Our 3rd Annual Physicians' Advocacy Conference was a success!
Last Friday, MSNJ hosted our 3rd Annual Physicians' Advocacy Conference. It would not have been possible without our Diamond Sponsor, Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Eastern Regional Medical Center, and all of our 2016 exhibitors! Thank you for all of your support!

The Honorable Stephen M. Sweeney, President of the New Jersey Senate, kicked off this year's Advocacy Conference with a Keynote Address.

Steven M. Goldman, Esq., Partner at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP, and past commissioner of the NJ Department of Banking & Insurance discussed how payers are cost profiling physicians, the risk of misclassification and what it means for practices.

Check out the photos from the event!

MSNJ President's Priorities for 2016-2017

Joseph P. Costabile, MD, was installed as MSNJ's 224th president on May 14. He is the first child of a past president to ascend to the position. He is a general and vascular surgeon and fellow of the American College of Surgeons. As a Captain in the U.S. Naval Reserves Medical Corps Dr. Costabile deployed to the Middle East twice in support of troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He continues to serve as Captain in the 4th Medical Battalion under the 4th Marine Logistics Group.

Dr. Costabile's priorities will be:

OMNIA Litigation Update
The Association of New Jersey Chiropractors has sought permission from the appellate division to file an amicus brief in the matter brought by Tier 2 hospitals against the New Jersey Department of Banking & Insurance (DOBI).  Both Horizon and DOBI objected to the request. The appellate division previously granted permission for MSNJ to file an amicus brief over the objections of Horizon and DOBI. The case is set for a hearing next week.
Physician Alert! Medicare's Proposed Payment Rule
The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) changes the way Medicare rewards clinicians for providing quality care by streamlining multiple quality programs into a new Quality Payment Program tied to Part B Fee-For-Service payments. With the implementation of MACRA and the replacement of the Sustainable Growth Rate, Medicare will pay clinicians participating in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System or Advanced Alternative Payment Models of the Quality Payment Program beginning in 2019. Read CMS's guidance for small practices.
President Obama in NJ
President Obama stated in his commencement speech at the Rutgers graduation last week: "You know, it's interesting that if we get sick, we actually want to make sure the doctors have gone to medical school, they know what they're talking about." Read the full text.
Drug Abuse
MSNJ was invited to a closed event at Jersey Shore University Medical Center this week to hear an update on the State's drug abuse reduction efforts. MSNJ continues to urge members to use the Prescription Monitoring Program, and other tools like patient agreements and urine screenings. See coverage of the event. See information on our website
Chronic Kidney Disease: Free Online CME Activity and Companion Patient Education
Phosphate binders are a primary means of controlling serum phosphorus, which is associated with a variety of CKD-related disorders, including systemic mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). The range of available phosphate binders has expanded significantly in recent years with the introduction of novel therapies that have added benefits in terms of efficacy and safety. Indeed, calcium-based phosphate binders and non-calcium-containing phosphate binders have important differential effects on vascular and bone health, as well as on the potential mortality of patients with CKD. It is important that clinicians who manage patients with CKD be aware of the appropriate use of these agents in order to optimize treatment outcomes.

Medicare Opt-Out Reminder
CMS recently updated its manual language to reflect changes in the Medicare opt-out procedures, due to MACRA.  Physicians who have opted-out are reminded that:
  • If your opt-out affidavit was signed BEFORE June 16, 2015: Your opt-out status will expire 2 years after the effective date. If you wish to remain opted-out, a renewal affidavit must be filed within 30 days of the expiration of the current opt-out period.
  • If your opt-out affidavit was signed AFTER June 16, 2015: Your opt-out status will automatically renew every two years. If you no longer wish to be opted-out, you will need to cancel the renewal at least 30 days prior to the start of the next opt-out period.
You may check your opt-out status for NJ in the Novitas Opt-Out listings. Read the MLN Matters article for more information.
HATA Survey on Electronic Eligibility
The Healthcare Administrative Technology Association invites you to participate in a short survey to provide critical information regarding the major pain points that still exist with electronic eligibility. Your feedback will be used to develop recommendations that will be presented to industry decision makers with one representative voice and a collective strength that will encourage outcomes allowing you to continue delivering the best patient care. Take the survey through Tuesday, May 31.  Thank you for your time and collaboration on this important initiative!
