DID YOU KNOW?
1. GRRSN started the Christmas Gift Wrap Fundraiser in the year 2003. That year the rescue earned $951. To date the Gift Wrap Fundraiser total is over $48,000. Please consider signing up this year. Your help can make a difference and it is fun too.
2. The GRRSN Petsitting Program began in the year 2011. To date, the Program has earned over $20,000 and has been a wonderful home away from home for goldens in need of a place to stay while their families are traveling. If the vacationing families think their dogs are not having a good time while they are gone, they are so wrong. A thank you to our Petsitting Coordinator and the Volunteers that open their home to support the Petsitting Program. Click here for more information on this program.

Kids Giving From the Heart
Every family knows that the bond between a family pet and a child is special. And for these children, their love of goldens goes on to include our treasured rescues.
Meet Adam Esrig who used his Bar Mitzvah project to support the rescue and raised $640 as well as collecting collars, leashes and much needed supplies.
Meet Campbell Wick who asked for her birthday gift to be donations to our rescue and told her friends and family.
Our thanks to both families for their support!

The Story of Belle
Perhaps the best way to understand the mission of GRRSN is to meet the dogs and hear their stories. Belle, less than 2 years old, will break your heart but her story also shows the soul of this rescue and the veterinarians that help us every day. And, most important, there is a happy ending. Meet beautiful Belle who is a playful puppy again

Article contributed by Dr. Michael Knehr, Sun City Animal Hospital.
Belle is a great example for many reasons. She's a poster child for the many wonderful achievements that have resulted from Golden Retriever Rescue. When I first met her, she weighed 39 pounds because she had been vomiting and not eating for a month. Belle was the true definition of emaciated, having lost almost half of her ideal body weight. The original owners could not provide her with the necessary care and turned her over to GRRSN for help. The top 2 potential problems were either an intestinal foreign body or juvenile onset of intestinal lymphoma. With Debbie Pietro's permission, we had the go-ahead for surgery to explore the abdomen. Her exact words were "If there is anything we can do to help this young girl, we want to do it!"
It turns out that Belle had eaten the top of a baby bottle and it was lodged in her small intestine. To make matters worse, the intestines had ruptured causing peritonitis, an infection in the abdominal cavity. After resecting 1/3rd of her small intestine and spending 2 weeks in our ICU with a drain in her abdomen, IV antibiotics and plasma transfusions, Belle was finally out of the woods. Not many pets are lucky enough to survive an infection this severe, especially with the toll it had already taken on her body. She has gained 20 pounds now and is well on her way to a full recovery. She has an amazing temperament and spirit!
The ingestion of foreign bodies is very common among young Goldens. As a retrieving breed, they are very orally fixated. How many of your own Goldens love to hold their own leash during a walk? They explore their environment with more than just their noses. Everything goes in the mouth and they swallow things they shouldn't. So puppy proof your house, take a daily toy count, don't let them play outside without supervision and consult with your veterinarian if you suspect they swallowed a foreign body. Also, consider pet insurance especially if your dog has a tendency to ingest things to decrease the financial liability resulting from an emergency.
Belle is looking for her forever home too. Please check our website.

Our summer Golden Alert comes from Elizabeth Parker, Author and golden lover as you can see from her story.
For the past 15 years, we have been blessed with golden retrievers running through our homes and through our hearts. Over the years, we've lost 2 of our male fur-children but we are lucky to still have two goldens named Duke and Brandi, along with a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever named Toffee, a smaller, more neurotic blend of the golden temperament. This golden alert comes from Toffee, the duck toller. She loves all animals - mice, rabbits, cats, dogs - but at the dog park, she wants no part in playing with them. In fact, she doesn't want them close to her and if they even gently step on her paw, she screams as if she has been attacked! So Toffee took me by surprise when we adopted our male golden, Duke. She not only let him step on her without screaming, but she also allows him to lay on her, rest his head on her back and she seeks him out to lay next to her, wherever that may be. Duke is a golden in every sense but he can be intolerant of strange dogs jumping on him. For Toffee however, he lets her kiss his face and gives her first dibs at the water dish and sometimes even shares his Frosty Paws with her, though only for a few seconds. There is absolutely nothing in this world as perfect as living with golden retievers. From their unconditional love, crazy antics and super intelligence, they are golden in every sense of the word.
