Open Payments Review and Dispute Period ends May 20

Physicians and teaching hospitals have until May 20 to dispute payments attributed to them. Drug and medical device makers are required to report certain payments made to physicians and teaching hospitals on an annual basis. Participation in the program is voluntary, but encouraged so that physicians and teaching hospitals can review and, if necessary, dispute payments before the information is made public on June 30, 2015. To review the data, you must register in both the CMS Enterprise Portal and the Open Payments system. If you registered last year, you do not need to register again in both systems.

HIPAA Settlement: Unsecure Disposal of Paper Medical Records

Cornell Prescription Pharmacy (Cornell) has agreed to settle potential violations of the HIPAA Privacy Rule with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). OCR opened a compliance review and investigation after receiving notification on the disposal of unsecured documents containing the protected health information (PHI) of 1,610 patients in an unlocked, open container on Cornell's premises. The documents were not shredded and contained identifiable information regarding specific patients. Cornell was fined $125,000 and is required to adopt a corrective action plan to correct deficiencies in its HIPAA compliance program. Read the resolution agreement.
