New Economic Impact Study Released---NJ Physicians Support Jobs

On April 16, the AMA released a new report which shows the economic impact that physicians have nationally: Physicians helped give our economy a big boost by contributing 9,968,342 jobs; $1.6 trillion in sales revenue; $775.5 billion in wages and benefits; and, $65.2 billion in state and local tax revenues across the nation.

Read New Jersey's results and the Economic Impact of Physicians in New Jersey. "This study looks beyond patient care and the clinical aspects of physician practices and focuses on the enormous economic benefits offered by New Jersey physicians in boosting the state's economy," said Larry Downs, CEO of the Medical Society of New Jersey. "Physicians remain a significant source of job creation and drivers of local economies." New Jersey physicians support almost 250,000 jobs in the Garden State. On average each New Jersey physician supports 10.5 jobs.

The study found that physicians had a greater national economic impact than each of the following industries: higher education, home health care, legal services, nursing and residential care. It is noteworthy that according to the federal government spending on physician services grew more slowly between 2009 and 2012 than at any other time in the last fifteen years and accounts for only 16% of all healthcare dollars spent in 2012. Yet, every dollar applied to physician services supports an additional $1.62 in other business activity.
