 16 Anawan Street in Fall River has an exciting line-up for the month of March, with performances by Ed Kowalczyk (singer and songwriting force behind multi-platinum rock band Live) on March 2nd; "Forever Young: A Tribute to Neil Young" on March 8-9; Harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite on March 13th; award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier on March 15th; 2013 Grammy nominee Joan Osborne on March 21st; and award-winning Hawaiian performers HAPA on March 29th - among others! The Berkshires

"Cirque Shanghai: BAI XI" - coming to The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington on April 26th - is a spectacular production combining astounding Chinese acrobatics, fast-paced action and contemporary staging! Greater Merrimack Valley

On March 16 and 17, Lexington will celebrate Incorporation Weekend, recalling its incorporation as a town in 1713! Everyone is invited to participate in LexCelebrate!, a two-day festival similar to Boston's First Night. Enjoy talks, panels, activities, demonstrations, meet a minuteman, and sample great tastes at the food festival. It will all be topped off by an intergenerational "300th Dance Around the World" on Saturday evening!

Central Massachusetts
Music Worcester announces the return of the internationally known and acclaimed fiddler, Natalie MacMaster! Along with her band, MacMaster has previously shared the stage with a variety of amazing musicians like Santana, Paul Simon, Faith Hill, The Chieftains and dozens of symphony orchestras. The "Celtic Fiddler from Cape Breton" will be appearing on March 22nd at Mechanics Hall. Tickets are available at www.musicworcester.org.

Greater Boston

The perfect combination of gourmet food and the arts awaits the visitor to Boston on March 17-22 & 24-29 at Restaurant Week Boston!  More than 200 restaurants will offer three-course prix-fixe gourmet lunches for $20.13 and three-course prix-fixe dinners for $38.13. Cape Cod

Don your green for the 8th annual Cape Cod St. Patrick's Day Parade in Yarmouth & Dennis on Saturday, March 9th! Bruins legend Derek "Turk" Sanderson will serve as Grand Marshal of the festive parade, which kicks off at 11 a.m.  On March 12th, the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis debuts the exhibit "The Art of the Catboat." The Catboat was the inspiration that boatbuilder Joseph Keveney drew upon when designing three of his models, built from 1936-1942 and on loan to the museum!

Greater Springfield
Springfield Museums celebrate
iconic images this March! Currently on display is "The John F. Kennedy Experience," with rarely seen photos and memorabilia related to the President and First Lady (now through April 28th).  "GUITAR: The Image That Rocked the World" features celebrity guitars, interactives, audio, video and the world's largest playable guitar (now through April 21st), and "The Beatles! Backstage and Behind the Scenes" has 84 never-before-published photographs of the hit makers (March 12-June 2). Photo courtesy Springfield Museums.

Hampshire County
The Spring Bulb Show at Smith College is an annual tradition that's lasted more than a century! Over 5,000 bulbs, which ordinarily bloom at different times, are coaxed into a simultaneous blooming for this spectacular burst of spring featuring crocuses, hyacinths, narcissi, irises, lilies and tulips. The Bulb Show is open to the public daily March 2-17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Friday evening hours on March 8th and 15th from 4 to 8 p.m. The suggested donation is $2.

Johnny Appleseed Country

Underscoring its position in the cultural fabric of Johnny Appleseed Country, Fitchburg State University keeps its finger on the pulse of contemporary art - demonstrated this month with "When the Wheels Fall Off," an exhibition of works by David Preston Wells! Opening on March 6th with a talk by the artist, the exhibition in the Saunders Administration Building encompasses visual snippets collected over time into compositions that "create stereoscopic glimpses of inherited past/present narratives."

Martha's Vineyard

The Martha's Vineyard Independent Film Festival is happening March 15-17! Mohawk Trail Region

On April 6th, MASS MoCA welcomes a trifecta of new exhibitions - "Mark Dion: The Octagon Room," "One Minute Film Festival: 10 Years," and "Life's Work: Tom Phillips and Johnny Carrera" - and bids a fond farewell to "Oh, Canada" with an evening of stylish fun. Join us to honor three new exhibitions with two festive parties - cocktails among the art, a rollicking dance party in the Hunter Center, our premier performing arts venue, and one gala benefit dinner in our largest gallery.

MetroWest

Over 1,200 people will be enjoying delicious and generous cuisine from almost 100 of the area's finest restaurants, caterers, gourmet and ethnic markets, gift boutiques, wineries, brew houses and local purveyors of fine liquors at the third annual Taste of MetroWest, to be held at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center on March 12th from 5 to 8 p.m. Nick Wilson, a rising star chef 

from the House of Blues will demonstrate his cooking prowess. $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

Nantucket Island
March on Nantucket brings closure to the "Quiet Season." Long walks , workouts, art classes, films  and documentaries are great ways to pass time.  A dozen or more restaurants stay open and there's never a wait for a table. Trivia Night at the Rose & Crown offers wonderful entertainment on a cold winter's night! The Nantucket Atheneum has something for everyone, including poetry readings, documentaries, wellness lectures and several children's and teen programs.

North of Boston

Lights, camera, action! Life becomes art at the 6th annual Salem Film Festival. The festival celebrates and showcases documentary films from around the world and is on its way to becoming one of the premier documentary film fests in the US. Films include "Poetry of Resilience," "The Fade," and "The World's Most Fashionable Prison." So, get ready for your close-up March 7-14 at CinemaSalem, 1 E India Square Mall # 114 in Salem.

Plymouth County

As a prelude to the summer jazz series that takes place in the village of Onset in the Town of Wareham, plan to attend the Onset Blues Festival on Saturday, March 23rd! Featuring local Blues bands, this festival is a great way to kick off spring and get those blues juices flowing. Event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Onset VFW on Gibbs Ball Park Road.
