This is the debut edition of a newsletter from the School of Communication and Media (SCM) at Montclair State University with news from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends.
Time Magazine honoring David Sanders as a teaching star

TIME magazine included the SCM's Professor David Sanders on a list of "teaching stars" in the article, "The Hottest Seats in Class." TIME compiled the list by surveying students to find the most popular professors on campuses throughout the country. 


Sanders made the list for his work with students and with the Audio/Sound Design program at Montclair State, a program he designed and coordinates.

Graduate Program Community Event

The Public and Organizational Relations Program held its annual Community Meeting at the Yogi Berra Museum on September 18.  

 

It was a great opportunity for SCM graduate students to familiarize themselves with the graduate program and to network with successful alumni. This year's alumni panel discussants included Lauren Biondi, MSU 2012; Eileen Cruz, MSU 2010; Michael R. DiBartolomeo, MSU 2009; Chelsea Perino, MSU 2012; and Kristopher Weeks, MSU 2007.    

 

Student Media Projects

Students from the SCM produced some exciting projects!

 

WMSC 90.3 FM (campus radio station) did a live broadcast on October 12 of MSU's Homecoming Football game, the first in 10 years.

PRSSA students, led by Professor Larry Weiner, created transmedia projects for several prominent shows of the Metropolitan Opera, including Die Fledermaus, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Magic Flute, and Elixir of Love.

 

Jianna Hall produced a news story for WiredJersey.com on the Muslim Student Association's ice cream social event that brought the community together.

 

Kenny Spooner (recent graduate) and Mike Mee produced the heartbreaking story of how a year of rebuilding was wiped out in one day by a sudden fire at Seaside Park on September 12, 2013 for WiredJersey.com.   

 

Ryan Miller produced a news story for WiredJersey.com about 40 immigrants from 23 different countries who gathered at Montclair State and were sworn in as new United States citizens.

Roberta Friedman and Daniel Loewenthal presented their film, "Cosmopolis: 49 Waltzes for the World (2013)," at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in Manhattan. Learn More...   

 

Karl Nussbaum presented his video "Hilbert Space" at the 2013 Hamburg International Kurz Film Festival. His film "Night Blooming Flower" premiered at the Witteveen Visual Art Center in Amsterdam.  

 

Debbie Galant participated on a panel on "Collaboration ROI: Who Do You Trust?" at the Online News Association annual meeting in Atlanta. 

 

Merrill Brown, Director of the SCM, and Jeff Jarvis, Professor at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in New York, were interviewed about their participation in "Riptide," an oral history project that explores the intersection of technology and journalism. Listen to the podcast

 

Dr. Philip Bakelaar collaborated with graduate student Julie Lim to offer a GoToWebinar on "Communication During Downsizing." 

 

Dr. Joel Penney wrote a blog for "Media Res" on how social media campaigns are not just about the graphics but about the ways they help supporters express themselves. Learn More...  


Dr. Harry Haines is judging the prestigious Front Page Awards given by the Newswomen's Club of New York.

The SCM proudly hosted the 2nd Salon Series on "Crisis in American Criminal Justice System: The Cycle of Injustice: From Arrest and Incarceration to Re-entry" on October 9, 2013.

Featured panelists included: 
Dawn PorterDavid Fathi, and MSU's Jessica S. Henry. The event featured clips from the award-winning documentary "Gideon's Army" and was moderated by Merrill Brown.

Documentary filmmaker Ben Kalina will screen excerpts on October 24, 2013 from his film 'Shored Up' that examines coastal development and rising sea levels in the U.S. Kalina will discuss the process of making the documentary and the issues it raises.

Covering Misdeeds
