Arlington, Montgomery counties top list of healthiest counties in the area

According to a new report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute, Arlington and Montgomery counties rank at the top of the annual healthiest counties in the region. Howard County ranked second in Maryland, and Albemarle and Fairfax followed second and third, respectively, in Virginia.

United Medical Center's new mobile clinic program is part of the District's strategy to reach its neediest patients. Each mobile clinic is estimated to serve 15,000 to 20,000 patients per year and boasts two exam rooms, equipment for drawing blood, running labs on site, telemedicine equipment, and an EKG. United Medical Center will offer mobile health clinic visits six days per week in Wards 7 and 8 with two new buses.

While Howard University alone reported a $13 million profit for the fiscal year, Howard University Hospital reported a $58 million loss, resulting in a total net loss of $44 million. The Hospital attributed the loss to declines in clinical services revenue, federal appropriations, and public contributions.

Beginning on March 23, 2015 through May 4, 2015, the disinfectant in drinking water will temporarily switch from chloramine to chlorine. The switch is part of the annual program to clean and maintain drinking water systems in the District, Arlington County, and the northeastern portion of Fairfax County. Additionally, during this time period, water authorities will conduct a system-wide flushing to improve water quality.

Can you bring your medical marijuana to work today? Although this is an increasingly hot issue facing employers, experts say there is no clear cut answer just yet. While limited recreational use is allowed in the District, marijuana is still illegal under federal law. Ultimately, employers remain free to conduct workplace testing, and for certain federal employment and contracting positions, testing is still required.

President Obama joined Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell to kick off the Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network. The Network will further accelerate the transformation of America's healthcare delivery system to one that provides better care, smarter spending, and healthier people, by supporting the adoption of alternative payment models.

America has the second highest obesity rate in the world, and the cost of treating obesity-related illnesses reaches more than $190 billion annually. According to two new studies, since the new school meals standards were introduced in 2012, American children are eating 16 percent more vegetables and 23 percent more fruits at lunch. Additionally, more than 90 percent of schools are meeting the updated guidelines developed by experts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 86 percent of HIV-infected individuals were diagnosed in 2011, but only 40 percent retained care and less than a third achieved viral suppression. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services launched new digital education tool, called Positive Spin, to combat this issue. Positive Spin uses personal storytelling to promote HIV outreach, encouraging those who suffer with the disease to seek treatment.

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program is
Accepting Applications Through March 30
National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is accepting applications for its competitive Loan Repayment Program through Monday, March 30, 2015 at 7:30pm. Primary medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health clinicians can get up to $50,000 to repay their health profession student loans in exchange for a two-year commitment to work at an approved NHSC site in a high-need, underserved area. Part-time opportunities are also available.
