Rutgers Healthcare and Real Estate Symposium: The Future of Healthcare Real Estate in New Jersey
Friday, April 15, 2016 from 7:00am to 12:00pm at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
The Healthcare and Real Estate Symposium is dedicated to discussing the real-life intersection between the changing environment for healthcare and how that affects decisions being made pertaining to real estate. A hypothetical case study has been developed in which panelists will interact with the moderators and audience to discuss some of the challenges facing the healthcare industry and real estate industry and how these problems can be solved.

Drug Abuse
This week, MSNJ participated in a roundtable on opioid abuse. We advocated for improvements to the Prescription Monitoring Program, including delegation and interoperability with other states. See press coverage.

Unfortunately, the information in this report is not news to MSNJ. We have been advocating to improve the practice environment for physicians on many fronts. We supported legislation to expand our medical student loan redemption program, but the bill was vetoed. We are fighting to reduce taxation, particularly on ambulatory facilities. We fight legislative mandates that increase cost and we are fighting to improve insurance contracts and payments. We hope policymakers take this report seriously and recognize physicians' contributions to society and to New Jersey's economy. Read more.
Mental Health & Substance Use Disorder Parity for Medicaid & CHIP 
CMS has finalized its rule on access to mental health and substance use services to provide parity for individuals in the Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance programs. The final rule ensures that individuals in these government programs have the same access to care as those in private health plans. The government program plans must disclose information on mental health and substance use disorder benefits and the criteria for determinations of medical necessity. Read the

The Physicians Foundation's Fourth National Survey
The Physicians Foundation is launching its fourth national Survey of America's Physicians, one of the largest physician surveys ever undertaken in the United States. The survey is being conducted by national physician search and consulting firm, Merritt Hawkins, and will be emailed to more than 650,000 physicians across the country from March-May of 2016. The survey will take approximately 10-12 minutes to complete and will allow physicians to share their thoughts on health reform, electronic medical records, new methods of physician reimbursement, ICD-10, and a variety of other topics. A full copy of the final survey report will be emailed to all physicians who participate, and participants will also be entered to win one of five $500 Amazon gift cards and one $5,000 Amazon gift card. Consider the Conversation
The producers of Consider the Conversation have released a new promotional piece for the educational use DVDs of Consider the Conversation: A Documentary on a Taboo Subject and Consider the Conversation 2: Stories about Cure, Relief, and Comfort.
De Groote Award Nominations
MSNJ is accepting nominations for the De Groote Award which will be conferred at the MSNJ Inaugural Gala of the 224th President, Joseph Costabile, MD on July 23, 2016. The De Groote Award was established by resolution to honor the selfless work of Dr. Robert De Groote in service to the medical profession. The De Groote Award will be given to the individual whose selfless and idealistic work benefits humankind and not him or herself.

Nominations should be made by submitting a
brief narrative to info@msnj.org by the close of business on Friday, April 15, 2016.
Lifetime Achievement Award
MSNJ is accepting nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented at the Inaugural Gala of the 224th President, Dr. Joseph Costabile, on July 23, 2016. Submit a short paragraph to info@msnj.org describing their commitment to the Medical Society.

OCR Launches Phase 2 of HIPAA Audit Program
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has begun its next phase of HIPAA audits of covered entities and their business associates. In its 2016 Phase 2 HIPAA Audit Program, OCR will review the policies and procedures adopted and employed by covered entities and their business associates to meet selected standards and implementation specifications of the Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules.
