How Acupuncture Treatments Relieve Pain

Acupuncture is a holistic healing modality that has been used by the peoples of Asia for thousands of years. This healing system is based on the concept of Qi (CHEE), or life energy, which flows through the human body via a complex system of meridians or energy channels.  This flow of energy is vital for health. Disruption in the Qi flow is believed to cause disease and illness, which can cause bodily pain and discomfort.

Acupuncture is performed via insertion of very thin, stainless steel needles into acupuncture points located all around the body. Acupuncturists believe that specific placement of these needles helps to re-balance the Qi flow and bring the body back into balance. Once the needles have been inserted, they may be stimulated electrically or by hand to achieve the desired results. The acupuncturist may twirl the needles or gently manipulate them by hand. He/she may also apply heat to the needle or use mild electrical pulses to enhance the effect.

Medical researchers do not fully understand how acupuncture affects the human body in the way that it does. Some researchers believe that acupuncture causes the body to release chemicals that affect the central nervous system. These chemicals can cause the blood pressure to regulate and the blood to flow more evenly.

While there have been many different hypotheses as to how acupuncture achieves the results that it does, there is no concrete scientific evidence to support any of them. But, even without scientific evidence to support the use of acupuncture, it is still widely used as a technique to relieve pain and alleviate the signs and symptoms of many different diseases.

Acupuncture can be used as a stand-alone therapeutic technique or in conjunction with other healing modalities. Patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment or who are going through surgery often use acupuncture to help alleviate the side effects or quicken recovery associated with such procedures. Chemotherapy patients use acupuncture remedies to help alleviate the neuropathy or nausea and vomiting that often comes with their treatment.

Acupuncture is also used by patients who are recovering and rehabilitating from the often debilitating effects a stroke. Acupuncture has also been found to be helpful in management of the symptoms associated with drug, alcohol, and tobacco withdrawal. Acupuncture can also help manage the symptoms of asthma and allergies, be they seasonal or year-round.

Some of the more painful diseases that acupuncture can help with are:
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Severe menstrual cramps
  • Tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
Fibromyalgia is a disease that can cause wide-spread pain and many other varying symptoms. It can even cause the skin to feel overly sensitive to touch. Many fibromyalgia patients may suffer with headaches while others suffer with migraines. Migraines can cause symptoms such as massive head pain, sensitivity to light, and nausea and vomiting.

Many women suffering with menstrual cramps during their monthly cycle have found that acupuncture greatly reduces the severity of these cramps and can even help to regulate their emotions and take the edge off of other menstrual related issues.

Tennis elbow is a problem that causes the outside of the elbow and forearm to become very sore and tender. Carpal tunnel syndrome is when a nerve becomes entrapped in the wrist which can lead to pain and numbness in the hand. Acupuncture has been shown to help with both of these issues.

Another painful disease is osteoarthritis, which can cause many painful symptoms, including joint pain and swelling. It can also cause stiffness and locking of the joints. This is due to the degradation of the joints by the arthritis. Many patients use the Chinese healing modality of acupuncture to relieve the painful symptoms associated with this disease.
